First, if you're looking for a post that will pass out trophies and kudos to everyone for good effort, stop reading right now.

First, on the game. What a pathetic effort. Unprepared and absolutely no fire. We got beat up on both lines of scrimmage. Our Oline played terrible. No holes to run through the entire game. Dline was only marginally better....at least they had a few sacks. Like many games, the outcome was decided on the LOS and we got flat out beat by the basement of the Big Ten. Terrible.

Moving on, our LB"s simply stunk to high heaven. We made the NW running back look like the second coming of Barry Sanders. Bowl high rushing performance and career high. How many times has our defense allowed opponents career highs this year? Sorry, but I am glad that Galambos, Bradley and Caprara are graduating. I'm sure they are great people. I'm sure they work hard. They are not playmakers. Idowu should never see the field again next year. My only consolation with the LB corp is that they simply have to be better next year because this group was terrible.

Our DB's actually were not as bad as normal (talk about damned by feint praise). Maddox made a few plays today. Lewis was not good but I've seen him play worse. Webb had to leave early so he didn't have many opportunities to take the wrong angle and whiff of tackles. Dennis Briggs is still somewhere on the field searching for his jock strap that he got faked out of on the TD run. Also, how many times did NW run that lame bubble screen and our DB's got crushed and could not get off blocks to make a play?

Moving to offense, there wasn't much to love with the exception of a few big plays by Henderson and Weah. Henderson really is fun to watch. That said, he has a serious ball security issue. Those fumbles kill us. Peterman played an OK game with the exception of the brain fart int. My god, what was he seeing? He threw a lollypop right over the middle at the goal line. Stupid. Our RB's did absolutely nothing the entire game. And of course, Blewitt pushed one to the right. Maybe Narduzzi should have kissed him before he missed.

One last comment on the game itself. No sour grapes here.... we were soundly beaten by NW, but those refs were freakin horrible. The 4th down ball spot for NW was comical. The guy never made the 34 yard line and the spot was over the 34. Then they reviewed it and it was CLEAR he didn't make the line... ruling confirmed. Then you had the BS holding call on Mitchell that gave NW a first and the non-call on the clear helmet to helmet hit on Peterman. What the hell were these refs watching?

Enough about that game. On to the season overall. I really have mixed emotions on this season. On one hand, it was OK. 8 regular season wins, competitive in almost every game, beat the #2 team on the road.... a lot of good stuff happened. But in typical Pitt fashion just when we have an opportunity to build a little momentum, finish with 9 wins, finish the season ranked, we shit the bed again. Very disappointing.

I still think Narduzzi is the right guy for the job, but he honestly needs to start showing some progress in a few key areas. First, for a defensive "genius" this was the worst defense I've seen since the 90's. You simply can't win games giving up so many points and so many yards. I thought the defense would improve at least slightly this year. We did not. We got way worse. Yes we are in need of more talent....who isn't besides Alabama, but good coaches find a way to get more out of their players then their talent level dictates. Offensively, we did just that. Defensively, we underperformed. Secondly, Narduzzi needs to pick up his recruiting game. Yes, I know that signing period is not over, but we're simply not going to win consistently with classes ranked 35-40.

Overall, an OK season with some highs and some needless lows. I just hate the thought of another off-season with the crappy taste of a bowl loss to a very average team.

Not much to disagree with; your post and mine were being typed simultaneously and share a lot of similar thoughts. Dittos to "no participation trophies". These kids are given a free, high-quality education; free room and board; first class training and playing facilities. As much as I sometimes bite my lip when I see our defense "trying" to play the style our coaches run, and wish that Narduzzi et al will adjust, you sometimes just have to put the ownness on the players. NU may have been 6-6 but their record this year appeared better. And they were certainly "better prepared", or so it seemed. And you're soberly correct; this is a bad taste to take into next year. No disrespect to NU. But with the weapons we have on offense - and with even a modicum of performance by the defense - Pitt wins this matchup. Not today.

Very disappointed in today. A sign of a good coach is what you do with extra prep time. We haven't been good in bowl games or off bye weeks.

I don't mind getting beat by a team with more talent but they simply wanted it more than us.

And another thing. Coach needs to stfu once and awhile. Quit the bitching and earn your money by making adjustments. His defense specifically the 3rd down defense was the worst I have ever seen.

Well said all the way around. Another momentum killer by a program that has it down to an art.

Just say it. Same old Pitt. Out of the top 25 (let alone "The Next Level") again. As you, I am very concerned about recruiting. Bringing in top 40 or even 30 classes is not going to cut it. Unless there is a step up to a division championship, Narduzzi falls by they wayside in 2 more years.
Like we have been since 2004.

It is not why they lost, but if I ever meet one of those refs I very well might end up facing felony charges. They were the most backwoods, dimwitted, slovenly dolts I have ever witnessed in a D1 football game, and it may have been sheer incompetence, but GD it was like they were Fitzgerald's inbred hillbilly cousins.

I am a big Nards guy, but yesterday was wholly unacceptable. I accepted that Navy was simply a better team last year, but this was his second bowl and his team once again came out disjointed. All of the specific issues aside, NW was a team they matched up well with and was not any more talented, but won simply because they played a cleaner game and executed better.

Also, I still think he is the guy, but after how epicly bad this defense was this year, he is at a point where one way or another, it has to be MUCH better next year or he is going to lose the fan base. Chicken or egg, scheme or talent, it HAS to be markedly better. He caught lightning with Canada this year, it is asking a LOT for the next OC to be that good next year to make up for a defense that literally is the worst in NCAA football in some categories.

Just a massive letdown - they had the matchup that gave the a middle of the plate 85 MPH to hit to get that 9th win/bowl win.

Do we have the upcoming talent to repeat this seasons accomomplishments. This is where we see what we got in coach Narduzzi. He will continue the progress but expectations may have to be tempered a bit with the seniors we are losing.

I don't really place much emphasis on bowl games influencing what a team does the next season. Pitt was going to have a lot of roster turnover/new offensive coordinator next season whether they won or lost this game. You always want to win but largely these types of bowl games are forgettable, can't really imagine a game like this influencing recruiting one way or the other.

Could be wrong though.

We have zero speed at linebacker, especially at MLB. In the case of galambos he has a nose for the football and played with a lot of heart, but you're kidding yourself if you expect the lb core to keep up with a team that's main threat is their running game. The dl can only do so much, these lbs get exposed terribly against good running teams. We had such an obvious lack of talent there. Can't knock the kids for going out there and giving it their best shot, this lands on Chryst for completely ignoring that in recruiting. If Pugh is being moved to dl I'm a little confused, we need linebackers more than we've needed any position in quite some time.

Canada was clearly checked out in the prep for this game. We ran our plays but the offense clearly did not make nuances and match plays up against NW formations, situations. We had multiple wheel route combos in every game this year----today we had one (to Ollison).
