Georgia Tech Game & Other Dribbles ...

As decent of a crowd as they had for GT, in terms of attendance this year being as pathetic as it has been, I doubt that tonight's game will see more than 1,500 attending, including the Zoo. The Duke game will see more fans because there will be half Duke fans there, maybe more.
A Tuesday nighter at 8pm after last game isn't going to get a good crowd. What last game shows (and even the one prior) is that people still care about Pitt basketball. Hire a good coach and they will come back. I'm certainly happy they've shown some life recently, but it doesn't change my thoughts on Capel needing to go. They're in no man's land.

I agree. People still care about Pitt Basketball and we will draw when we get close to the bubble. 8-10k is the ceiling though.

Basketball is really just 3 point shooting now. Horton is shooting an absurd 46% from 3 this year which would make him one of the best in the nation if he had enough attempts. That is an incredible asset for a team. To be able to make 3s at that clip negates any defensive disadvantage. You should be able to have a player like that guard the weakest perimeter for the other team and hold that player to a respectable total. It isnt like the weakest perimeter player is going to go for 20 every night because Horton is guarding them.
Or play more zone more often.

I basically said that exact same thing above. Yeah, that is why you can't sit him. But when his two other backcourt mates are going to combine for 2 points........and Horton is off too? No chance to win.
Well sure. But Horton is potentially an elite shooter. A major weapon. Its up to the coach to game plan around whatever he lacks on defense. And I've always thought defense was overrated unless you're an elite defensive like UVa. Its 3 point shooting, rebounding, and turnovers.

Defense is never overrated.

UVA's defensive effort overall is consistent from year to year because they are well coached. They aren't anything special defensively this year simply because they aren't as athletic as they have been in recent years.

Yes it is. And studies prove that. Good offense beats good defense. UVa won a NC when they had NBA offensive talent

Totally agree, my friend. With the least bit of hope and knowledge that we have a good coach and the prospects of a pretty good team, the crowds will be back eventually. It may take more than a season for this program to prove they're committed to being better, but it will happen once we get a better coach and some higher level recruits.

Unfortunately, it's not happening as long as we have Capel here.

So then it's more than just being well coached! It ain't the xs and the os, it's the Johnny and the Joe's.

If you actually watched the game on Saturday then you saw a guy who scored 11 points and made 3 three pointers who was a large net negative for the game because he couldn't defend a traffic cone.

You understand that even if he starts guarding the other team's worst perimeter player that he isn't going to end up guarding him all game pretty much no matter what you do. Imagine how bad you'd be playing a defense where your guards aren't switching off of screens because one of them was so bad that you couldn't even think about putting him on one of the other guys.

Or the coach develops his players, and can teach the Xs and Os. Howland & Dixon were pretty good at both finding players who bought into the system. At this point, Capel seems lacking on both skills.

It’s a lot easier to coach better players ! Makes you look a lot smarter too .

As long as they're not talented with a bad attitude.
Having talented players who are coachable !

One must get their program to the level were they can pick their players as opposed to the players picking you . Pitt and JC are not there .

It is Year 4. There are no excuses at this point.

A big part of recruiting is finding out who is coachable. That requires time and effort on the part of the coaching staff. Talking to their coaches and getting to know the player and his family. Pitt needs to recruit good basketball players that have a great work ethic and team first attitude. Pitt isn’t going to land a bunch of 4-5 star recruits and simply out talent the opposition in the ACC.

Your singing to the choir , this staff hasn’t figured out whom they can and cannot sign . Once they lose their priority targets it leaves them scrambling to fill a roster . Beggars can’t be choosy.
