Gilbert Brown Joins Pitt Basketball Staff as Director of Player and Alumni Development

PITTSBURGH – Former Pitt standout Gilbert Brown has been named Director of Player and Alumni Development as announced Monday by head coach Jeff Capel. Brown joins the staff after spending the previous season as an associate head coach at South Kent Prep.

“Gil is an outstanding Pitt man with a great deal of passion for the game of basketball and the University of Pittsburgh,” said Capel. “We connected immediately over basketball when I first started here at Pitt and he was rehabbing an injury and extending his playing career. I look forward to watching Gil continue to build great relationships with past, present, and future Pitt Basketball players and their families.”

Brown concluded his playing career at Pitt with 1,048 points, 438 rebounds, 234 assists and 67 steals over 129 games (49 starts). He was a part of five NCAA Tournament teams, including the Panthers’ 2009 Elite Eight appearance. As a senior, Brown averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while starting all 34 games. The Harrisburg, Pa., native helped the Panthers to a 111-30 record and a pair of Big East Championships.

Brown’s professional career spanned 10 years and included stops in Germany, the NBA D-League, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Turkey, Italy and Israel. He was a NBA D-League All-Defensive Team (3rd) selection in 2014 and earned Israeli League All-Star accolades in 2016.

Brown replaces fellow Panther standout Ronald Ramon, who accepted an assistant coach position at Fordham University in May.
