No recruits; a team with no visual leader; a good guy coach who seems lost on the sidelines; a fan base struggling to make heads or tails out of our team and program; maybe a glimmer of encouragement/hope from Odekale and Sibande.

Champ had his worst night when mediocre would’ve been good enough. Ditto the free throw shooting.

Not sure how else to sum this up. It’s almost an inevitable now to just accept a loss and a poor TEAM effort by this grouo Wish I could be more optimistic; but anything said positively now would be like putting lipstick on a pig ...

See y’all next BB season, God willing and the creek don’t rise ...

Odukale looks like our best leader candidate in some time.

Capel has to reel in some top level, elite 4* and 5* guys immediately to salvage this program for the next couple of years. I don't see any indication he'll be doing that. He is poor with player development and coaching and taking a bunch of 3* guys won't help at all. He is basically recruiting a few transfers who won't matter and maybe some JC guys who also won't matter, except to take up a roster spot.

I really don't expect much from this team next year except to take another step backwards. I don't like being this negative, but how can anyone who is a Pitt fan for any length of time not help being negative? The future looks worse than the present. Very discouraging.

People (well people on here and at Pitt) have to realize.....Duke doesn't need to cheat, Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, UNC, etc....I mean they do, but they don't really need to cheat that much, but they are bidding on pro's. Kids who are going to get paid.

It is funny to think Pitt can turn it around without playing in the margins. I am sorry, if those schools, if so many schools, much more successful and longer history than we do have to do this, why on earth do the good folks at Pitt think they don't? What, are they afraid of Gene Collier writing a smarmy column? Ron Cook? The old school local media are dying off and hate basketball anyways.

I think this program and the folks that run it and fund it need to take a long hard look around.

Jason Wiliford is easily the best assistant in the ACC for me and honestly I don't know who is worse than Jason Capel
Just about to answer Williford is clearly the best overall assistant in ACC. Stan Jones is up there as well. Christian Webster and Frazier from VT. Chris Caputo from Miami is well regarded.

Brad Frederick And Hubie Davis are basically useless at UNC but they still land kids because of the logo. Jason capel is by far the worst and most overpaid assistant in ACC history. His resume speaks for itself. Who has he even recruited since here? Hugley? He is all but gone. Every reference to Pitt is off his social media.

Brandin Knight was a career 50% ft shooter at Pitt
Think it was a problem?
BK had a team around him. And maybe a couple of games, yes, his poor FT shooting hurt. Clearly the comparison of BK to FO is too early to capture. I certainly think Feme has a huge upside. I hope he finds it. At Pitt.

The point was -
Focus on ft% is honestly silly
He scored 28 today
Are we really worried about his 4 missed free throws ?

Very fair assessment Moe. It is hard to find any real positives heading into next season. I think we lose Penny too. I don't think it will be to the NBA though. I don't expect him to be drafted, but would be surprised if he didn't go overseas to make some cash. In the event he did do one more year of college, I don't think it will be for the University of Pittsburgh.

If Capel has any recruiting magic in him, he better exercise it quickly. Without an infusion of new talent, we are headed for the bottom again. Its damn disappointing again looking at a rebuild, although not a total rebuild, heading into year 4. Will we ever get a big who can play at this level?

I give you tons of credit for posting. A lot of the old timer, board regular have disappeared during these difficult times. Hard to respect them, but much respect to you!

We looked undersized out there today and not just at the center/power forward position. And that’s with a 6’5” PG ...

Souf, I hear what you’re saying, but think about it: a point guard is going to get more touches, more drives, more late game opportunities (in close games) at the FT line. For as long as I’ve been a Pitt BB fan (51 yrs) I don’t recall our team ever being a top FT shooting group. Not when it mattered ...

Thanks. I rarely post anymore but I watch all the games I can. I chose YouTubeTV to get the ACCN. I may switch or stop my service until fall/football. I’m pretty sure I can save a few bucks until then ...

And I’ll point out a point guard in the rafters who was an all American made 50% of his free throws

your first paragraph sums it up and that isnt going to happen, so here we are

Worst non-Pitt assistant ?
How are you judging ?
I don't know how anyone judges with the exception of job offers right? I mean if a guy is truly great as an assistant then other programs will be coming after them. And if no assistants are being courted by other schools, then you have to wonder. For a fan, I don't see how there is any other way to evaluate assistants aside from W's and L's.

Correct
And I’m all for a staff shakeup here
But it’s always a fools errand to target ire at a particular assistant

hell for years people though Antigua was a worthless hump -
Now same people think he’s a pied piper .
It’s a fickle fanbase

I stay away from the assistant debates quite simply because I don’t know. And unless one is on the inside, they don’t know either. But the body of work stinks.

Despite my comment about not getting involved with assistant discussions I will say this is why you don’t allow nepotism. If Jason sucks, will Jeff fire him? It has to be sooo much harder to pink slip your own blood than someone else. And even if Jason is ok, perceptions may vary. I just think hiring family is a big no no.

Your point on Antigua is funny. Never occurred to me before but you’re correct.

Really how do you know this ? What are his responsibilities? How is he failing to do his job ? Because bbinsider says so ?

Pitts biggest problem has been recruiting quality bb players , guess how many top 100 guys three different head coaches have been able to bring to Pitt since 2012 ? (247 ref )
Answer is three : Micheal Young , Trey and Big John . ( Trey and Big John were barely in the top 100 ) Kind of ironic that JC has brought in two of those three ! Unfortunately Trey just never improved and wasn’t a team player and Big John’s brain fart has really hurt the program .

Talent , repeat it 100 times and you’ll understand the biggest issue that’s that’s facing both the Fb and bb programs . It‘s obviously very difficult to get top talent to Pitt in both the areas of coaching and players . Pitts unable to attract the coaches who can attract the top players and they won’t turn their heads to creative recruiting . They’re in a pickle .

Jason may stink - I’m not sure -
It seems he’s involved with coaching the guards based on in game player conversations-
Frankly if that’s true - our guards have been solid and have improved

the most vocal and active coach seems to be O’Toole

...a good guy coach who seems lost on the sidelines ; a fan base struggling to make heads or tails out of our team and program; maybe a glimmer of encouragement/ho
"Good guy"? I doubt X, Toney and McGowens feel that way. There was something going on there, and I don't automatically take the coaches side without knowing the whole story.

The way I always look at it is that the buck stops with the head guy. At some level I don't really care if some assistant is great or mediocre or crappy. Because my job doesn't depend on it. But if my job did depend on it I would care, a whole lot. If a head coach hires bad assistants then he's not going to be the head coach for much longer. If he(meaning any head coach, not just Jeff Capel) is happy with his staff then so be it. He's the one that is ultimately responsible and will ultimately pay the price if he's wrong.

At the end of the day, win games.

At the end of the day you either win or lose games mostly do to the talent on your team . If your constantly losing recruits is it the fault of the assistant coaches , the head coach , the faculties, better offers , the academics , team makeup , the bonding of recruits with current players , past relationships with players coaches , location of school , girlfriends, parents etc ? It’s not that simple to just blame all the issues with this program on his assistants . Bottom line Pitt needs a new strategy on who and how they recruit , this isn’t just a JC and staff problem it’s been a problem since 2012 .
