An annual rite of summer...
When do the Steelers head to camp??

Amazon not the only ones who will have a big summer sale. Bucco fans (?) look forward to the trade deadline like Yankee, Red Sox, and Dodger fans look forward to the world series.

Marte, Vasquez, Dickerson, Cabrera packing their bags as we speak.
Nutting in ecstasy seeing a lot of $$$ leaving town. If Cervelli wasn't crippled, he'd be going too. Maybe Archer shows enough to entice an offer as well??

Unfortunately, no one wants Kerplunko. He's back at the Dr. with more shoulder pain.

Enough talent there to get at least 3 top prospects and a few middle prospects. Let's see what kind of GM Huntington is.
Back to the drawing board.

That's just it FP. Real Deal Neal needs to get the eff off of the fence or leave town. It is time for bold moves. I know it is going to piss off fans, it may make the 2nd half this year moot (as it already isn't) and next year may lose 100, but the fans are pissed off already so why not?

I agree. Marte and Vasquez in deals should yield some really good (top) prospects. Others could yield pieces. But worries me, is not just Huntington's ability to make these moves, but if he has the will to do it. His job has to eventually be on the line, so I am not sure how much down the road he can look. I am afraid they will try and go after Cole like return (guys closer to the majors rather than maybe more talents who are further away) to again push this thing along.

The shame is....finally, after all of these years, you got that big bopper in the middle of the lineup now. But let's be real, he will only be here for 2 more years. So......

The ballsy thing, the baseball thing to do, is fire Huntington because he can't take a long view of this franchise, hire a new GM, make these deals, deal Bell after next year, have a true rebuild and hope you can emerge Astros style.

They were actually competitive far longer than anyone should have expected. And the division seems meh so maybe not done even yet. Chicago should fire Madden if he can't automatically win that thing annually.

You forget, Huntington is Nutting's boy. The perfect lackey, much like the stooge Coonelly.

He enjoys operating with the Nutting handcuffs on. Probably a closet masochist, "Thank you sir, may I have another"!

That pitching staff is such a wreck, I don't know if they have enough in the pipeline, or could get enough pieces to truly contend soon.
Taillon is a huge question mark for the future. Archer has been meh. Musgrove and Williams are at best #4 and #5 rotation guys on a good staff, the rest are chopped liver.
Keller may blossom but you HAVE to get a potential #1 starter in one of these deals to even have a chance.

Some good young pieces to build around with Reynolds, Frazier, Newman, Diaz and Hayes appears to be ready.
The timing with Bell's contract is unfortunate as I agree he won't be here past 2022. There is a good prospect behind him though.

This is the time. However it is the Pirates and I'm sure they'll screw this up.

Chicago is already dealing to strengthen their team. The Brewers OWN the Pirates and the Reds said they will be buyers.

To get to 88 wins, which seems about right to make any level of the playoffs, the Pirates have to play like .650 baseball the rest of the way. With this pitching staff ??????? No effing way!!!

trade cole and Vazquez, no one wants Polanco's salary so he's out. I'd love to get rid of him and move Bell back to right field for the last few years we have him but you cant sell something that no one wants to buy.

I think you hold onto marte, we still need an outfield in 2020.

Trade Cole? Again??
Could sign Dickerson for OF. Dickerson, Reynolds, Polanco (hopefully healthy) would work.

Tucker. Our shortstop who is behind Newman and stuck in AAA. Young shortstop with high ceiling could get you something on the market.

We got our SS of the future. We don’t need two. Dickerson is getting 9 million, will want more next contract. A lot of money for a guy in his 30s who can count his HR total on one hand....twice.

I’ll refrain from his bad news bears like defensive skills that were on full display last night or his athletic prowess on a face first slide the day before. Dude is a walking bloopers video.

Well I mean I would have shipped Ray Searage out long ago, but as far as pitching goes, their philosophy stinks and is stupid.

No. You have to hold onto Polanco, you have Reynolds, you can find a 3rd guy (Frazier). Remember, they aren't going to be contenders for a couple of years if you burn it down.

Marte's value will never be higher than it is right now.

Dickerson won a gold glove last year.
He may want more, but people in hell want ice water too. Make him a reasonable offer, he may take it.
Same with Kela. Trading Vasquez opens up closer role. Give Kela a modest offer to be closer for a few years. He closed before at Texas.

I'd keep Tucker for now to be sure Newman/Frazier are real deal. Also could move Frazier to OF if need be and play Tucker at SS, and Newman at 2B.

Marte's value will never be higher. Playing well with two years of reasonable control. He's just a year removed from a drug suspension. Move him now for a top prospect....Philly looks like the place.

When you don't have depth, it's so hard to remain competitive down the stretch. This pitching staff with several injuries went down the tubes in a hurry but the worst thing is that Nutsack will not spend anymore to sure up the staff. They will only do well if they have an injury free season as ownership will not spend any money to sure up the team if they do.

Man I love this post. I hadn’t thought about Kela in the closer role. I like the idea.

And I’d hate to trade Marte but he can bring return. We aren’t winning this year, and we aren’t winning next year without better starting pitching. Speaking of pitching, is it time to move on from Uncle Ray?

Trading away Cole Tucker makes zero sense unless they are bringing back a player that can help them contend this year. After struggling at the plate in his stint, he isn't bringing back anything close to his potential worth. I'd rather wait to see him develop and worst case, they are forced to move him or Newman to 2B and use Frazier in the OF. Remember Newman struggled to hit .200 last August. What do you think they would have gotten for him then, versus if they traded him now?

The Pirates are a rebuilt team. To take it to the Astros level they will have to spend big bucks. The Astros don't win without Justin Verlander and about a half dozen other free agent signings.

Pirates can’t win with Moran, Frazier, and Bell in the infield. All are well below average fielders. Can get away with one of them.

Crappy pitching and lousy fielding is a deadly combination.

The future infield may be Hayes, Tucker and Newman - that would be a big upgrade defensively.

Trade the players that are leaving after this year for a bucket of balls. Keep Marte and Vasquez. They have reasonable contracts. Spend some money in free agency on pitchers for next year.

Which is exactly why their "pitch to contact" mantra is insane. If they had Ozzie Smith, Brook Robinson, Maz and Keith Hernandez, maybe this makes sense. But they have the polar opposite.

Yeah, that's what they'll do!

Did you just emerge from a time capsule or come out of a coma??

Nothing more over rated than a good defensive first basemen. Nothing.

Agree with Frazier. Tucker can’t hit off a tee, keep him in the minors so we don’t hsve to watch that abomination at the plate.

Tucker is 23 years old and has been about a .275 hitter in his minor league career. It's his glove that flashes potential.
He had a brief stint in Pittsburgh, started off strong and faded, but remember he came up from AA to the Majors. Big jump.

You need to refine your definition of "abomination". Calling gold glove Dickerson's fielding an abomination and now this, as well as your opinion on the importance of First base defense is, well, an abomination.
