The answer is that he’s probably already going to be in town for some public event or ribbon cutting or something, and he’s said before that he’s a Pitt basketball fan (a decently knowledgeable one, too - you can tell he actually knows a little bit about Pitt hoops’ history) and his daughter graduated from Pitt. Plus, he’s got a prior relationship with Curtis Aiken so it makes some sense.
The actual answer probably also has to do with the fact that he’s running for governor in less than two years, and is almost certainly running for president in 2028, so this is likely part of the whole “anywhere, everywhere, all at once” media strategy that the Dems are trying to push given the failures of last year’s election.
It’s both.
Let him do play-by-play. Maybe we will be able to actually follow the action on radio for once 😂

Because he's the governor of Pennsylvania and there are a lot of Pitt fans who are voters.

I don’t really care, but I’m happy someone from Harrisburg realizes there are people west of State College.
Shapiro comes across as a regular dude, whether that's an act or not, who knows. But he has that "it" factor. Had no idea he was a bball fan or Pitt fan, which I still doubt he is but whatever, I'll take it.

Did he call the whole game? It looked like he was doing the 1st Half but towards the end of the game, I looked over and thought it was Jeff Hathorn. Couldn't really tell. We are now 2-0 all-time vs Syracuse during a major political event.
Only the first half. In the second half he was sitting in the corner behind the Pitt bench. Saw lots of people get pics with him during timeouts.
I went to the bathroom in the first half during a TO, which means I could hear the radio broadcast. He was calling for Zach to get more active in the paint on offense. That was a head scratcher.
And he joked about how Guillermo should be playing down low and would have been benched for taking 3s back when Joshy boy played ball.
