Guess we lost Fowlkes

Money always mattered, but it's magnified a lot more than coach in this environment.

Down to #48 in recruiting rankings, and looking at some of the schools behind us (Florida State, for instance), I'm sure we'll be falling even further once they add some guys.

Really getting tough to care about Pitt football, man.
We need to put our resources towards bringing in transfers that can immediately help the team. It sucks losing a good HS recruit, but there’s only so much NIL $ to go around.

There's a limit on how good of a transfer we can land, though. If we're going to acquire any star power, it's going to come from high school 90% of the time.

Take Kyle Louis for instance. If he went any place else and had this kind of season, Pitt would have absolutely no chance in landing him for 2025. But since we recruited him, there's a good chance he stays.

Both avenues of talent acquisition are important, and high school recruiting shouldn't be dismissed.

That, and any depth we have will need to be built from HS recruits. We're not gonna pay for quality depth from the portal, but we can get lucky with a HS recruit.

I said this last year, but incoming classes need to get big and stay big. You need to process these recruits after a year or two. Good ones backup then play, and the others into the portal. Might have to weed through 10 guys to find 3 or 4 contributors since we aren't gonna land the big fish.

How many years did it take for Louis to make an impact? We need guys that can step in next year and help right away. This roster has a ton of holes.

Ideally you have a good combination of Freshmen and Transfers, but if forced to make a choice then I’d put the NIL $ towards guys who play next year.

He's only a redshirt sophomore.

I agree that we also need instant-impact transfers, but we need both.

And if we, hypothetically, built a roster with only high school freshmen or only transfers our ceiling would be much lower in the latter scenario. They may contribute sooner, but they have already been evaluated and discarded by the bigger schools in favor of other talent. Obviously guys can also "transfer up," but we're not going to get the premiere talent that way, either. Or they're often going to come with some deficiency which is why they went FCS/G5 in the first place.

Also, it's an a-hole move to stay committed to a school for 5-6 months and then pull this right before the signing period begins. May this dude be catching passes from Kenny Minchey at a junior college someday while Dotson is playing defense on him.

Sad dose of reality...Narduzzi is not going to be capable of filling all of the holes. At least not with the quality of player that we all are hoping for. Pitt will likely be utilizing recruited players in many of these holes, thus the importance of high school recruiting. But, this becomes quite challenging when year after year you hang your hat on the "diamond in the rough" philosophy when it comes to recruiting.

Kyle Louis would be an absolute fool if he didn't enter the portal. Same for Dez Reid.

Reid needs to enter the draft. RBs have a limited shelf life and hes shown he can be really productive at the major college level. Playing another year just risks injury and reduces his shelf life at the next level. Hed make a great third down back/change of pace back in the NFL. His stock isnt going to get any higher than it is now. Unless of course some school is willing to shell out way more than he can make with his first contract in the NFL. In todays CFB, nothing is too crazy

Do you even need to enter the portal? Seems like once most big names enter the portal it's just a formality as the deal is already done.

Good point.

I think he would need to enter to find out the max Pitt would be willing to spend for his return. Other than that, you're probably right.

If these two and other top players enter the Portal, I can see Duzz calling it quit, saying enough is enough.
It's possible, but I doubt it. I don't think taking a knife to a gun fight really bothers him.

I heard Kevin Scarbinsky say last week that Nick Saban told him his breaking point was when they returned home after the Rose Bowl loss to Michigan, he had a conga line of players telling him how much it was going to cost to keep them around. When Caleb Downs left, he was over it.

I don't even pay attention to recruiting anymore. Haven't for past few years. I used to know the entire roster by heart come early fall ball every year. Now I don't even start looking over the full roster till week before first game due to transfer and how kids can sign and not show up these days. Just not worth it.

Never ends
I actually like that it's more transparent now. We used to lose players -- allegedly -- to locker room renovations, attendance, or better bowl opportunities. It makes more sense when decisions are purely transactional and above-the-table. And we don't have to castigate assistant coaches for not sending enough hand-signed letters.

Always a good reminder that NIL just legalized what has always been the standard practice for some schools. The transfer portal just makes it worse.

Was it Chryst who got lambasted for sending things on the old letterhead? Lol

I think once a Kyle Lewis gets a hint he can make WAY MORE money at Texas or Colorado or Florida or Bama he’ll be gone

Missouri must be dropping huge bags for HS kids.

The 5 star DE who visited here recently had a list of UT, A&M, SYR and PITT. Then takes late visit to Mizzou and commits there yesterday.

Someone gave them $62M in early 2024.

$50M was for renovations and whatnot, but $12M was for NIL. Have to imagine that helped quite a bit.

LOL!!!!

No one knows how good a recruit will be coming out of HS.

Look up how many Rival 5/4 star recruits never were taken by the NFL.

Yet Pitt had 17 recruits drafted by the NFL (7 Rounds) in the last 4 years.

Relax!!!!

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Then he'd see that his biweekly direct deposit of $260k just hit his bank account, and he'd say to himself, self, what kind of a moron would walk away from a $7 mill/year income at age 58 for coaching a kid's game for an institutional employer that doesn't put any pressure on me to excel?

I mean, I've never thought Dooz is a smart man, but some of you guys seem to think he's borderline mentally disabled.

TD has posted before he is quite happy with these 7-5 seasons.
It's either that or be unhappy with them. Because Pitt can't really do much better than that in this environment.

BTW, I didn't say I hoped he entered the portal. Hell no. I just said he would be a fool not to. That's the absurdity of the system.

In fact, I hope we have a massive number of players from playoff teams attempt to renegotiate their NIL deals before taking the field in the playoffs. Let those that benefit most from this absurdity feel a little pain.
