There’s enough already to make a case to can him. The only reason to keep him is financial. No need to keep reaching for things.

While HS recruiting has been a failure, it has to be said that the game has changed dramatically in the last few years making HS recruiting MUCH less important. If you dont get a Top 100 kid, its almost senseless to sign these reaches and develop them so they can transfer.

The whole point of the portal is to supplement high school players. Figure out the deficiency in a team, fill it, then see if you can take a flyer on a kid.
We have NO recruits, and by all accounts, won't sign anyone else this year.

Schools like Pitt cannot rely on freshmen any longer. Have to live in the portal. Syracuse, UVa, the SEC, yes, they can get freshmen. For Pitt, its gotta be the portal
huh? What true difference maker have we gotten from the portal? X/Trey/Champ/Hugley are all HS guys.
It's gonna take a new coach and a new competent staff and an impression amongst the few top kids in the portal that Pitt is a nice place to play. That is definitely not happening for us in the immediate future. So we need some good high school kids because we certainly haven't and won't be getting them from the portal.

I've been saying this on the paid board. Everyone is so upset we don't have a HS recruit for 2022. If I was on the perceived hot seat, I wouldn't put my eggs in the 150th ranked kids basket either. I'd try and hit on another Burton or Mo. Capel has done fine in the transfer market and these guys can help right away.
it just blows my mind that so many people can't see that this team has the bones of a good team, they're just very young right now. Young as in not a lot of experience together as well as not a lot of experience at Pitt/college bball.
Devils advocate. Don’t you think you want to have a couple kids signed (let’s say around #150) to show there’s actual hope for the future? Portal is no guarantee of future success.
Sounds funny but that was basically a different era. You cant get Top 100s anymore due to the SEC and there's literally 1000 guys in the transfer portal
And its what I've been saying here. If you're a new coach, sure, you can sign kids outside of the Top 150 and hope they develop and don't transfer but Capel has 1 year left. It just makes 0 sense for him to waste a roster spot on a kid who isnt going to play. He needs to hit it big on the transfer market. And the fact he has no signed players actually helps him in that regard. He can tell these transfers, he likely has 1-2 years left to make the NCAAT and he is trying to assemble an NCAAT team NOW.
You're correct, it has the bones. You see glimpses of what this team can be. Add some transfers, guys get better/older, and this could be a top half ACC team. But everyone wants to go 3-17 with a MM coach next year.

As I already stated, this isn’t a young team. But you rephrased this as young playing together. Gonzaga has 6 new pieces this year. Baylor always pieces kids together? Arkansas? Wake forest! How are all these other schools able to piece “young” teams together to win but we can’t?
And Mo and Burton are solid off the bench guys for winning teams. Everyone wants to scream at me that I was “wrong” on Burton and he’s been solid. If you gave most solid guards as many shots as he gets, they will produce double digit points. He’s been good, don’t get me wrong, but those type of players as your starters getting 30 mins a game get you to 5-15 in a bad ACC.

Explain to me other than Scott Drew being a terrific basketball coach what Baylor has over us that we can’t find a coach like him to do that here? It’s the 5th-6th best job in its own state
So the moral of the story is: we can’t compete with the SEC for top 100-150 players (despite there being several it seemed like would commit if we pushed harder in this class) and we can’t compete with Wake Forest’s of the world for the good transfers so we need to find kids who just love each other and band together like they’re the mighty ducks playing the nasty coach Reilly and the Hawks
I was being sarcastic. A school like Pitt has a very slim chance of landing a Top 100 in today's environment. Though how about Vandy/ND/BC landing 8 of the Top 102?
Also, I noticed Fordham landed the #110 recruit. A PG from NJ. What do you think about Kyle Neptune? That's a guy I' d keep my eye on. If he can make the NIT in 22-23, he'd be near the top of my list. Even in the ACC, I think we can still recruit that Philly/NJ/NYC corridor well.
scott drew started 12-52 at Baylor in conference play. good thing they didn't give up on him.
He had unprecedented sanctions after the previous coach covering up a murder. A little bit more traumatic than taking over for Kevin Stallings and instantly getting an extension for 3 wins in the ACC!
