It’s year 4 in the worst ACC in recorded history and Pitt is gonna finish something like 5-15
lol no expectations? blank out the names on this board and you'd think we're a top end hoops program with what people expect.
we've had limited success with transfers, zero success with high school recruits. yeah i know, im using "success" here subjectively..
but point remains, our only hope of fielding any kind of competitive roster is getting transfers like we did last year. guys like santos and jeffress are years away from even belonging on a D1 basketball court. the last thing we need is one or two more of these types that may contribute in year 3 of the program..
I really don’t care to discuss this any further. They’re likely keeping Capel for another year. It’s whether or not they fire him this or next. He has no shot of staying longer than next year though. The program is on life support.
The narrative that this is a “young” roster w “lots of potential” simply isn’t true. There’s probably one guy (Hugley) that would start on a Top 25 team and a bunch of old dudes who are nice rotational pieces on a good team. Santos and Jeffress are the only real “young” kids outside of Big John and those two wouldn’t play at Baylor, Gonzaga or Auburn. Time to move on and get a hungry young coach w some AAU or area ties to add some much needed athleticism and shooting to this roster of misfit toys.
He also had 3 4 stars in his 4th class on his way to winning 21 games his 4th year.
they have 3 players under scholarship who have 0 or 1 year left. The rest all have 2 years remaining (after this year). This isn't an old team.
there are plenty of other comparisons. None are perfect. the point remains true. some coaches need more time than others. the state of the program you take over also needs to be considered.
Dude, I am sorry it is starting to get boring you going out of your way to defend Capel. It just hasn't worked. Sorry. That's it. No matter what excuse, it is just not working. He can no longer recruit players. He can try for lottery tickets in the portal. But no one is joining this ship, his vision because it has a gaping hole in it and the ship is sinking fast. It is what it is. At the end of the day, it will be the end of year 4. And no progress.
I have said this many of times. There is no emotion in my posts. I am not mad. I am not happy to have to do and say this. But....
It is year 4 and we are worse off than year 1 and year 5 looks no different than year 4. Because of this, there is no reason why Capel should get a year 5. Because at this time next year, we are saying the same thing, and we wasted another year where another coach and staff could be at least selling forward vision and establishing relationships with recruits.
Let alone the basic responsibility of teaching X's and O's basketball.
@PittPoker made an error but 1 recruit in 2 classes is still pretty egregious.
Like most he can get emotional over the results but loves Pitt and keeps the board interesting with some of his threads/polls.
No he’s failing on any reasonable AD, Chancellor or Fan’s REAL timeline. Nothing “perceived” about it. They stink and there are ZERO recruits for next year. As @BballinsiderfromPitt says “Life Support”.

there shouldn't be a "blanket" across the board. Each situation is different. W's and L's are black and white.. but he's not just a coach. He's the leader of a million dollar company. He's graded in many different areas.
I agree 100% about it being egregious. No argument from me whatsoever. But this class isn’t over yet either. There have been a few names tossed around but as I said above quality is another matter. Even if he gets 1 this year I still think it’s unacceptable regardless of the portal.

He hasn’t had a winning season in his last 6 years as a head coach, didn’t win without Blake Griffin and is the only Oklahoma coach since 1980 to not make a final 4 and his program here has been a train wreck. How many data points do you need? It’s either this year or next year, but a new coach is needed.

Seriously asking, what have you seen to make you believe he’s ever going to win at Pitt? And why do you defend him so vehemently? I couldn’t care less if he’s fired or extended. I want Pitt to be good at hoops. I don’t care who the coach is. I just see absolutely no evidence he’s willing to do the things necessary to accomplish anything at a high level.
You should read Craig Meyer' article today in the PG. He writes about Capel and his team's collapses every season. And not just at Pitt. Literally everywhere the man has coached his teams stink down the stretch. I don't know what it's going to take to prove to you that Capel is not a good coach and certainly won't turn Pitt around. Wake up man.

I don’t see how anyone can look at the long term and think he’s still the man for the job.
And I don’t doubt he’s graded on many factors but anyone who thinks it’s not heavily weighted towards wins and losses is delusional. Having and molding good young men I’m sure is also a big deal. But past that there can’t be that many. factors re: his continued employment when the results are this bad.
I swear I was just thinking that. Could easily be true. Part of the program in some capacity, gets an account here to try and spin positives about Capel. Wouldn't surprise me in all honesty.

But it just is not happening and there is just no upward trajectory. If he had say 2-3 decent recruits, much different feel, but he has zero. Yeah, I know "transfer portal". But it works both ways and we can lose as much as we gain and therefore tread water or worse.
There is just no juice, nothing, no hope to sell to prospective recruits and fans alike. And again, this simple algebra I laid out above.

Scott drew took over an actual death penalty, has tangible progress and recruits in year 4. Hamilton was At a football school where they didn’t care.
Timelines are different now with the portal. You don’t need 5 years. If you can’t see anything within 3 then it’s probably over.
