Hate to be bearer of bad news

I think the most important thing in place right now is the coaching staff . If they can get this roster this close to winning games against far better teams with far more experienced players what will they accomplish when the roster is made of their recruits . Good times ahead for the patient !

One has to view it all in the proper context, considering where Pitt was 18 months ago, and the fact that the program is one or two players away from being middle of the pack in a very good ACC, leads to a good deal of hope and even anticipation as some other pieces are collected.

I’m not sure they are really close, but they aren’t far from being a bubble team. You add a solid big or two and another guard for next year I’d think that they could be in the 6-8 ACC win range. Of course too you hope guys like brown, Trey, toney, and xj progress.

The main thing is that there is Hope, where 12 months ago there was none.

Agreed - Two of the new players need to be interior players, and we need a good outside shooter. The others can be best player available.
Need more than one strong perimeter shooter. Every team needs a few especially if you don’t have a strong frontcourt.

should be easier to find those than the bigs.

Capel came in and put together a remarkable recruiting class last year under the circumstances. He appears to be having a real problem duplicating that this time around. There is time left but it’s getting down to the crumbs.

I think Brown will become more effective if he can be paired as a PF with a stronger more physical big playing center. The synergistic effect would help him a lot---even if he doesn't improve his skill set--and I think the skill set will continue to improve.

Even adequate depth would go a long way in helping with fatigue. Fresh legs on the main guys could do wonder to close out games. I’m not sure how many bigs left on the board would be better than Brown. He should have redshirted in most systems last year, but I’ve been impressed with his progress.

I like Brown's potential a lot - but I don't see the "quicks" to guard an ACC 4. Would rather get a strong rebounding 4 that can move.

I agree. I still have faith that Brown will turn the corner next year. He shows glimpses. It’s tough playing the minutes he does against ACC competition.

I think XJ, Trey, and Toney will improve their outside shooting with time. Of course, I wouldn’t mind 2 good outside shooters. Who wouldn’t? I am just giving the bare minimum.

Brown was a good fit in Stalkings scheme, because he liked to have two taller complimentary bigs like that.

But Brown will never play PF for HCJC. His whole paradigm is built on the 1-4 switching man defense, and 1 in, 4 out, offense.

There is hope HCJC can get another center, and they can share the 5 spot.

The main need to me is to keep the best players on this roster here for next season.

It’s not an indictment against Pitt or Capel, it’s just the way college basketball works in this era.

That along with a good shooter that isn’t a liability on defense and a serviceable big would go a long way to this team being NIT worthy next year.

If somehow we could combine our guards with Wake's big men, that team would really be fun to watch.

Just think about how bad we were the last 2 years and compare that to how our guys play now, even when they lose. We're in games most of the time and against teams with clearly superior talent. We're not losing by 25+ anymore. Those 2 years that we were really bad seem like an eternity away from now. If we can get even close to where we were in Dixon's last year, that will be a huge accomplishment and get us into the NIT. But it may be at least 1 more year away.

Or is Capel’s paradigm only for this season because of the current makeup of the roster?

Dixon’s last year was a gnat’s eyelash(nearly lost to A HORRIBLE Wake team) away from being in the NIT, so no, we ARE close to being where dixons last team was.

Very good?

Pitt lost at home to a 4-6 ACC team that put up 24 points last Saturday. They haven't won in almost a month. I'd pump the breaks on 'very good'.

N'Dir and JWF may have played their best games of the season today...that's good news...,wish they had one more year.

Huh? You need a history lesson!! In Dixon's worst year at Pitt, we won 19 games. 19 GAMES! His last year, we won 21. Please try and read what I posted again, because it is entirely accurate and true. We're not close to where we were with Dixon's worst team or his last team either. If we can get to 18 or 19 wins next year, with the 19 wins equaling Dixon's WORST year ever at Pitt, we'll be in the NIT or possibly the NCAA's if those 19 wins includes a couple of high quality wins and no really bad losses.

These guys play hard and this coach is getting us back. It will take time. Remember, we basically were dead the last 2 years under Sleepy.

Not only the players, but the coaches and AD.

There's a difference between going 8-10 and 9-9 in the ACC with upperclassmen who have topped out their abilities and going 8-10 with all freshmen and sophomores leading the way.

These Dixon teams weren't very good and had the upside of being a fringe NCAA team.

The primary difference is
One thing actually happened
And the other is not close to happening this year or next year in all likelihood.

It's going to be interesting how this class shapes up and ends: Probably 5-7 scholarships will be available. Would hope for a 1 HS and 1 Grad Transfer big. A sharp shooter and maybe a PG, not sure of the class though. Then best players available. We'll see about the Champagnie twins and the possibility of them re-classifying and then the 2020 class could be very nice. I think Pitt's class will really heat up in March-June.

We'll see how Pitt ends the season record-wise, but I wonder if they'll get into a CBI or CIT even, not really sure. There's some ACC wins out there to be had.

What teams will we be able to beat that are remaining on the schedule? Maybe BC and Miami? That's why I'm still sticking with 4 ACC wins for this year. That would give us 14 wins for the season, and that won't get us to any tournaments.

Well I'm not saying we'll win them all, but BC, Georgia Tech and Clemson will all be games that based on current information we would probably be a point or two underdogs in, and we would be favored over Notre Dame by probably four or five if we were playing them right now. Similarly we would be about a four point underdog at Miami. So what teams *could* we beat? We *could* easily beat about five of them. The real question is what teams *will* we beat. And if we knew the answers to that we could make a lot of money down at the casino.

I get what you're saying and I tend to agree with most of what you post. Your posts always make a lot of sense to me. But the way Clemson is playing lately, I doubt we "could" beat them. Yes, BC, Miami and ND are "could" wins. I think we'll win 2 of those.

That being said, I sincerely hope you're right and we win 5 more games the rest of the year. That would be awesome!

If I was putting money down on these games I’d keep beating against Pitt at this point ( depending on spread ) until they show that they can win a game .

You think Pitt is going 7-0 or 6-1 to finish the season at 9-9 or 8-10?
