Hats off to Chaney for using Whitehead on offense

Big decision to make, and it paid off hugely. The INT in the endzone he could have played better, and his lack of experience might have been the difference in a TD or that pick, but just great thinking to play him

Well, good idea no matter who it was.

We have 400 total yards on offense, moved the ball well for most the day. Just couldnt compete with their QB and OL on defense.

Just amazing Whitehead is a Freshman

Let's see, a bunch of armchair OCs on this board have been calling for it since fall camp, we have desperately needed an explosive playmaker all year, we don't get this guy an offensive snap until week 9, and now Chaney is a genius for finally getting the kid a couple touches in what ends up being a lopsided loss?

Nice that Whitehead finally got some long overdue touches, but it's hard to give Chaney much credit for anything right now IMO.

Yeah, I was thinking "hmmm, lacking from this thread would be a really negative post from a guy that knows nothing about football"

Sure, it makes obvious sense to start a true freshman on both sides of the ball from day one. And for sure a 42-30 game with a yardage total of 437-400 sure sounds atrociously lopsided... but, yeah, I definitely still give Chaney, who certainly has had issues this year, credit for using him on offense, and giving him a chance to make plays.

Not to start an argument but playing a starting Safety on offense is NOT a decision that the OC made.

It's not an argument... But of course Chaney had a say in it, he said he wanted him on offense in spring.

That said Chaney isn't looking good at all... But I don't know how you make this offense look amazing. We aren't bad, 400 yards and 30 points against the #5 team. You can't watch this game and think the offense lost this game

Don't care how it happen or who made the call, I am glad it happen, and hope it would have happen in the UNC game, but a few times in the future with Jordan will not be bad either?

Great call by a Great Coaching Staff learning from every loss!

Uh... Yes we are bad.

And yes you can think the offense (or at least the OC) lost this game... At least as much as the defense did. Plus we should never have gone for the onside kick at that point... It was too early and too costly.

13 of the 30 points came at the end of the game when we were all but out of reach. NDs defense was not playing us as tough once they went up 42 - 17.

We had 3 points out of the offense in the first half- inexcusable.

Defense gave up a lot too... But the offense deserved plenty of the blame once again.

I didn't have much issue with the onside kick. I may be wrong, but Pitt either held Notre Dame to a three and out when they stopped them, or gave up a long TD drive. So starting position didn't matter too much in this game.
Like the fake punt a few weeks ago, it's a genius call if it works. This time it didn't.

As for the offense, it was mixed. Yards gained was similar, even before garbage time, but the difference was Notre Dame finished and Pitt didn't.
I found it real ominous early on when Pitt unloaded 2-3 gadget plays on that one drive (the 2nd?) and settled for a 21 yard FG.

ND recovered, drove, but we had a big sack to lead into sweet caroline. Crowd was fired up, but ND got a TD and basically that was the ballgame.

I didn't have a problem with the onsides; the way ND was moving, they probably score TD starting from 25 same as starting from 50.

Two weeks in a row with only 3 points in 1st half. Add even a single TD for 10 first half points and we might win vs UNC and ND is competitive.

Hopefully we score some first half TDs vs Duke!

We definitely should have. That's usually not an excuse but Boyd dropped a crucial TD pass early that even a walk on should've been able to catch. That was honestly one of the best passes Peterman has ever thrown.

It was a good idea, but why did Chaney abandon the run with 12 minutes left in the second quarter, when running the ball was working? It was obvious we were struggling to stop ND's offense. We needed to work the clock in the second quarter and score a TD and keep the ball out of their hands and regroup at halftime. If we go into halftime down 14-10 or even 21-10, that's better than 21-3. If we used some clock by running, they may not have gotten their last possession to make it 21-3. He gave up on the run when Ollison was having success running up the middle.

He stalled a drive by trying the throw back to Pederman. When we were running well, you continue doing it.

Exactly... Chaney has done it two games now... Abandoned Ollison who showed he can move the chains going up the middle. Instead of just continuing with the play until the defense proves it can't stop him, Chaney's ADD kicks in and he just has to try something different for no logical reason. You know like his brilliant call to run the sweep to the short side of the field with no room for the RB to turn the corner. Automatic loss of 2.

Chaney has no patience for Ollison in the power running game. He wants to get to the razzle dazzle. Not that a good trick play isn't appreciated, but first let your best RB help your offense get in rhythm and control the tempo and get multiple first downs when you see he can do it. Do that and he will break a few, like he did earlier in the season. And for goodness sake, run him when you are close to the goal line for a much likelier TD, instead of throwing a couple of low percentage pass plays. The second straight game he's done this... And with no success.

When will he learn? Will he learn? Will Narduzzi allow this to continue possibly leading to another loss?

I sure hope not.

Some Pitt fans are looking at Pitts 30 points and thinking the offense did well. Let's put it into perspective: Aside form the busted coverage TD pass to Boyd where the ND defense had backed off a bit (at a time when the game was all but out of reach), Pitt only scored 2 offensive TDs. And both of those were by our stud, starting safety.

I hate to say it, but I really would not be surprised if Ollison transfers. I think Chaney personally has a problem with him and it's clear he will not take the time to teach a young player what to do instead he just gets frustrated with his mistakes and punishes him. Chaney's ego is way to big IMO.
