Hats off to the Lady Panthers!

Why do they let the women have home games in the NCAA tournament? Are they that hard up to attract fans? Always tough for the 10 seed to play the 2 seed, but seems REALLY unfair to make Pitt play Tennessee in the tournament on the Lady Vols home court. Oh well. Hail to Pitt!

Wait until Suzie has a full roster at her disposal. Good times ahead for the female hoopsters.

--Congrats especially to Brianna Kiesel. She really deserves to experience an NCAA tourney win. Played a good, solid game.

--How the heck did this Chattanooga team beat Tennessee and Stanford???

--Stasha Carey seemed rejuvenated by the break between games. Ended up with 13 rebounds and 16 points. Once she learns to get more under control and makes more of those layup attempts, she'll be really awesome.

--Cora McManus played a really important role in this win - she held her own and chewed up some minutes when Pitt was getting into foul trouble in the first half.

--Nice solid game by Aysia Bugg hitting 3 of 7 jumpers.

--What was disappointing is that Pitt was only 1 for 9 from three. Maybe that means we'll be due to make some against Tennessee...

--Was surprised that Chelsea Welsh didn't play - she plays good defense. And she didn't go in even at the end of the game - makes me wonder if she's injured...

The "Bonus Season" for the Pitt women's team continues.

Go Pitt.

They tried....

moving to all neutral site games. It was, for the most part, a disaster. They'd end up with some games being played to very small crowds if there weren't any teams from nearby playing. Even when the local team was playing, since there were two sessions at each site in the first round they would frequently end up with one session, the one with the local team playing, where the crowd was pretty good and the other session with the building mostly empty. So they went back to the top four seeds hosting the first two rounds of games.

The NCAA would really like to move all or at least most of the games to neutral sites, but the women's game mostly can't support that right now. They have decided for now that having larger crowds and better atmosphere in the arenas trumps neutral sites.

I figured as much. But wow, it really stacks the deck against the higher seeds to advance. Seems to me that it devalues the champion a bit...but I certainly get that economics has to play a role in a tournament. Would be a huge and awfully sweet win to beat the Lady Vols on the 23rd! Let's go Pitt! Hail to Pitt!

I could see how....

Chattanooga could beat a good team. They slow the game down so it's a low possession game and then they make shots. They only shot 26% today, and only 17% on threes. Obviously those are both well below their averages. If they make shots they could easily be in the game with a good team. Make a bunch of threes and slow the game down to a crawl and you can hang with or beat a better team.

Now I don't know that that is what happened in those games. But I could see how something like that could happen. Chattanooga seems to clearly not be on the same level as those two teams, but I think they are also clearly better than they played today.

I agree....

that it certainly stacks the deck in favor of the top seeds. However I would also point out that most NCAA team sports play their championship playoff games on the home courts/fields of the top seeds, at least until they get further into the tournament. Baseball plays the first two weekends on home fields of the higher seeded teams. Softball too. Mens and womens soccer stays on campus until the semifinals. Volleyball is on campus the first weekend. Really mens basketball is the outlier with all games on neutral sites. Football too at the 1A level, but it's a little different when the tournament starts with the semifinals. Football at all the lower levels stays on campus until the championship game.

Re: Reply

Yes. The women's tournament is nowhere near as attractive as the men's. They have always Played opening rounds at the home of the top seeds.

20th win for the women's team - amazing season...

That was the 20th win for the women's team. Sweet!

Somehow they won 20 with starting 4 players who were not on the team the year before -- 3 true freshmen and one volleyball player. Double sweet!!

Last time the women won 20 games was the 2008-2009 season when they went 25-8 - also the last time they made the NCAA tourney.

Go Pitt.

No, they have not....

always played the opening rounds at the home of the top seeds. In fact a few years ago Pitt hosted the opening rounds at the Pete in a year that Pitt did not make the tournament. Attendance was, well, poor. As it was a many other places that hosted that did not have a nearby team involved. That was why a year or two ago they switched back to the top seeds hosting.

One takeaway from the game was that teams who play slowball

simply can't play hurryup when behind. Chattanooga was taking almost the whole clock down by 7 or more under 2 minutes.

The Pitt ladies played smart defense....gave them the trey, contested the rest. Keisel is just a smart, smart player. Money.

Suzie should be COY.

I noticed this during the game, but Chelsea wasn't on the bench. And in the interview with Coach Suzie that Livewire just posted, she mentioned 3 people on her bench (Cora, Potvin, Jordan) and mentioned Gordon/Bubbles as injured, but no mention of Welch. So I wonder what happened there.

It is somewhat astonishing that she didn't get ACC COY.

Really neat day with this win and Wilps in the NCAA final tonight. Remember hitting Coach SMS' introductory event at the Panther Club - I had a strong sense things would be good, but never along this timeline. Heck of a ride this year.

Kiesel getting a win is obviously great, but also happy for Wignot as this is also her first national tournament experience of any kind as a Pitt athlete. For someone who has been so dedicated to Pitt, it was nice to see get rewarded in that way. I expect her to be on a mission against Tennessee.

Carey - goodness. What a player. Was surprised by Bugg's shot making, didn't know she was capable of that on this stage.

Maybe, but.....

the choice of the Florida State coach can be easily defended. They were supposed to be a middle of the pack ACC team. There were six ACC teams in the preseason top 25 poll, and Florida State wasn't one of them. Yet they ended up second in the conference and ranked number seven in the last poll and got a two seed in the NCAA tournament.

Both coaches did much more than what they were predicted to, but they picked the coach who's team had the far better season. That's certainly not unusual.

Some additional thoughts on women's game

--A key factor in yesterday's win was that Stasha Carey went 6 for 7 from the free throw line. She had started the season well, but lately, she's been really miserable on foul shots - ending the season around 50%. In the ACC tourney loss to VT, she was 5 for 11; the game before that she was 1 for 5. So getting her confidence back was big.

--Another key was the 5 points scored by Cora McManus in 5 minutes of play. She usually takes a few shots to get warmed up, but she came out scoring yesterday - shooting 2 for 3.

--Even though Pitt won by 9, this was a close game until later in the game. Had Carey not made the foul shots and had McManus not scored 5 points in the first half, the game could have turned around - fortunately, the Mocs never got the lead and never got the chance to feed off the home crowd...

--I was really impressed with Stasha Carey in this game. At first, I wasn't even sure who that player was - she seemed to have so much energy - plus she had a new hairdo... She -- along with Yacine Diop -- are going to be really fun to watch over the next 3 seasons.

--I'm also encouraged about Aysia Bugg. I like her demeanor on the court. She picks her spots to be aggressive to the hoop. While she only shot 34% this season (and a poor 20% from 3), she can shoot the 12-15 foot jumpers fairly well (a la Cam Wright). I expect that improving her shooting will be an emphasis in the off-season.

--In any event, the three frosh, Carey, Diop and Bugg, provide a nice core for next year's team - especially if Bubbles can come back.

--Still wondering what happened to Chelsea Welch. She played against VT in the ACC tourney, but she didn't seem to be around for the NCAA announcement celebration...

Go Pitt.

Majors, I know.....

you love you some Cora McManus, but come on. Yeah, she scored five points. How many did she give up? She had two defensive rebounds that went over her head because she couldn't get off the ground for them that she still had the clearest path to the ball but didn't get because she just couldn't get to it before the UTC player. One of those two turned into a basket. She had another play where after a UTC defensive rebound she was at least ten feet ahead of the UTC center running down the court and yet by the time they got to the other end the UTC center was shooting a layup while McManus was just getting to the foul line. She may have scored five, but how many did she give up?

There's a reason that she didn't play at all in the second half until there were about five minutes left, and then only played about a minute before she got taken out. I hate picking on her, in fact I considered not posting this, because I think she gives this team absolutely everything she has. Unfortunately what she has just isn't very good. Certainly her scoring five while getting no rebounds and playing poorly defensively is better than her not scoring five while getting no rebounds and playing poor defensively.

It looked to me like the time off really helped several players, most notably Carey. If we can get the same kind of play tomorrow but also get Wignot going again we could make things interesting.

Re: Majors, I know.....

I fully realize that Cora McManus has limitations. I also don't like to be critical of Pitt athletes (probably because I was a Pitt athlete a long time ago and, try as I might, I wasn't always exactly perfect).

That said, my point was that when Cora came into the game, by scoring those 5 points, she kept the game about even and importantly, I think, helped prevent Chattanooga from ever getting the lead. Cora ate up some minutes - maybe saving Carey from another foul -- without Pitt getting behind. I thought that was significant, especially given the rash of mysterious charging fouls that Pitt was having early in the game...

I agree with you about the break between games helping the team. Carey really looked like a different player to me with how well she was running the floor.

Go Pitt.

Re: I could see how....

Chattanooga beat both the Lady Vols and Stanford this season.

The Lady Vols have four players sitting on the bench and unable to play, including their leading scorer and rebounder.

Should be a heck of a game tomorrow night.
