Jason said Nike is a very good defensive player and we missed that last season.

Is Nike a very good defensive player?

Doubt that was actually said about Horton by the coaches. I certainly never recall it or even anyone commenting about it.

However, there were remarks to the effect that Horton was the best 3-ball shooter on the Pitt team during the year he was sitting out and that he was really going to help when he became eligible. As far as that goes, the 3-ball remarks were probably a true enough statement since a lack of adequate team 3-ball shooting has been a problem throughout Capel's tenure.

“I tell our guys that if you can guard him in practice, I haven’t seen a better guy in this league that they will have to guard,” Capel added on Horton.

Gertz did a breakdown of him.
I believe the take away is that he's a decent defender. But not great. Not bad

It was absolutely said about Horton and it was almost as stupid as this comment is. This comment takes the cake for a multitude of reasons.
1) he’s coming off an ACL
2) he was never known as a defender at Miami
3) if he’s such a great defender why could he not see the floor at all his first year until half the team quit?

It’s stupid things like this and the Horton comment they say in interviews that even with the slight uptick in recruiting make me believe there won’t be any meaningful improvement because they don’t know what they’re looking at. Always undersell and overdeliver not the other way!!!

Very true. It's good to see some fans finally having some optimism about what this team is perceived to be this year. But I'm reserving my judgement until I see them play against ACC competition. I've heard the hype from the coaches before and I doubt they even know what they're looking at most of the time. I can't trust them to suddenly know now. I'd rather see the results and some indication they can play in this program and in this league.

Undersell and overdeliver is always a good way to approach it.

The OOC schedule should give an inkling of what to expect later. if they go 9-2 or better OOC there should be some optimism for the ACC schedule given that those 11 games will include the Legends Classic (Pitt, Arizona, Michigan VCU), West Virginia and the ACC B10 Challenge game on the road.

Who scheduled this? They should be playing 11 low D1’s

if they go 9-2 against that ooc given they’ll most likely drop at least one WTF game like always Capel should be extended

Capel and "extension"
mentioned in the same
sentence on here. Now
that's a first. Aside from
that, I can't imagine a
9-2 OOC start with this
group against that pre
league schedule.

ACC move from 18 to 20 games plus wanting to play West Virginia has killed any return to playing Duquesne regularly. I suppose they could play occasionally or instead of West Virginia.

The logic--

(1) Need to play in an early season holiday tourney for exposure.
(2) ACC requires 20 games (up from 18 a few years ago).
(3) ACC requires B10 Challenge game.
(4) ACC requires scheduling an ACC game in December.
(5) Only 7 (vs the former 9) OOC games are left to schedule.

Wasn't eligible to start then spent extended time with covid - is the answer you are looking for.

Oh, yeah, there’s also the return trip @ Vanderbilt lol

maybe it’s extra good that the average age of our starting lineup will be 25 years old

Yeah - this publicly known issues with Miami not releasing him and then COVID -
Apparently weren’t inside enough info

With that OOC, I see possibly 6-5 if they're lucky and get some breaks. Remember, this is a Capel-coached team. And 6 wins for him with that schedule would be overachievement.

Forgot about the return visit to Vanderbilt---so 9-2 or better will be even more difficult a target.

As to the coaching issue, I remain uncertain how much of the "coaching" problems were Xs & Os problems vs how much a lack of talent and depth.

This time around there is more depth for certain and it would appear better talent---We should find out this coming season whether the problem has been mainly Xs and Os and motivation; or if it has been more the lack of talent and quality depth.

IMHO, a good Xs and Os guy should be able to get at least 18 total wins--maybe even 20 wins--(OOC + ACC + ACCT) out of this new roster, IMHO.

He practiced then was stuck behind XJ, Horton, Femi is the real answer. If they thought he was that good defensively with his offense and couldn’t play over Horton… well ya know, that’s pretty bad coaching.

He’s absolutely not a better defender than XJ. He’s probably between Femi and Horton on defense. Hyping up a guy coming off an ACL who is an athlete as the missing link because of defense is stupid.

They’ve addressed every need in recruiting for once. More shooting, more ball handlers, more wings and bigs to spell John. Not sure what the point of rehashing the last 2 years of failure would be. Especially acting like Nike Sibandie was the missing piece. It’s very odd.

I'm not sure anyone on this new roster is much of a plus defender. They should struggle in that area.
Nike is probably average at best. And he's coming off an acl..

I thought the Marq. Transfer was and Jawara if we get him?

Probably don't consider Duquesne "cupcake" enough for one of the 7 open OOC slots but lately there haven't been any cupcakes for this team--as bad as it has been.
