For anyone interested, here's an article/interview that was just in the Canton Repository on Heather Lyke. They have it because she's a graduate of a local high school out here, GlenOak. Actually has some interesting info in the article I hadn't heard before. And will likely also be of interest since she discusses a couple topics of frequent/popular debate herein, an On-campus stadium, and downsizing/tarping Heinz field.

As an aside, I know a good number of people at GlenOak from when she was there since my wife worked there as well - teachers, principals, BB coach, AD, others. One's I've talked to speak highly and think she'll do well at Pitt.

Wasn’t all that much in the article, with the exception it sounds like tarps are coming to Heinz Field and the Panthers are staying there for the
long term

Yeah, like I said, comments from her on an on-campus stadium and downsizing Heinz. I hadn’t heard before where she was for tarping of Heinz Field so that was new to me.

Aside from that, just the ‘quaint’ little story on the wrestling trophy and that’s about it.

Leave it to a non Pittsburgh local newspaper to get actual news from Pitt's AD.

I hope they do the tarping well. There are ways that it can really be screwed up, and since it's Pitt at the helm, you never know.
Such as they have a bright yellow blank tarp that makes it look worse

i want to buy in. But we have heard the same crap from the past 4 AD's. (SP squared)

No one can blame Pitt fans if they lack enthusiasm right now.

That said.....I am pulling for her.

It is actually really simple. Just make it look similar to this. Heinz even has the a similar design where the first five or so rows in the upper decks could be left open and sold as premium seats.

Of course, they will probably go with the current colors for the tarps and then when the Nike study comes out a few months later the team will be wearing a completely different shade of blue and gold.

Actually a good article and encouraging. Seems she wants to win and is very open where we stand now.

Also first I've read where tarping is in the plans and we are close to extending the psu game.

That would be great to extend the PSU game. In addition to the obvious economic benefits, it will drive the hardcore Nitters crazy (the casual ones especially in western PA tend to enjoy the game but the real loonies don't want to play Pitt.)

Do you think she will be able to extend the series ? If so, when is the earliest it would start back up ?

She states in the article they are very close to extending it. However, I bet it will be the mid/late 2020s before we play again after this series.

TARPS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right sizing is the way to go in life. I’ve been doing it for years and I’m loving it!!!

This picture just gave me an idea. Tarp one side of the upper deck with a giant Heinz pickle tarp. Tarp the other side with a giant Heinz ketchup bottle. Heinz will foot the bill as advertising.

On a related note, I would think that if they were clever, they could look at the tarp as a opportunity. Build a tarp that embeds a series of programmable LED's. You could literally sell in-game ads. Empty seats could actually produce revenue.

Cruzer

Not sure if that would be feasible, but it's a good suggestion.

Yeah my guess is 2026. We already have Notre Dame AND West Virginia in 2025. Penn State already has Virginia Tech in 2025, but nothing in 2026.

If they tarp, I’m out. I’m not dealing with it and pretending the atmosphere is better because they tarp 30,000 seats. Tarps basically indicate they’ve given up on trying to fill the place up. Pitt gives up, I give up. Hire a better coach and assistants who can actually recruit and win. Then see what happens.

Honestly I understand where you are coming from. With that said can we agree that maybe tarping is a good idea for the short term. Pitt is not going to get 30,000 new fans in the next year or so. It needs built back up. If Pitt is still using a tarp in 2027 then I agree with you that they gave up. If they tarp in the next few seasons, I think it is prudent of them.

But Pitt literally has no chance of getting 70k fans vs YSU, Rice, or even low level ACC teams. Absolutely none. We could win a national championship and come back ranked #1 in the country and that would still be true. Are you threatened by the truth?

LOL - Over 100+ years of Pitt Football what makes u think we could sellout a 70k seat facility on a consistent basis? Use your brain.

Your second suggestion is excellent. Explore all the possibilities for using high-tech graphics, like they do now in some stage shows.

Would love to see a Panther race across the tarp - or across the field, when Pitt scores. Stuff like that...

Go Pitt

Pitt can't do the same thing and hope 60K-70K show up so it provides a good gameday atmosphere.

70K is too big for Pitt, too big for TCU, Stanford, Oregon, Texas Tech, etc. There is no reason why Pitt shouldn't close off sections with or without tarping to move people closer together so the place looks and feels more full.

We can’t. Pitt doomed itself when it took a bulldozer to Pitt Stadium. A renovation was needed and I do think with a winning team and attractive marketing, it would draw more than it currently does.

Is anyone surprised at her comments regarding the baseball facility being in the middle of the road? Is Cost Field already dated or didn't we invest enough when we upgraded?

I think we invested what we could because it needed a major upgrade. And over the years, renovations will bring it up to par.

We have only been in Heinz for about 15 years or so. What is the excuse for not filling 56k seat Pitt Stadium?

Tarps around the sidelines and tunnels already reflect the 70s/80s color scheme.

I was 10 when Pitt stadium closed. I don’t know what the attendance was like in the 70-80-90’s and frankly, I don’t care. There’s a new demographic of fans, and new opportunities to get butts in seats. Although, I’ll admit...Pitt has wasted a generation of possible fans for a multitude of reasons.

When did the truth become controversial? If you look at the baseball stadiums across the P5 landscape and at places like Rice, I am candidly surprised it is as high as middle od the road.
Had I been included in the design process, I would have put Pitt's version of the "green monster" in left field to distinguish it from other venues...I would make the wall blue, btw.

That was being kind. Our baseball facility is probably the worst in the ACC. The good news is that Trees Field would have been the worst in the WPIAL. We went from a HS facility to a mid-major facility. A massive upgrade but nowhwere close to other ACC teams.

Tarp should just be a Hitchcock like silhouette of Mike Ditka in navy with an old gold background.
