Heather Lyke Quote On Capel/Team

So there are five main facets to coaching NCAA basketball
1) keep a clean program - Capel has had individuals with legal issues, causing players to miss games but no serious violation - I give him a C+
2) Recruiting - F Players arent ACC caliber players and you couldnt get one recruit for next year. WTF??? This is also heavily on the assistants you have hired. All these failed former coaches havent exactly brough much with them and stop giving a free payout to your brother
3) Coaching X's and O's - D You could say its the talent level but we dont exactly run many successful sets
4) Player motivation - B+ I do think they are still trying. There were many games in the Stallings era where the team just game up in games. But he still craps the bed in the first half too many times. Again this is more #3 and coaching than players trying
5)fan excitement in program - F Attendance all i have to say

His best grade is player motivation?

Does that grade include all his years here or just this season?

I've yet to hear any specific incident of mistreatment. "This coach isn't nice and doesn't know how to relate to me" is not mistreatment.

It's obvious character assassination to attempt to lower a buyout. It’s bush league garbage that is typical Auburn.

That may be true but 20 players transferred after the season and 5 coaches left. That isnt normal even in these times. Whether true or not, a scandal will be created if it needs to be and Auburn will save buyout money

BTW, I don't know what some of you guys are reading but the extra quotes in the Trib article are very positive towards Capel and the program and go way beyond "AD speak." Her Stallings quotes were AD speak. Her gushing about Hugley sounded more like me than an AD looking to fire a coach in 5 weeks.

Tend to agree.

Hoping someone gets to her and changes her mind.

AD's are just the public face behind the hiring/firing process. It's rarely their call to make. In some instances it is, but it isn't very common that an AD has that much autonomy with the revenue sports.

I've always thought they would support him and let the season play out, then make a decision based on that and reading the tea leaves going forward. I think it's become obvious the last 2 weeks where this season is headed, and where the program is at relative to the rest of the league. I really can't see how they bring him back at this point.

One thing that she is clearly correct about---not being "at the talent level" the team needs to be. I am not convinced that another coach would be doing significantly better this season given the current roster makeup. Maybe a Tony Bennet might eek out a couple more wins than Capel is going to get this season.

The current too low a level of talent (due to weak recruiting) is on Capel, of course.

IMHO, Capel's only hope to survive beyond the one more season Pitt appears likely to give him is if Capel "hits the lottery" with the transfer portal and produces a wining record in the 2022-23 season.

Capel would certainly be gone after next season unless he at least makes the NIT but even if he does, he would have to return enough of a core to make it reasonable to believe they could make the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Every button Lyke pushes on Capel seems to fail miserably.

She needs to tell him its mandatory that he hire a package deal assistant. Sometimes, 1 guy like that is all it takes. If they paid the guy from TCU $1 million, they get the Miller brothers and make the NCAA Tournament. That's unlikely but there's other assistants out there like that

ACC morning guys talking about VT’s chances. “Well…they can’t play Pitt every night…” How sad.
VT is really really good. Tons of offensive talent on that team. No reason for them to start 2-7. An elite big + guards who can shoot the lights out. That's a dream scenario for any team.

They’re not gonna pay one guy the entire assistant budget and the one Miller just transferred and has no grounds for a second waiver. The other Miller is likely going pro

That was an example. I also like Matt Abdelmassih from Nebraska who will be unemployed soon. He orchestrated Iowa State paying NY/NJ kids to go to Ames

Dude she tried that.

I agree. The question to ask is what would be different next season if no changes are made? Results will be similar if not worse.

But I could also see the one more chance scenario with an ultimatum to bring in a new staff. Kind of a line in the sand. Would Capel accept that or just say the hell with it and take the buyout.

I offer nothing but an opinion but I would see it more likely he takes the buyout before replacing his staff.

So good they're 14-10, unranked, and 9th place with a losing record in a down league. Really, really good.

Yea, I don't understand how they started 2-7. They return their best player along with most players from an NCAAT team. Have one of the best bigs in the nation along with one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the nation. I think they probably are the 2nd most talented team in the ACC. They were picked 5th.

If that were the case, I think he would take the buyout.

Knowing they only have 1 year left, perhaps Brown or O'Toole leave on their own for a better or equal opportunity??? 1 assistant coach who brings a player with him changes everything.

Do you think the chances of Hugley transferring have increased based on what has transpired in the last several games?

This is your last shot at coaching D1 P6 ball and if the AD says I want you to alter your staff and hire so and so whose the greatest thing since Slice ( get it ) bread you do it .

Normally, I would say yes but he and his coach seemed tied at the hip with Capel so I think he will be back. Plus you have the fact that Capel stood by him instead of booting him.

Let's see....Hugley will transfer, Mo will be gone, I think at least 1 other player will transfer, probably 2. And no recruits coming in. Probably none of any impact in the portal. It's time.

Normally I'd agree with that. In this case, because of his brother & just the reality of the situation, that another season would do little but pile up more losses, I think he would take the buyout.

Just my opinion. You may be right though.

If it came down to my job (JC ) or fire my brother I’d believe my brother would resign first rather than having their brother lose their job because of them .

I tend to agree. He is owed so much money that there is a lot of incentive for him to say "nope, buyout please." He can pocket 8 figures and go lay on the beach for a few years and then go coach an HBCU. Another winner of the Pitt Basketball Coaching Lottery.

I agree with your logic but I do not believe these are normal circumstances. I believe Capel feels so arrogantly above the Pitt program that he truly believes Pitt will be the loser in this. Also, because of this he is not firing his brother over this gig.

I sure hope not, 48-63 gives absolutely nobody the reason to feel arrogant or above a certain program.

JC probably doesn’t think his brother or other staff members are the issue , but is he really in a position of power if he wants to continue as a HC ?

He’s in a powerful position from a financial standpoint, but that’s an entirely different issue , coaching is in his blood and being the head cheese is far better than being an assistant.

And I don’t think the man is a quitter .

He isn't going back to being an assistant. There are plenty of lower mid-majors or low majors that will take him. And he will have tons of money banked thanks to the Heather Lyke Lottery that he can afford to go coach an HBCU for 200K/year

Agree with this, no way would be take another assistant position.
