I will be attending a wedding this summer in State College, PA. It is my oldest friend's daughter, so I will go and try to be on my best behavior. Does anyone have any suggestions about restaurants, bars, etc. that I will be able to go to without totally wanting to hurl and without leaving feeling like I need to bathe in a tub full of 409 (although there are some stains that even 409 can't remove)?

Thanks for any and all help.

Just go to Wegman's and sit facing a wall so you can eat without looking at people.

I'll be going to a wedding this summer there, as well. In early July. A second cousin of mine getting married in July to a young lady from the Pittsburgh area. Both Penn State grads. I'll take the same advice.

Thank god I have no reason to go anywhere near "Joepaland".....

Your only good option is to endear yourself with local migrant workers and learn their local hot-spot to eat and drink. You will find most are are fun-loving, will welcome you, and are just as creeped out by the Cult as the rest of us.

Take a cooler and a chipped ham sandwich... I would never spend a dime at that place.

Quaker Steak and Lube! Been there in my full Pitt gear and was treated fine. If I wasn't there would have been a problem. For them! HATE PSU!

Relax, and don't go to friggin Quaker Steak and Lube. Aside from the Nits, State College ain't that bad of a town. Good Thai/Sushi place there, but it is BYOB. But no Nit stuff. I think it is called Kamrai, and it is outside the city, but not far from like the Hilton Garden inn. Zola is a nice little place. Spats is OK (sort of Cajun).

Don't go to Letterman's or the Nittany Lion Inn to avoid cult like overdose. Though it is kind of fun being in enemy territory, like you are a double agent.

Rotellis, great bar, know the owner, fantastic guy. Yes a psu fan but still a good guy. Tell him swervin27 from bethel sent you.

Try Otto's,if you like craft beer. They have decent food and good beer. Sure, you'll see PSU fans there but the place itself is not over the top psu. In fact, I'm not sure there is much if any psu decor.

If it's summer, you'll be fine. I like to wear my Pitt hat when I wander into town on occasion. Plenty of fun harassment but nothing bad.

how do you direct message on this thing? I can recommend a number of places based on where you are staying.

Why now in this country, you can't be friends with a fan of a rival? Or you can't discuss things with fans of a rival? Why? What happened to civil discourse. Same thing has happened in politics. If you for the other party, people think it is a character flaw. Both sides. I mean look at the Food Writer who quit a newspaper because it endorsed Trump. Just deal with it. I find the most amazing couple in America to be Mary Matalin and James Carville.

Why can't people coexist? And this is throw out to "progressives" with their clever COEXIST symbol bumper sticker, you want to co-exist and respect all races, sexual orientations and religions, but Christ if someone is a white conservative, they are the devil to you. How is that "COEXISTING"? Hypocrites. And the White Conservatives don't want to COEXIST with anyone, they just want to keep to their own and build walls.

Second the suggestions for Otto's if you like craft beer. The beer is pretty good as is the food. Nothing to write home about but solid and the place is nice. Champs Sports bar has good bar food and a nice draft selection. All American Ale House at Toftrees is a nice place.

In "downtown" State College things are likely to be more PSU themed or PSU decor heavy.

Well, my advice would be to just send a gift. Ive heard of prisoners of war who are trapped in cages submerged to their chest and surrounded by rats have come to state college and then voluntarily went back to their captors begging them to take them back.

On the plus side, it is likely devoid of cock roaches, as even they have standards. It is like a town full of walmart shoppers the day after disability checks come in. Oh I can say is may god be with you. You should probably make a courtesy call to your insurance professional to up the life insurance and make sure that you voluntarily going there doesnt set off an at will clause that would keep your next of kin from getting any insurance money

I went to PSU for Law School, so I spent some time there. When I was ignoring the studying I had to do, I checked these places out....

My two favorite places or slightly off campus:
(1) Faccia Luna - Food. great brick-fired pizza and italian joint (more locals); and
(2) American Ale House - Food & Drinks. Great gumbo, but just a great atmosphere. Tends to be more of a grad school/adult hangout. Probably my favorite place in state college.

On campus, I like:
Spats - Food. Also decent Cajun fare, but if you dont mind a cab ride, Id rather go to American Ale House.
Liberty Craft House - Food & Drinks. Can get State-y but good food and large selection of beer.
Pickles - Food & Drink. Its bar food, but its my kind of bar. Laid back, large windows open when its nice, not usually too crowded until late or on game days.
Pho 11 - If you like Pho, this is the place to go. Great pho.

Breakfast - Please get a breakfast burrito at the Frazer Street Deli. You will not be disappointed. Im not a big breakfast burrito fan, but I dream of theirs.

Most bars on campus are going to be State-y, but my best guess where you can go lessen that effect is: Kildares, The Rathskeller, Inferno and the Allen Street Grill.

Champs is an okay off campus spot. Decent food, normal drink selection. Average sports bar.

I know Otto's has a reputation, but it moved locations about 5 years ago and changed menus and really went downhill in my opinion.

Go to the right hand corner of your screen and you will see your handle. Next to it is an envelope icon. Click on it and fill in the OP's handle in the participant's box and follow with your message. Voila!
