Here are some of the excuses I've heard from people about why they were NOT...

THIS JUST IN...

It's a Sunday night and there's a football game being played at Heinz Field. This game will start an hour later then yesterday's Pitt - Marshall game (on the eve of a workday for most tomorrow). The "home team" is playing a team that they are better then and should beat Kansas City comfortably. People had to make choices all day for this event. Do they...
- Give up watching their child play a sport this afternoon?
- Do they spend $300.00 on two seats for the game?
- Do they fight the traffic to get there"?
- Do they complain about the price of parking?
- Do they complain about the cost of beer and food?
- Do they complain about standing in a line to pee?
- Do they complain about the yinzer standing in front of them to cheer?
- Do they get wet sitting in their seats in the rain?
- Do they get to the stadium 5 hours before kickoff to tailgate?
OBVIOUSLY...we all know the answers to these and every other excuses that was listed in the original post, they ATTEND the game and SUPPORT the home team.
That's what "real fans" do.

I've been to my fair share of big games. It's amazing how much you miss being there vs watching it on tv.

Of course there are also a lot of things that you see by being there that you never see on television. If all you ever want to do is watch the ball then television is great. If you want to see why things are happening the way that they are then television has never been able to compare to actually being there.

at the Marshall - Pitt game yesterday...
- Their child had a soccer game
- It was raining
- It was a night game
- The team is not playing well
- The team they are playing is not any good
- Narduzzi not giving the "younger" players a chance
- Peterman sucks
- The students don't go to the games, why should I
- There is no game day atmosphere
- Their defense is horrible
- It costs too much money to park at the games
- The cost of food is too expensive and it doesn't taste very good
- I had to work
- The cost of beer is too expensive
- I live to far away from the game, it takes me over an hour to get to the game
- The people in front of me stand up at times and I can't see the game
- I'm tired of having fans from the opposing team sitting in my section
- Pittsburgh has a lot of sports teams, why spend my money on watching an average college football team
- If Pitt would have beat either Oklahoma State or North Carolina, I'd be there because they be ranked higher
- The traffic going to and from the game is bad
I know that people in Pittsburgh like to think that they are great sports fans, but the reality of it is, they are not. They are quite simply "front-runners". They want to be part of the "excitement" that is going on for a given game. That is why so many people attended the penn state game and so few attended the Marshall game. The next big crowd will be at the Virginia Tech game IF both teams enter the game with at least a 5-2 record.
For me, the only real excuse listed is having to work, the others are a "choice" that we all have to make.
Those who are the "real" fans of the Pitt football team attend games despite all of the above, those who are the "front-runner" fans don't.
For me, if you're a "front-runner" stay home.
Thursday night games are never well attended, so I doubt the VT game will attract a big crowd.

We were sitting right where he went in the endzone, should have been a TD, never stepped OOB, I have no idea what replay was doing. To be that close and hear the shoulder pads and hits , especially from our big white FB was wild

What do I need a medal for? All I did was list the excuses that I heard from people who didn't attend the game last night. A little sensitive aren't we? Did I say something that offended you? Oh wait, I forgot it's 2016 and everyone is offended by everything that any one says.
People need to show up and support the program. It's not that hard.

I find it has proven unwise to suggest that the fans may have some culpability concerning shortcomings within the program. Blame is reserved for Chancellors, ADs, Coaches, Players, and students. The buck stops there for many.

Yeah, I was there but I didn't berate others for choosing not to attend. Judging by some of those attendance and how proud they are of themselves no wonder the atmosphere is so bleak.

Said team has 6 titles in the last 45 years. Pitt struggles to get six wins.

Exactly. And maybe going to the Steelers game is a reason for not attending the Pitt game. Can't go to both, so choose the proven winner.

Why can't u go to both? People go to back to back Pirate games all the time. There are people that do the same with football as well.

Honestly, I did everything short of developing a grand lie to get out of it, but I had to work. It should not happen the rest of the year. I am going to watch the game tonight.

Do you have young kids that you acknowledge as your own? Half kidding, but I do and going to a few games each season is tough enough, let alone 2 games in 1 weekend. I've done it once or maybe twice, but it's definitely the exception. We live out of town as well, but still donate and buy season tickets. But if donating and buying season tickets isn't enough to be a Pitt fan in the eyes of some people, then I guess it's a good thing they're not working in the athletic offices. Pitt has enough trouble getting support without fans eating their own. And like I said earlier, we aren't Penn State, kids are more important than football.

If you have kids or live out of town, then that is one thing. But there are a lot of people that live within an hour drive of Pittsburgh that do not have these same obligations and do attend multiple sporting events.

In honesty, I don't think putting your child's soccer game (or other activity) ahead of Pitt football is a bad thing. My kid comes first.

But everything else sounds like an excuse. Actually turned out to be a perfect night. The majority of the core group will always be there. 30 years of ineptness didn't exactly build a bigger loyal fan base.

I thought the crowd was actually decent , better than most years it would be for a Marshall game. Pitt has pooped on its fans for over 26 years strong now. I told my son, who is now 22, feel like a put him through child abuse as growing him up a Pitt fan. Think about it, if you are 22, and you choose Pitt over Alabama etc, you deserve lots of props! 22 year old have seen mostly all shitty football, their whole lives

Please do not complain then when we do not get a recruit or this program does not move forward.
Ok. Because if I went to Marshall game, we'd have landed any recruit we want. You people over estimate your value to this program. You are probably one of the fans that thinks standing up at the game leads to more victories

No, if a few thousand that use the same excuse as you and want to stay home and watch it on TV show up, it would help. That is the issue, people treat Pitt like a pro sport, not college.

Don't complain then if you do not show up. That is one of the reasons why Pitt misses out on some recruits. There isn't a lot of support like the big time programs.

The incessant crying from Pitt fans about attendance and students leaving early is beyond annoying and borderline pathetic. Find a new topic to cry about, this one is tiresome

It's a big part of why Pitt can't move forward.

And you don't have to respond. Yet you are.

I guess you can just sit at home, cry about recruiting and team success and continue to wonder why.

How bout this one? It's 10 times better watching it on HD at home.

Regarding attendance, to get the good crowds, you need the fair weather fans. To get the fair weather fans, you need to be good, not lose games to unc and osu.

This post should be pinned. I love this, almost weekly, definitely annually we get 20 threads where the posters seem confused that they woke up in Pittsburgh Pa and not Knoxville, TN.

I mean, this is not new. It is what it is. It is not the fans fault. It is partly and mostly the size and configuration of Heinz Field's fault. We all talked about the atmosphere at the OSU game, but it wasn't sold out, and there were only like 50K there. Put 50K in Heinz and it looks empty. I watch a lot of games, and outside of places like the SEC, Michigan and tOSU, there are a lot of empty seats. You usually don't know it that much because the seats aren't a bright yellow, naturally drawing your eyes towards them, or the stadium is around 50K, where a 45K crowd looks pretty full.

No small coincidence that Stanford took its 80,000 seat stadium and renovated it down to 50,000 and the program also took off during this time.

We don't recruit well, we don't have a budget that compares to even half the ACC schools we compete against, not the fans fault.

We have some of the worst presidents, as far as running big time football, including this last one, not the fans fault.

We at one time made it harder for kids to play football at Pitt, not the fans fault

We moved the stadium off campus, where my son said , he forgot something , his ticket , but we couldn't run back to his dorm to get it, no buses, not the fans fault.

We have chosen some of the worst coaches ever, Hackett , Haywood, not the fans fault

I could go on with another 100 reasons it's not the fans fault!

it has nothing to do with pitt not moving forward.. We aren't moving forward because our CBs cant make it two plays without getting beat deep. We have any kind of CBs, we are 5-0, or 4-1, sitting atop the coastal. Like I said, your incessant crying is getting old. Don't worry about what strangers are doing with their Saturday afternoons, you come off as pathetic..

I SAID GOOD DAY

well good, because I will be there Saturday. All high school recruits take notice, Swervin will be in the house on Saturday, cheering loudly. I may even bring pghfan with me, to ensure a great recruiting class..

Wade, hopefully he stays home , I believe our recruiters are not the best more than the fans are at fault. This is a recruit Wanny would have had and we know this.

Duzz came in and blew the interview up, sold himself to Pitt officials , got the job, that's the Duzz I want to see closing these recruits

Make your kid part of Pitt football like I did. I brought the family into my football addiction at a very young age, so we could all get kicked in the groin together, as a family :)

Then you are part of the problem, not solution. Add besides, you'll have plenty of time with the fam as your place of employment may not be financially stable to support you very long.

SMC always ignores his family to go watch other peoples 19 year old kids play sports.

That's idiotic. You are talking about 6 weekends at 5 hours each. Carpool the kids, send the spouse and take a buddy. This sh!t isn't difficult to navigate and has nothing to do with being selfish.
Did you ever think that a person might PREFER to watch their own kid play soccer over a Pitt football game?

So you schedule your kids life around Pitt football? What if your kid wants to play a sport and it conflicts with Pitt football?

no, I've endured a youth soccer game in my time, no one actually prefers this over a college football game. It's done out of guilt, some sort of parental obligation, never out of preference.
