Another former Duke player, Bobby Hurley, has his ASU Sun Devils sporting a stellar 6-8 record (3-5 in conference games). Wasn’t he one of the coaches we as fans coveted before Capel was hired? You will have to forgive me if I forgot; I’m old ...

There are a lot of Ex-Duke players that went onto becoming college head coaches. Have any of them had overwhelming success at the collegiate level?

That was actually his brother who ended up at UConn who is doing a decent job. Obviously started with a lot more talent than KS left here

No. Billy Hurley was the preference of many. A total jackals, but doing well at Uconn.

In fairness, I believe Pitt made as solid of a run at Danny Hurley as they could. I'm guessing UConn was always his pick and he used us as leverage.

My buddy who is plugged in up in Storrs has nothing but rave reviews about Dan. That program was in bad, bad shape when he came in and he’s apparently totally flipped the culture.

I truly do not believe we were intentionally used as leverage. If you’ve spent 5 minutes with Bob Sr., you get a pretty good idea of what that family is all about. As I understand it, we were a victim of bad timing moreso than a pawn in some larger scheme

Wasn’t Steel Curtain absolutely raving about how ASU was going to be the bestest team with the greatest recruits ever?

I'm sure your take could just as well be the case.

Every AD in the country has a list of coaches in their drawer in case their FB or MBB coach leave or get fired and every Coach has a list of schools in their drawer where they’d leave for. As I understand it, Dan’s list had two schools: UConn and Nova. Pitt did everything right in pursuing him, but when a destination job opens at the same time, there’s not much you can do. As I always say, it’s unfortunate it didn’t work out as Dan would’ve been a rock star here. I have zero doubt hed be the most popular coach in town, college or pro.

My uconn fans are thrilled with Hurley so far

People just get twisted up in emotions with these sorts of things. Hurley had a better job offer, which was close to being a dream job for him, and he took it. That doesn't reflect poorly on Pitt. He's a great coach. I don't know him personally, but I feel like a lot of people who are seemingly eager to conflate his attitude with his character would probably not want that standard applied to them. Yeah, he's irritating as a rival fan. Does anybody believe that Jamie Dixon didn't have the same effect on opposing fans? My friends who are UConn fans said the same things about him that people here say about Hurley.

If Hurley had leveraged our job offer into some big money gig at a dead end program, then I'd better understand the notion that we got played, but I'd imagine almost every coach in America would choose UConn over Pitt, given the respective states of our programs at the time. Kevin ****ing Ollie won a natty there for crying out loud.

Correct

Danny Hurley is 156-114 as a HC at RI and UConn. I’d hold off on putting him in the HOF until he proves himself more.

Using overall record at two jobs where he took over teams in a bad spot, especially URI is wildly misleading. Anyone who can win like he did at places like Wagner and Rhode Island where he took over teams that won single digit games in the year prior to his arrival deserves serious praise. From what I understand at UConn, Ollie created quite a mess but Dan refused to immediately run off the guys that the previous staff brought in to accelerate the rebuild. I admire that family a great deal, so stuff like that just speaks to the kind of guy he is.

This x 1000. He takes over places in bad spots and develops a culture. Watch his bench during a game. I sat behind their bench at the A10 tourney and his energy and the energy the bench gives ignites his team. They seem to genuinely care about each other. That’s nearly impossible to do in this day and age.

He’s obviously one of the best coaches in the country at developing a program and anyone who can’t recognize is sour grapes.

You are right but I'm still amazed that in this day and age, kids still sign up to get screamed at. I mean, yea, all coaches yell but the Hurley's have legitimate anger management issues.

Every coach screams at their players in college. Some do it because it’s their personality (Danny Hurley). Some do it because that’s how they’re told you’re supposed to coach (not mentioning names). Kids recognize who is coaching their personality and hurley’s players love him because he is real.

Do you think when Hugley was charged with 3 felonies and he went into Capel’s office he patted him on the head and said it’s ok Jon, you’re in a safe space? Cmon man.

I think people get confused and think the only screamers are the ones they see on tv during games .
Even “mellow” guys like Dixon and Capel no doubt are giving them an earful during practice .
They just want to be more positive in public facing situations

Yep. And even those guys have lost their cool. What was said to make Horton go to the locker room? I’ve never seen someone call his players a c u next Tuesday more than Brad Underwood in practice and that was when he was an assistant. Yet he still gets kids to sign up for him.
