Hey Zeise, Keep your effin mouth shut

Bendel and Greg Linelli (and even Poni) were great during the Pitt basketball heyday. All were huge college basketball fans and in the case of Bendel and Linelli, huge Pitt fans. Those guys were part of the "experience" for me during those great years. Never knew what happened to Bendel and Linelli
I think Greg got a job in another city.
I went to highschool with him.

When we (Pitt) lost Joe we lost the most positive beat writer we ever had. I see him every now and then a couple south side bars. He’s a great guy.
Yeah, I really like Bendel. One time, I think it was after the 2009 Pens Cup parade, we were talking and we went for some beers and sushi and talked Pitt sports the rest of the afternoon.

Agree with the use of the word "experience" during those years. I really looked forward to the BE tourney, not just for the games but Joe would set up in the lobby of the hotel where the team was staying and then have great conversations with guests he had lined up and also peeps who were just walking thru. I remember one time when Slice showed up w a pizza for Joe! He had guests like Mike DeCourcy and Ray Mernagh regularly during the bball season. He did his research and was a good interviewer. I really miss those days!

Yeah ya got to have "schtik" now to be in sports media. Just having passion and knowledge is no longer a concern. And it is a shame because there are so few guys locally that really care or know anything about basketball.

Just listened to cook said “ I can’t remember the last time I watched a college basketball game. Seriously wtf
I recall him saying specifically about 6 years ago, "I stopped paying attention to Pitt bball a few years ago". This was back when we were still getting into the tourney. Granted we were not a very high seed nor highly ranked but still getting into the tourney. Just because Pitt bball and the Pete was no longer THE place to be for all the beautiful people, was enough for him to not pay attention.

Yep. I specifically used that word, thinking about their Big East Tournament coverage. Big East Tournament Week and their coverage from the Pennsylvanian across from MSG was something to look forward to. I really miss those days. I only went to 1 full BET but I went to multiple final games. We literally scheduled around it. Like my wife knew we were going to MSG that weekend for the Final so planned around it. I remember one year she went to Wal Mart Friday night to pick some things up to get ready for the trip. Meanwhile, we were in a dogfight with Louisville. They were up double digits at halftime I think. She gets home and we're about to win and it was like one of those "we had them all along." You just expected Pitt to be playing on Saturday night.

He’s objective. No different than many of us.
And if you're objective there's a lot of bad things all 100% true that you can say about Pitt sports over the years. Only a homer could write all positive stuff.

I heard that today as well. He did add "Shame on me".

Not really a surprise. He follows NFL and NHL closely. The rest he fakes until he makes it so to speak.

Does anyone think that Cook pays any attention to any games other than the ones that he is assigned to write about?
I’d question how often the local guys even pay attention to the games they are assigned ?

i bet 80+% of their article is written before the game
Starts .
It’s why most of the next day game articles are AP pieces

Well since our basketball seats are right behind where the media used to sit at the Pete, I can state for a fact that there were times when media members covering a Pitt game had something different on their laptops that they were watching while the game was going on.

I’ve listened him enough to know that he doesn’t watch much of anything. It’s fair to say he watches the Steelers but not much more than an occasional drive by for everything else…and that includes Pitt, Penguins, penn st and the Pirates.

I don't follow college basketball even remotely as much as I used to. So does this make me a bad person? And here's the thing, I followed it just as much even before Pitt got good. It was really one of my favorite sports, maybe my favorite.

I am not sure totally why, I have chronicled some of the things, obviously our lack of success hurts, but the one and done and not knowing these players from year to year, certain teams just constantly hording recruits because they turn over their rosters almost on a yearly basis. It just isn't as interesting as it was.

I appreciate the NBA and the sheer talent and athleticism, but I always loved the well coached, well executed, different styles of before. Now, it too much emulates the NBA, without NBA talent and analytics makes it too much 3-4 guys standing around the perimeter waiting to get an open 3.

I heard Cook tell the story where ESPN approached him 15-20 years ago to do a pardon the interruption type show with Steven A Smith. I believe the discussions were serious and that was during a time that Cook made appearances on various ESPN shows. Cook made the mistake of telling ESPN that he doesn’t watch the NBA or follow it…and the minute he said that he blew his opportunity. He said it was the biggest mistake of his professional life.

if it were me, I’d take the job and then watch all the NBA I could absorb that very day. I like sports but I just don’t have the bandwidth for more. But pay me six figures and I’ll gladly follow leagues/sports like the NBA, NASCAR, or the German Bundislega. And as far as those panel type shows, you’re paid to express an opinion and you only need a general understanding of things. That describes Cooks understanding of Pittsburgh sports and is why he still drives a value model Chevy Trax (not that there’s anything wrong with that) instead of whatever car Tony Kornheiser or Steven A Smith drives.

And here is the thing, he’s Pitt friendly in a town where most in the media are not. Yet, half the people here don’t like him because even though he has some crazy political takes himself, he exposes all the crazy political takes that they support. And they can’t handle that.

but you’re right, he’s no different than any of us. And he’s likely here reading these threads just like us. But he is more like us than anyone in the media outside Richie Walsh.
His political leanings are mostly opposite of mine, but his takes are hilarious. What he does with memes is tremendous. I love his tweets.

Recruits. Cook is paid to know and follow sports .Of course the PG obviously doesn’t care about anything non Steelers. Say what you will about poni boy but he follows everything . Cook is a lazy alcoholic who spends too much time at jergels

Do you really know what kind of car he drives? :)

Yeah I’m a stalker. Lol. No, actually a local Chevy dealer is the sponsor of his show, and when he does the ad read, he talks about trading in his old Buick last year for a brand new 2021 Chevy Trax.

Well Zeise has a few opinions since Covid that bother people on both sides of the political spectrum. But most of his other tweets are common sense centrist things that normal people and even many people on the left agree with. So if people are bothered by him, they need to check themselves.

now, there’s another local sports personality on twitter that I have a lot in common with politically, that even I had to unfollow because he’s just too out there and too overbearing for me. But that’s not Zeise.

He probably gets a really good deal, so I wouldn't blame him, but even I can drive the Equinox over the Trax, LOL :)

Steigerwald?

Listen, I don't agree with Zeise on many things, but terrible opinions? Why, aren't people allowed to have a different opinion than you? s
See above
He doesn’t have different opinions - he has cliche mad libs
His tales are regurgitating conventional wisdom Spouted by yinzers

He doesn’t follow those closely either -
Based on his writing .
He may casually watch the Steelers and catch some parts of some pens games -
But if you actually think he closely follows anything - you’re fooling yourself .

Is he the Pitt BB beat writer? Is he the college BB expert? Does Pittsburgh have an NBA team? He is paid as a sports writer op/ed on mostly Pittsburgh related topics. Not compete in some sports trivial pursuit game.

Why would you? You'd be watching sports 24/7/365 it would get old.

Why would someone who is paid to write and talk about sports actually watch sports? Gee, I don't know. Some people might think that would help them do their job better. But you are correct, it's been decades since Cook has given a crap about being good at his job, so indeed, why would someone like that actually pay attention to sports?

I disagree with Zeise but i like him. It's unexplainable. I like the guy all grumpy yelling into the air. Sometimes he seems totally unprepared and it makes me laugh. And he's not too political or ridiculous like Steigerwald

But he does a good gambling segment on his show and some interviews with pitt knowledgeable guys.

Yeah. You’re right. It’s how I feel. The umms and ahhhs and umms can certainly be annoying to some, but I find it enjoyable. It’s like his trademark. And it’s different for sure. He’s like the guy on the barstool next to you.

You watch the teams and leagues you personally are assigned to cover.

I don’t think you understand why a columnist differs from
A beat reporter .
I do, but I figure this guy is even older than me, and he's hanging out at his favorite bar every night satisfied with not having a bigger future than he already has.
