Roster says 6-10. Some on this board have claimed he is only 6-8.

I didn't watch the UNC game. Which height did he appear closer to vs UNC's bigs==?

Just curious.

I’d peg him closer to 6-8 than 6-10 based on appearance in the UNC game.

I'm not really sure exactly how tall he is, and to me it really doesn't matter that much if he's 6-8, 6-9, or 6-10, as I don't think the two inches are of much consequence per se. What I do like about him is that he is "wide," which may be more important, and certainly wingspan. And what matters more than that is his mobility and skill regardless of height.

The best example, of course, was DeJuan Blair who was actually 6'5 1/2.

I’ll agree with you for the most part. My immediate observation(s) when seeing him in the game were that he looked shorter than I expected but also that he was Blair/Hugley like wide which I also didn’t expect (alright, I need to correct that, my first reaction was ‘who’s 35, is that Amadasun in the game?’).

I would not normally think the couple inch difference would necessarily make a difference, but it sure looked like it did against the UNC bigs. Of course, at this stage, many other reasons for that then any small height difference.

That was my first reaction too, LOL!

Nas was like 6ft 2in and some change right?

Yeah, but come on. He's only the leading scorer and second leading rebounder in school history. So he clearly doesn't count.
He did get some post points, but @Fsgolfdr is right, Lane, Shorter, Blair were the most effective players I have seen at Pitt in terms of offensive rebounding and scoring in the paint, Id throw chevy Troutman in, too.
Smith did post up some, he wasn't dominant at it, but he also made a lot mid range jumpers and fts.
Aaron Gray or Chris Taft were two taller kids who were effective post players.

There’s no discounting Charles Smiths greatness , I have him as the second best Panther I've personally seen behind Billy Knight . He was a reluctant center who possessed every skill needed to be a great player and had the size the others didn’t and he proved it at Pitt and in the NBA . As great as he was if you needed a rebound or put back basket he’d be the fifth guy out of Blair , Clancy , Lane and Shorter and that’s no knock on CS that’s just how good and tough those other 4 were around the basket .

Agree with this. Billy Knight was the best I have seen and CS 2nd. I thought the same about CS in terms of his inside play but last spring, out of covid boredom, I went back and watched a bunch of games from the CS era and was surprised at how much more physical he was than I ever gave him credit for. He also shot a lot of free throws and his drop step and up and under in the low post was really polished.

He was quite the player . I remember his first game at Pitt , I turned to my wife and said I’d like to be that kids agent !

Jerome took care of the heavy lifting inside , but CS was no pansy inside and he was excellent at blocking and redirecting
shots .

With all the talk about JC leaving after this yr people need to go watch film of CS or BK to appreciate what an NBA player really looks like . As good as Blair and Young were they were second round draft picks and they weren’t anything but journeyman players in the NBA .

While I completely agree with this thought, on the other hand, the NBA is just too lucrative to pass up if you can get there at all, even as a second round journeyman.

Sam Young made 3.3 million dollars in his brief career. Big Fella made 8.7 million.

No doubt , I don’t think anyone should ever delay turning pro if they’re ready . Why play for free while the colleges , coaches and administrators all make serious money from your efforts and you get to attend English lit 101 for free !

Only first round money is usually guaranteed in the NBA so unless you’re a sure fire first rounder I’d stay in school . Getting lost in the D league or living aboard is a fine alternative to actually working a 9-5 job if your out of eligibility or simply weren’t college material to begin with .

When I watch Justin I see a really good and improving college player , I don’t see a first rounder in the draft at this point in time and at his size he needs to improve all aspects of his game . There’s plenty of 6‘-8-10” guys in the NBA they can do everything he does and play better D . My advice to him would be stay in school and work really hard and if I’m ready next yr go .

Agree. and the big thing to keep an eye on with Champ now is how he reacts to all the double teams he is going to get from here on out. Will he begin to get frustrated and press and fall into some really bad habits or does he continue to keep his head on straight and play solid ball no matter what their record is and at the same time continue to improve his D, outside shooting, and handle.

How long and who did Sam play for?
