Recruiting Article How Thomas MacVittie stayed a Pitt commit

I caught up with Thomas MacVittie for a long conversation last night and we talked about everything: Jim Chaney's departure, Pat Narduzzi's role, Matt Canada's hiring and a whole lot more.

Loved this kids highlight tape. Seems to see the field well, has a very strong and accurate arm, and can evade the rush and run some. Its always hard to project QBs from HS to college but I think this kid could be the steal of this years class, not just at PItt but across the country. Looking forward to seeing him develop.

Excellent article Chris. Appreciate the behind the scenes info. Good to hear how Coach Duzz is an appropriately aggressive recruiter.

Will be easy to root for Thomas MacVittie.

Go Pitt.

I like hearing how Canada said they will create a System that plays to Pitt Player's strengths! I recall how Harris, Wannstedt, Graham and Chryst just came in said, this is our System and the Players had to adjust to their System and Learn it instead of creating a System that a adapts to the Players.

Great Coaches show winning right away by doing this, Ferentz, Briles, Mora, Rhule, Kelly, Petrino, Dantonio, and Harbaugh.

Harris came in and put in his West Coast but he was rebuilding the entire Program and only had 60 Scholarships until 2002, so he did what he could and started winning after 3 years?

Wannstedt comes in and wipes out the West Coast and had 3 years of losings, as he took time to bring in his Recruits he needed for his System, and adapt his Players to his Pro Set and he won with it, but took 3 years time!

Graham came in talking all about High Octane, No Huddles, and after all his talk, was not able to adjust the Players he had at Pitt to his Systems, went back to Wannstedt's System, and lost 6 games in those changes and left Pitt?

Chryst comes in and after losing 3 Recruiting Classes due to 4 Coaching changes, pretty much had the cupboard bare, players full of confusion, and then put in his System, and that took time with just 6 to 7 wins, as well as causing losses while ignoring Defense and Special Teams, and then he bolted leaving a 19-20 record?

Finally, last year Narduzzi & Staff just evaluated his Players in Spring Ball with Individual and Units Feats of Strengths to see the limits and skills of his Players.

Come Pre-Season Summer Samp, Stays in the dorm to gets to know them the Players attitudes, motivations, and learn about them as people to adapt them to be his Players.

Narduzzi let Chaney develop the Systems that adapted to Players skills and roster limits and was in every game as they learn growing pains together to execute it, and falling short in Iowa, UNC, and Miami Games. As the Defense was adapting to many changes and could not keep up with ND and Navy Talent and Experience!

Now he has the same idea, Narduzzi wants Canada to develop an Offensive System that adapts to the Players Skills they have and are recruiting. Not forcing a System upon them but now growing in what players can bring to Pitt with their Skills!

This is Good Coaching right now not a Plan later!

Georgia has the #1 QB in the country coming in. I cant imagine MAcvittie would listen.

Also, LSU lost Felipe Franks (to Florida) after being committed for a year. Im sure Canada and PN reminded Macvittie that LSU looks at him as a fallback.

Interesting article that illustrates how hard the coaches work behind the scenes at recruiting and how even minor changes in circumstances can change everything (not suggesting that Chaney's departure was a minor change-but there are other details in the article that give insight into the small stuff that impacts decision making). Interesting stuff. MacVittie sounds firm, which is great. Hopefully he proves to be worth the effort and we get that difference maker a QB that we haven't had since Palko. The coaches certainly seem to think he is.

Well dome article by Chris Peak.

LSU was panicking and going after anyone who could take a snap. Along with MacVittie, they were trying to lure Anthony Russo (the QB from Archbishop Wood who decommitted from Rutgers and chose Temple). There was an article in one of the New Orleans papers about a week ago indicating that those two were their next target.

Cap-we ran the MSU offense under Chaney. We will run the MSU offense under Canada. There will be wrinkles in formations, blocking, etc, but it will be the same thing. Every system is tweaked to adapt to its personnel strengths and weaknesses, so that's no kind of novelty or innovation. It is abundantly clear that there will be no significant changes in our pro-style, shotgun-pistol set scheme, and probably no changes that will be visible to the untrained eye. Hopefully the play calling will improve.

Sure, and agree, Narduzzi hired an OC that has his same attitude and system he wants and you point out makes MSU great! Just glad to hear it? Pitt fans are "Coaching Shy" at Pitt, due to Pederson's Poison?

What I truly like about Coach Pat & Staff is the concentration, devotion, and attention to details on All Three Units, Offense, Defense, and Special Teams! I haven't seen that since 1980s on the same level I saw this year! Good to have a Complete Head Coach that hires other Assistants that Coaches up all 3 Units!
