Hugely out today

Personal reasons. Expect him in the portal at break. My official prediction

Injury or not, its a failure on everyone's part for him to be as bad as he's been. Does Pitt not have a training staff, a nutrionist? What was he doing since last March? Even you didn't think he'd be this bad. A knee injury shouldn't cause you to go from All-ACC to a guy who might not start in the NEC

No, I definitely did not. I’ve always thought he was above average. Just not to the level you shouted from the rooftops. Wonder if this has anything to do with baby momma

Never looked all in from day one to me. For sure not baby whale and loafing after return. Just adds to the debacle.

This staff can’t get out of year 1.

I would assume that "personal reasons" would mean he wouldn't be at the game. Yet, he's sitting on the bench. #Puzzled

Not necessarily. Sometimes people just can’t be reached. Worked with a guy who was pretty smart. But VERY lazy. No matter anyone tried what he always just fell back into his ways. He got away with it for a while because he was smart and capable. And tried to play the game. Eventually it caught up and someone got sick of it and canned him. Long after it should have Halle ed.

You bring a lot of knowledge to this board, but this time I think you are wrong. He’s on the bench, engaging with and cheering for the team.
Is there any chance John asked not to play in games, until he is fit enough to help rather than hurt the team?

Technically wasn’t trying to spit knowledge there, I said prediction ha. This is conjecture based on him
1) obviously having PT diminished
2) he can’t be happy, based on ^ and weight gain etc
3) he has a baby on the way so a move to Cleveland state could be beneficial for NIL and him taking care of the baby.

A fresh start might be exactly what he needs. Maybe he wasn’t ready to take on the responsibility of a kid with being the face of a tournament hopeful team, etc etc.

I work with a lot of kids that have dealt with trauma and his outward appearance is alarming. I would hope they’re checking on him and his mental health constantly because there are signs of future self harm in what he’s going through.

I'm hoping he sticks with it. Coming off an injury and being out of shape makes it hard to be all ACC again. Add the factor that Federiko is playing very well, and John's playing time is bound to diminish.

My hope is that he works hard, stays mentally focused, and becomes an important part of the team again. Certainly, Capel showed him a lot of support during his earlier trouble. It's time to reciprocate.

If Hugley stays and works to overcome this obstacle, I think he'll end up a much better person as well as a basketball player.

I'm pulling for you, John.

Hugley is clearly not as good as Fede and should be on the bench unless and until we are closing out games with a 25+ point lead. And only when it's under 2 minutes to go in the game. The rest of the team is showing how to play team basketball, defend, rebound and share and communicate. He never did that.

I hope Pitt can continue playing defense, rebounding, protecting the ball and sharing it the way they have been doing that recently. It's fun to watch for a change. Maybe that's not really Capel coaching. Maybe Jamie came back and we didn't know it. LOL!

That’s the most compassionate you’ve been towards John. I commend that. He’s definitely had trauma. Probably years of neglect. I’d bet my life on it.

Maybe instead of playing basketball, he should be taking care of himself mentally and physically before it's too late.

Feels like a rabbit hole, but there are a whole collection of stories written in the Cleveland local media when John was in high school about his life and childhood. It certainly doesn’t sound like he had an easy one.

Dad was also in prison his whole life I believe correct?
I think his dad went to prison when he was a younger kid - 7 or 8ish? - and was sentenced to something like 15-20 years. I’m sure John had it tough.

My occupation is studying trauma and inner cities. I wouldn’t assume that he has had trauma and mental health issues due to growing up in an inner city. Or if his father is in jail. More likely but everyone reacts differently. It didn’t seem to hurt him his first two years at Pitt. But a lot of guesses are being thrown out in this thread. We should probably stop guessing.

That seems to be a common thing around here...a lot of guessing.

John is struggling physically, and probably mentally. Fede has been a godsend and is dramatically better than anyone was expecting. still, I looked at some video of John last year, and he was really good. I hope he gets his act together, stays at Pitt and works his tail off and gets a degree and has a great life. Capel is handling him as well as possible, I think. If John leaves the team, Pitt will be fine. I hope for his sake, he stays engaged with the team. I think the twins can provide some good time at the post, backing up Fede, if John is not here.

The one thing that has made John special and most likely has kept him out of trouble ( given his background ) is excelling at bb . Unfortunately he’s been injured and it’s taken away the thing in his life he probably cares more about than anything else ( exclusive of family ) . Why would anyone not understand if he’s having a difficult time dealing with this . He needs to get his knee healthy and get back in shape and he’ll return to one of the best big men in college hoops even if someone else doesn’t think so ..not mentioning anyones name . If it happens this season great , but if this is just a wasted yr for him he needs to know that Panther fans have his back . Why old fat white guys who couldn’t ever play any sport at this level want to knock a kid whose playing injured is beyond me .
