Hughley Statement ....

Fighting for a tourney bid and he doesn’t want to play…

I don’t get it. Especially the timing of his last game preserving a redshirt year.

Academically next year he’ll be a senior and it feels like he hardly played.

I’m sure he wants to play. For whatever reason he is just not able to at this point.

He’s young and hopefully has a long life ahead of him. And it needs to be addressed. I know I’ve said this before but I’ve seen it up close in my family. Even what may seem to be mild anxiety can fu** with your life pretty bad. Here’s hoping he responds well to however it’s treated. I’m sure people on this board will have varying opinions but fu** hoops for now as far as he’s concerned. Get well.

Look. There should be way more important things in life than basketball, both for John and for our fans. I sincerely hope he gets well.

That said, I do have a bit of an issue when I read things about how our top flight volleyball program can't fully fund teamwide scholarships (I know this isn't exclusive to Pitt), yet our athletic department has to pay the bills for three years for a guy that's barely played because of legal, mental, and many could argue, self-inflicted physical issues. I respect Capel for standing by this kid, but in the end, it may cost him his job.

I think some people just claim mental issues as an excuse to be coddled. Mental health is a very serious issue. It appears to be used quite a bit as a guise nowadays. Is John struggling because of real mental health issues, or is he just extremely frustrated that his performance has fallen off so greatly after injury? Instead of working hard on his fitness to regain his form, is he using 'mental health' as a crutch? Hard to say, but I'm skeptical. Feels like 'mental health issues' is becoming a buzz phrase for some that are afraid to face difficult life challenges and adversity that arise for all of us.

You're seeing it across the sports world, but these college guys want to be paid, so on top of the academic benefits, it really is now a professional endeavor. I don't agree with being able to simply claim mental health issues with there seemingly being no tangible repercussions. Whether you're a Pitt player, a coaches son on Iowa, Ben Simmons, etc. If you need a mental break, fine. But you should lose certain benefits during that time: financial or otherwise.

Those of us working hard every day to pay the bills generally don't get extensive paid time off for mental fatigue, as much as we may want or need it. And maybe that's a problem in this country or this world, but until it applies to all of us, I struggle with athletes, who have access to world-class treatments and finances that most of us could only dream of, solely receiving this benefit.

Injust hope he remains on scholarship and is able to provide his moral support by sittimg on the bench to provide support to his teammates

Some people here don’t want him to do what’s best for him, so he can underperform and give them more material.

We don’t know what he is dealing with. But just like y’all have options as to how to manage your personal life, so should he.

Hoping he comes back strong next year.

I don't think he was patting himself on the back just was sharing some inside info.
I'll go a step further and been hearing Dior and John probably won't be on the roster next year.

I think at this point, that is pretty much a given. Hugley has to take care of his mental health issues and that may last into next year, probably longer. No one ever expected Johnson to be on this team next year, at least not many of us. Capel made mistakes with these 2. Hugley is unfortunate. Johnson is a mess and needs to be gone.

Sensed he was never all in here from day one. Assumed it was Pitt or Capel but guess it was bb in general. Hope it works out.

I don’t look at Hugely as a mistake - recruiting wise or how he was dealt with.

Injuries and personal stuff happens. Hope we haven’t seen last of him.

How can you tell the degree to which he is or isn’t “all in”?

He was a damn good player last year. He got hurt. He has other personal shit that is perhaps serious.

It is what it is - but has nothing to do with the degree to which he wants to play.

Yeah I pointed out about a month ago it had all the earmarks of mental health issues and hoped for his recovery.

I was making fun of SMF’s insane notion that he failed a drug test and this was how they were covering it up. Which was way worse

Wow. I’m shocked it’s mental health as I said a month ago and not a double secret probation suspension like SMFAlexJones said. SHOCKED
If I played basketball at Pitt and read this message board the past few years, I’d have some significant mental illness also. These guys are still student athletes with a ton of stress and a ton of high expectations from fans coaches and self. Mental health issues in D1 athletes is far greater than you think. Very heavy on the women’s side, but it is there for sure. And it involves everything from eating disorders, depression, anxiety, stress induced ailments, and on and on. I know a psychologist that works with a very high level D1 SEC athletic department. Said she never has an empty office. Always working with athletes to work through many issues. Some can do it and some can’t.

That's really the attitude everyone should have now. I hope that John works everything out mentally and emotionally. That's so much more important than a basketball game.

If everything goes right, we will see John competing next year. Regardless, he's still a Pitt man, and I wish him well.

Would you say that a player with a torn ACL "doesn't want to play"? If not, why do you say that when the issue is mental health?

I don't know what the full extent of John's issues are, but getting better is far more important for John than entertaining us.

Step 3: find the right combination of treatments to bring yourself back into balance mentally, physically and spiritually.

Some of the postings says a lot about some of us that it does about Hughley.
Some of us care more about him playing and Pitt basketball than we care about his mental health and life.
