Cole Matthews and Luke Kemmerer are going to be wrestling at the Scuffle on their own. Ony two Panthers I saw listed.

Good to see they are going to be there.

Related question: Why does it seem that Pitt underwrestles compared to other teams? Others seem to make a habit of being involved in a few tournaments and some tri and quad meets but Pitt seems to have a more bare bones schedule. Is this a Keith Gavin thing or something else? I would think that more high quality matches would better prepare the squad for ACC and National tournaments.

Only allowed some many competition days in season so you have to make some decisions with the schedule.

Understandable, but the lack of single day or weekend tri and quads is interesting. If it were me, Id schedule more of those and tourneys instead of a bunch of duals.

Kemmerer and Mathews ARE at the scuffle wrestling un-attached.

Earlier, they held Kemmerer back a little bit because of a knee injury

Mathews won his first match 10-0 over Brock Herring from Lehigh. He looked terrible in his second match against a kid from Ohio U. He was losing 6-1 and getting twisted like a pretzel when he pulled out some kind of junior high reversal and horsed him over and pinned him with 9 seconds left. He looked like he had too much New Years. Just standing around and looking - no pressure applied to his opponent at all.

Kemmerer got pinned after being dominated 13-1 by one of the Finesilvers from Duke. He got a forfeit from a guy from N Colorado and then won 6-3 over Matzke from Edinboro.

A few things
These two when out there on their on dime
No New Years fun they were training New Year’s Eve
Your comment implies they were partying

That high school move got a pin against a 2 time national qualifier who had s 25-7 season last year
Not bad

I agree Cole looked tired against lee but lee had a great pace
I just not sure why this was so negative in regard to two freshman who r trying to get better

Def. not too much New years^”friend”, Cole is doing all the right things in and out of the wrestling room & the Ohio kid is a senior, seasoned wrestler, been to Nationals You should give Cole a little credit. I think his redshirt freshman year is off to a fine start just like rest of the team.

At the Scuffle, I believe PSU has 10 wrestlers in the Semis. They don’t have one at 125 but have 2 Hwts. And, Oklahoma State has 8.

The three top 6 teams that are there are those two and NC State. I didn’t notice how they are doing.

Looks like Matthews is assured of at least 8th place. Lost to Lee of PSU 11-3 then won his consolation match 2-1. Next is a consi of 4 match against someone from UTC. Possible rematch against Kelly from Ohio in the next round.

No, not negative at all. I'm a fan. Cole is going to be (is right now) very good and he is just getting started. I keep forgetting sarcasm/tongue in cheek doesn't translate well in text.

I always thought Coles pace was slow and methodical and that he will really take the jump to the next level when he learns to push his pace and put more pressure on his opponents. Against the kid from Ohio U, he just appeared to be exceptionally tired and not his normal self. I actually thought he looked better against Lee than the Ohio U kid.

Anybody know why they had to pay their own way?? That's a bit concerning.

Because they are redshirting. They cannot represent their school and take money for the tourney and still redshirt. Notice they did not wear Pitt uniforms.

They went unattached, which means independent of University. So they pay...for it all. Glad you corrected that...partying among Pitt wrestlers is a sensitive subject lol

Is there any other funding mechanism to help pay for these kids to compete unattached? Can funding go through the RTC or some other club? It seems wrong to make these kids pay their own way to compete, especially while they compete against other kids who are supported by their team at the same event.

Where's that Bagman we all hear about for every other school but Pitt. Koo Koo Kee Choo

On another topic, I saw that Marstellar was there and wrestling for Lock Haven. He made it to the finals, where he lost by a point to the PSU wrestler. Glad to see that he is back in the sport.

He has been back. Placed at NCAA’s last year. Has come a long way back.

Unfortunately appears no video feed of OK match Sunday. I need my grappling fix. Have to admit that’s the only thing I watch on the Big Ten Network
