I find the outcome of today's game to be about what I expected for the first game of the season.
You guys have to remember that Youngstown State is a very good NCAA D-I FCS program, with a veteran college football coach in Bo Pelini. They were not going to let Pitt embarrass them on the football field today.
Add to that, the Pitt football team was playing its first game of the year with several new players, at key positions and a new OC...this was not going to be an easy win today.
Past history will tell you that Pat Narduzzi was going to be extremely conservative with the offensive play calling today and it was just that. Browne threw 24 times and completed 17 of them. A large majority of those passes were of the "safe" variety, most less then 15 yards down the field. In fact, their top WR had only one catch for the game.
Not saying that Pitt will beat psu next week, but I am saying that Pitt will not get blown out in that game next week. Much the same way that Bo Pelini wasn't going to let Pitt embarrass them today, Pat Narduzzi will not let psu embarrass his team next Saturday.
I expect to see a much different Pitt offense then we saw today with Max Browne throwing the ball more and the Pitt running game being used less.
psu has a good offense and I expect them to put at least 31 points on the scoreboard, the question is can Pitt put up more?

Considering I can't make a difference, I think I'll go along with your idea until the game is played. My blood pressure will thank me.

While I tend to agree with you that YSU is a pretty decent team and that we weren't going to show much, I'm still concerned that this will be a rough year.

YSU lost a lot of talent and won't be nearly as good as they were last year. Not an excuse to be blown off the line on both sides the entire 2nd half.

There's no exuse for what took place on that field in the second half other than Pitt is not very good.

There needs to be a monumental improvement just to keep from getting blown out of Beaver Stadium next week.

Next 2 weeks will be rough - still have a hard time understanding why Pederson scheduled 2 losses vs the other OSU that probably sells you less/equal tickets than a MAC team

Plus even if slight increase for OSU game - rest of year attendance is hurt because you're 1-2 heading to Atlanta

"no excuse"? I beg to differ. We can actually use the following excuses because they seem to be used regardless of prior events:
1. Sanctions! sanctions! sanctions!
2. It's the media's narrative, it didnt actually happen
3. Our BOT wants Narduzzi out
4. We're young
5. It's a fluke
6. it's all that darn Sarah Ganim's fault

Interesting. Our trustees recruit for CPN? That we're young is whose fault? I know you're making fun of PSU...and it is funny...but right now I'm hoping CPN can make something workable of our dumpster fire of a roster.

The line is now up to Pitt +21, am I missing something?
Trying to be as objective as possible, but I don't see anything near that happening.
psu is no way hear as good as Clemson was last year and Pat Narduzzi got his team up for that game. I have complete faith in his ability to keep Pitt in this game and allow his team a chance to win it in the 4th quarter.
He's done it before, who's to say that he can't do it again?

The line is based on bettors. Apparently the bettors love the Nits in a blow-out.

"Past history"? Is there any other kind?
YSU is good and well coached. If you are going to take down a team ahead of you on the charts, game 1 is the game.
Good post.
YSU is not good. They are FCS and won't be a top FCS team this year.

Does it ultimately matter? Does it impact the season or the outcome of the next game? The next two games will tell us a lot more about how competitive the Panthers will be on a top 30 basis. But ultimately, what matters is how Pitt plays in the ACC. Nobody with a lick of sanity was predicting Pitt was going to have a top 20 type team this year. Pitt has one win. Let's focus on the next game at hand. Hail to Pitt!

I don't agree that they won't be a top FCS team. They seemed to have some talent
I guess it is relative. They were a top FCS team last year and lost significant talent. They may end up being the top FCS team, but that still wouldn't make them a good team in comparison to us in the FBS. So, sure, I will even concede they are the best of the best in FCS. That makes them about the #100+ (at absolute best) team in FBS.

Well, because people are explaining away the embarrassing performance as saying it was against "a good team" which is just false. If it doesn't matter, why did he need to qualify. Don't ask me. Ask the guy making excuses for the poor performance.

Another possible factor. In these kind of games, loyalists come out more, and bet their hearts. They have a lot more fans and they're understandably cocky about the outcome. So some are likely putting action on the game who normally don't bet. That actually may have happened on the Pitt side last year. The line seemed out of whack in our favor.

Flip side, doubtful many Pitt fans are putting money on Pitt this year, based on the pessimism I sense. Pitt fans may be adding to the line by putting action on PSU! Ones I associate with are VERY pragmatic that way. One guy always bets against us when we play Miami at home... and cleans up.

Might be smarter to wait till the 2017 season ends and look back and judge. Some times teams over the course of the season prove to be tougher or easier than at first blush. Regardless, Pitt won and advances...ultimately does not matter whether Youngstown is great or sucks. Hail to Pitt!

YSU is still a FCS opponent. Now with that said, they are far superior to say an Akron. YSU will likely have twice if not more wins than Akron does this year and would probably beat Akron by 30 pts. That MAC is god awful these days. YSU probably has more players with P5 offers than Akron, given transfers.

But as I first said, YSU is still an FCS school. A good FCS one, but still FCS.

Definitely not.

Definitely not.

They were 5-7 in the MAC last season and have a worse team this year. Akron lost to 2-12 Buffalo by 41-20. Buffalo lost to FCS Albany (which finished only 7-4 in the CAA).

YSU was 12-4. YSU was in the FCS Championship Game.

Put it this way, there are more starters from YSU that would play on a combined team than Akron would provide. MAC has some of the worst football in the country today. The fact that Penn State scheduled them should also tell you how weak Akron is.
