I think James makes that last shot

if Young doesn't run into him - what was he doing just running around aimlessly? James made a great move to the hoop. Yeah he missed 9 straight shots but that was the kind of shot he can and has made. Hate to see his career end that way.

Based on the 9 previous misses.... 2 of them airballs and most of them wide-open 12-foot (or closer) looks..... I think the likelihood of him making that shot is very low.

I'm appreciate his effort for four year... he never took a game off as far as effort goes.

But it shouldn't have even come down to that last possession. Pitt had so many opportunities to win this game easily... win going away, without much stress.

But Pitt is a dumb team. And they're coach coached dumb today too.

No way he makes that shot. He attempted 4 other drives to the hoop and never came close to making a simple layup. Also, where was Robinson's court awareness. He is suppose to see the floor. With 9 seconds left why did he have to try to force the play. After 4 years you would think Robinson would finally understand he was not going to blow by anyone--even slow white Wisky defenders.
By the way--Young should not have run in his path. Typical of that overrated loser

Robinson missed a wide open, wide open, shot from the foul line that would have put us up 3 late. Huge miss.

Yeah ... it is what it is ...

But if Young hadn't run into him he actually had a clean shot from two feet out. Despite how badly he had shot in the second half I still like his chances on that shot. Wisconsin played horrible defense. It's just mind boggling that Mike could go there when he saw James going to the hoop. I can honestly say I've never seen that happen in all my years of watching basketball, and that's a lot of years.

I've already watched that play about 12 times/

Really can't blame Mike there either. He was just running down into the lane and James turned into him.

Like others have said -- if just one or two of his early misses goes in -- it's a different game.

I just can't really blame Mike there. James really kinda dribbled into him.

Artis was WIDE open on the wing, 10 feet from the hoop. nobody within 10 feet of him.

I haven't watched it twelve times so I will defer to you on that.

But I would think that when you see your PG dribbling straight down the court and meeting little resistance you would slow down a little to see what he's going to do. he would still have had time to get in position for a rebound if he had let the play happen in front of him rather than just charging into the lane.

you hit the nail on the head they are just a dumb sloppy team. When they need a good posession they make a turnover, when they need a big shot to extend the lead they miss it. Just always seems like Pitt is always a step behind and can never get out of its own way.

He was dribbling down the right hand side of the court, and then turned into the lane at the foul line.

I agree...I thought the same especially after seeing the replay.

James should have given it up to Jeter on the layup he missed earlier.

He was right to drive when he did, that's tough luck.

James being utterly stone cold for 3/4 of the game was the difference, not that one shot.

Yes, James was on the right side of the court, but he made a good crossover move to the middle of the lane to get a wide open shot, but Mike was not under control or not paying attention and ran right into him. Also when Pitt led by one Mike stayed in the lane on defense and didn't follow Vito Brown out to the top of the key and let him shoot a wide open lead that put them in the lead for good.

Another hallmark of the Dixon era... Horrendous execution with the clock running down. Disorganization always.

I'd rather crucify Mike Young for two sloppy azz turnovers on the right wing midway through the half. Those also may have cost Pitt the game because that was where ALL momentum was lost. I was apopleptic.

Completely agree with the second part.

As for the first part, maybe we can say it was 50-50 on both of them.

Like I said, I watched the play 12 times, and I just can't put the blame solely on Mike.

There were so many other shots that James could have / should have hit, unfortunately.

Here's why I blame Mike: James Robinson has never made a pass on a fast break in four years. I'm hardly exaggerating when I say that. No one in the history of basketball has messed up more two on one breaks because he refuses to make the pass when the defender commits. He ALWAYS shoots. Mike Young should have known that. They're both mental midgets.

Just watched it again multiple times and I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment.

James turned toward the hoop at the three point line. Mike was to his left a step or two behind the three point line and looking right at him. When he saw James go behind his back Mike could/should have have slowed down, but he went right to the basket which was right in James path. In that situation you almost always go to the hoop so you have a chance to draw a foul if you miss. Everyone should know that.

I know it's a split second situation but it's when you need a feel for the game and I think that's something that's sorely lacking on this team.

Fair enough.

We'll completely agree on the notion that the feel for each other and the game was sorely lacking on this team.

I can't blame Young on that play primarily because he was hustling either to get in position for a pass or a rebound. I could maybe say they were both rushing more than they needed to but, mostly, it was just dumb luck they ended up running into each other.

My question is why on earth was the game in James' hand when he hadn't hit a shot all night? Artis made a key 3 late and should have been the focal point down the stretch. It's like during the breaks Dixon kept telling his team to give it to James and let him keep shooting. I don't get it.

Sometimes you just have an off night and after the airballs, missed FT, easy bunnies and wide open 3's I think as a coach you need to tell your players to get someone else to shoot the damn ball.

I totally get what young was doing. As noted to get his look jrob spun into the middle of the lane, prior to that he.had been driving to the right. Young clearly was crashing for the o board, and as most note, a VERY likely obaord given how jrob had been shooting.

Just a very appropriate reprentation of this team, that the potential game winner gets derailed by their two most experienced players running into one another.

The only James that would make that shot would be lebron James. Robinson couldn't catch a cold last night and the 20 some games prior.

I see what DT means by watching a broader view of the play on Dk's web site. Mike was essentially running straight down the court and was seemingly pushed a little at the end which accelerated his momentum into James. Also there was nobody open although it was also clear James had made up his mind he was going to the hoop. It was hard not imagine what other PGs might have done. I can see Knight and Fields taking their patented step back jumpers once the defensive man was off balance and likely making them. As for Carl (or Karl :), who knows but he would have likely accelerated towards the hoop and beaten Young to the spot or glanced off of him causing havoc and perhaps a foul call.

Maybe in the end, it was just an unfortunate sequence of events and the curse of Goheen that will forever plague Pitt in the NCAA tournament. You won't find two classier people on the planet than James and Jamie and it's a sad end to the former's career at Pitt and as for Jamie, one wonders if for his sake, a change of venue might not reinvigorate his coaching career.

There was a time not long ago when I was positive Jamie would be in a final four and my only question was if it would be as Pitt's coach. Now I am starting to believe the ONLY way he gets into a final 4 is to leave Pitt for his own sake because he has clearly plateaued here.

As for Pitt, it seems like the Gil miss 5 years ago was the end of an era that we didn't see coming. 2002-2011 will go down as the Golden decade of Pitt basketball. I always realized that this wasn't go to last forever but it was hard to see this coming that after getting a Number 1 Seed in 2011, the next 5 years would produce a solitary NCAA victory.
