Ideal Class

Collier, Davis, Hugley, Omoruyi,
Timberlake

I only think they will take four, and then grab a fifth if / when X leaves. (such as a 5th year senior).

I don't think it wise to dream beyond Davis, Hugley, Collier and Timberlake. And I'd put the chances at Timberlake no more than 20%.

Davis, Hugley and Collier and the best available (Dowuona?) would still be a tremendous haul!!

Sounds right given recruiting class math (see below) showing a maximum of 4 open ships (3 after Collier) unless Johnson goes pro early to create #5:

Players on ship and who could be gone after this season depending on circumstances--

(1) Hamilton -- Grad transfer--Definitely gone.
(2) Johnson -- Could leave if pros call.
(3) McGowens
(4) Horton
(5) Drumgoole
(6) Toney
(7) Champagnie
(8) Coulibaly
(9) Chukwuka -- Senior -- Graduates and/or grad transfers.
(10) Brown
(11) George -- Junior but could definitely graduate early and possibly transfer
(12) Murphy
(13) OPEN SHIP

I’d prefer Hugley and a Juco or Grad Transfer Big to go along with Davis and Collier.

That would be one incredible haul. I'm not so sure that Johnson will leave this
year. If he doesn't we now have two open scholarships ( if my numbers are
right). I gotta believe that George will graduate and leave, giving us another.
IMO Davis is the #1 priority with a Big #2 (Hugley).

I think Capel is selling the family and the vision and these guys like to play with talent -- you figure - RJ/Hugley/Timberlake/Collier could be on the floor together for 1-2 years at least...... This is going to be the launching point for the rebirth. Hugley commits this weekend. Then hoping Caleb Love commits to UNC and RJ cancels visit to UNC and commits to us.

Timberlake is said to be leaning to Providence. UNC seemed to be the only other threat to us but he seems to be behind Bryce Thompson and Cade Cunningham on there board and UNC's class is filling up fast they have 1 spot left but then Anthony and Bacot may both be one and done so they may have up to 3 spots left. - Love/Dickinson/Todd/Thompson are all higher on their boards than either Davis or Timberlake. Plus Capel seems to like guys with chips on their shoulders and Timberlake/Davis are both borderline 5 stars or 5 stars that may want to show UNC and other ACC schools they should have been recruited harder.

Anywhere any other coaches show up for Hugley there's going to be a Pitt asst. or JC himself will be there. He's not letting Wv, GT or Miami be alone with him to long

FWIW, ESPN has a new mock draft up today based on what has gone on this summer. They have Johnson in the draft as the 46th pick.
So if you were X and the consensus was mid to lower half 2nd round what would you do, go or stay one more year? Fairly large difference in $ between that and somewhere up in the first round. Tough decision, comes down to how much you think you could improve your position staying one more year.

Only first round contracts are guaranteed , I believe . If he’s improving , but still a second rounder you stay .

I’m not sure how anyone can accurately speculate on how X progresses this year . He was a huge surprise last season , if he improves as one one would hope he won’t be the 46th pick . I hope he kills it and becomes a first rounder and Pitt signs RJ who then takes over the point .

Aside from the basketball issues, once in awhile things like wanting to actually
remain a college student and that type of life also come into play.
On the other hand, financial hardship of the player and his family is a
determining factor.
As for your question....I personally would try to gather as much info from
coaches, and people in the know (NBA types) etc. Players like this usually
have some off season experience, even if it's just pickup type games with
pros. That also gives you an idea (if you're being objective) as to how
ready you actually are.
Of course I'm old fashioned and I believe in the value of a college degree.
Get your degree in three years, max credits in the summer, and start
grad school in the fourth year .However I see that method more with football
players than with Bball players, and for many it's rather unrealistic.
Just my take on it.

Don't forget he could also opt for overseas if he wants to start making money and isn't guaranteed making the NBA right away.

First round picks are guaranteed. But second round picks can be. Look no further than our own DeJaun Blair. I don’t follow it closely enough to know frequency but guaranteed isn’t out of the question. I suspect the higher in the second round the higher the chances for a guarantee.

If X can shoot 3's this year at a 32 - 37% clip and cut down on his turnovers which should be hard as long as Hamilton/Coulibay/ Brown can catch and finish better than Brown and Chukwuka last year. He could play himself into a late first round pick with his speed and athleticism.

basketball is different when it comes to the draft, teams will draft players who arent ready cause they can stash them, and freshman can get drafted so a lot of teams will draft freshman to stash them,if he has a chance to get drafted of what spot he should take it, he will learn more from the D league than in college

If Johnson improves his shooting and cuts down on his TO's, he's a 1st Rounder. Reminds me of Trey Burke. If he doesn't improve much from last year, I think mid 2nd Round sounds about right but he still would probably leave. Plenty of guys leave and dont even get drafted.
