And Lyke does not fire Capel,

It will be like Capel treating the double digit, season and home opening loss to The Citadel as “just another game”.

It would speak volumes. I doubt she could long survive.

But........
What about the buyout?
What about the way the team played in that 3 game stretch?
What about how they overcame the injuries, the police blotter?
What if he leaves and whole roster follows him?

Come on He SHOULD be back, according to some people.

Many sane individuals think he should be gone, but it isn't our money

Money should not be an issue or we’re in trouble. What is the point of the ACC check if it doesn’t afford the opportunity to fix a mistake? That’s what money does in sports. The Pirates have no margin for error due to money but the Yankees/Dodgers can buy themselves out of their mistakes because of their resources. Pretty facilities with bells and whistles are great, but the first priority needs to be fixing one of your two cash cow programs that is hitting rock bottom.

I appreciate that Capel has gotten this team to punch above it’s weight class on occasion in his tenure. The FSU game in year 1, being a thorn to UNC, beating Duke. He’s gotten some really exceptional performances from his teams and that’s great, but the totality of those wins doesn’t come close to erasing the failures on the court, off court issues, and recruiting woes. It has to be time to move on.

He’s gonna get another year and every time we win a singular game or Horton gets hot the joey David’s and wannstache’s of the world will beat their chests until the next predictable skid. We might as well just face it and abandon the Pete next year. Eyes to the 23 coaching search

Yep. If he returns his key players, there is a 100% chance he is back. The buyout is too large and Heather can pray for a Miami or Wake before she has to admit her mistake in March 2023.

Meaning if she decides to make this move, she better not mess it up because her ass is on the line
I thought their was someone forcing her to keep Capel. I think she has the stones to make a big move like this but not sure she will this year.

Honestly at this point it is riskier keeping him for her job security.

There is no one at the Pete.

People are chanting Fire Capel at the games.

What is next year going to look like after we go all in on the transfer portal and lose 3-4 guys from the current team.

I think this may be the largest exodus in the off-season we have seen via all channels:

Gueye/Onye via graduation
Max/Payton/Oladapo -- I think 2 of 3 may leave -- why sit the bench for a bad team
Santos/Collier - I think will stick
Burton / Horton they are both sort of stuck here
Hugley / Femi / Jeffress - I think 1 of these 3 will leave for sure and there is a chance for 2 or more

So we could start the year with Hugley/Jeffress/Burton/Horton/Collier/Santos and need to max fill up to 7 spots.

Not sure how you let this guy have a third rebuild.

That's what I've been saying and its why she cant fire him to hire Pittjas's lottery ticket. Those guys fail more than succeed and she won't get a 3rd attempt at hiring a basketball coach. She really really needs Capel to work out and really really has to pray for a Miami or Wake. I mean those were the 2 worst teams in the conference last year and both are going to the NCAAT. It is very easy for Heather to look at them and think a few more pieces and we're them.

No one is buying tickets for a MM lottery ticket hire so attendance is a moot point. The team will be picked dead last. There will be no excitement or buzz because we hired whoever wins the CAA Tournament.

As for transfers, of course a lot will transfer. But the only ones who matter are:

Hugley
Horton
Femi
Burton
Sibande

Everyone else is easily replaceable and upgradeable in the portal

Do you buy season tickets? I am guessing based on your historical comments - No.

I would 100% renew without question if we hired a new coach for next season. Not even a doubt in my mind. So for you to say people wouldn't buy tickets as usual you are wrong.

There would be hope. This program right now is depressing and has no vision and no future and coach who either doesn't know how to coach and lead young men or doesn't want to do it here. Either way he needs to go.

I think you’re way off base if you think the coaching situation will have no impact on ticket buying. It will impact it one way or the other, whether he stays or goes.

Oh what happened ? I thought after the UNC game Capel was staying ?
Never seen such a see saw opinion in my life .

My choice is to show him the door immediately.
No see - saw for me.

I think it was more acceptance that he will be back after UNC and if that is how the team plays willingness of people to give him one last shot. I want a change but more than that I just want the program to be successful again whoever is the HC.

A no-name coach, 12 transfers, and a team picked 15th isnt selling any tickets. Pitt basketball is dead. No one is coming back until we start winning

I gave them up this year. I will buy them next year if we hire a guarantee.

There was sooo much more momentum and energy inside the Pete in Capel Year 1 and 2 compared to this year.

New coaches bring a new energy both with fans and with recruits.

That's fantastic. They'll watch it on TV until the team gets good. Who's going to say "Woah, we hired Jim Smith from Albany, here's $2000 for me and my son to go watch a team picked dead last." Maybe 3 people.

That group finishes 12th or 13th in the league.

Honestly, really only Hugley matters. He needs to replace everyone else and go for broke. When you have below average players at 4 of 5 spots, you aren’t all of a sudden going to get good because they come back, or get older.

Femi and Burton, and Nike, and Horton are certainly “ACC” level players. But they are all sort of below replacement level ACC players. They just aren’t very good. They aren’t disasters which I guess was the fear when we were worried about going 0-20, but they aren’t upper level players, they certainly don’t have a good coach leading them, and, with 100% certainty, they aren’t all coming back.

They may finish 12th or 13th but that's higher than what the MM coach will finish. We'll finish 12th next year, save 1 year of buyout money and have an 8 year old throw a dart against the wall to pick the MM coach in March 2023.

I don’t know why you can’t get this into your head.

Nobody is really buying season tickets next year if Capel is back OR say Medved is the coach. More would probably keep them if we have a new coach, but not many new season tickets are being sold.

BUT, with the new coach, you have a real shot at getting some momentum next year going into the 23-24 season.

Keeping Capel means a bunch of people give up their season tickets, then 23-24 is Year 1 of the next tenure so you sell no new tickets AGAIN, and you’re not looking at a chance at real success until 24-25.

This isn’t rocket science. Stop playing dumb.

Delaying the chance to be good by a whole year likely costs us a few million when you consider lack of ticket sales, donations, merch, concessions, etc. which is why the buyout argument is stupid. We’ll only save $2-3 mil firing him next year instead of this. Which is peanuts and you make that money back in the long run if you get the next coach right.

It’s more about HL feeling some type of loyalty towards her hire…. Which is complete BS.

Ok, but if the buyout is X, and you still have to pay him salary + buyout Y after 2022-23, the math isn’t that far apart.

I also don’t think it’s a given that 1) we go the midmajor route, and 2) that all midmajor coaches are lottery tickets.

I think he’s gone

Lol I LOVE when you talk in absolutes like this. I’m sooooooo confident a new MM coach could come in and Year 1 not lose to UMBC, Citadel, and Monmouth.

And likely win 4-6 games in conference too. Just like Capel would.

The toughest piece in this roster to fill is Gueye who’s leaving anyways. Hugley is solid but not a program changer and every other player is literally replacement level.

The new coach can just piece together a bunch of random portal pieces which will be the same result as what Capel throws out there.

Iowa St is 28 in KenPom in Year 1 of a new coach. Penn St is 85 and having a season similar to us in Year 1.

Your Doomsday scenario of next year with a new coach is dumb.

Yes. But that is just more slots for this great incoming recruiting class.

Okay. But then we’d be in the exact same spot next year when we fire Capel. So what’s your point? Any coach Pitt hires is going to be a lottery pick.

Been pointed out many times. He doesn’t realize it’s kicking the can down the road. And 1 more year sets things back likely effectively more than just another year.

I think he will be back. But he shouldn't. I said this back in January and probably ad nauseum. Why bring him back? Yeah money, but at what cost?

I truly believe with all that has transpired off the court along with on the court results, the fact that we have signed exactly ONE high school recruit now for two years, there is serious breach of contract stuff that should be able to mitigate and negotiate the buyout down significantly.

I can't believe that above paragraph is not true and doable. I don't think we can afford another year like this, and another year where no one is being recruited. How is he getting away with this? Isn't that part of his job??

Again, basic match. When season 4 < season 1, and seasons 2 and 3 weren't good, and season 5 looks no better than season 4???? It's over. There is nothing to wait for.

Keeping Capel is not going to keep these players. And these players who is really worth keeping?

Femi is gone. I imagine Jeffress is gone. I can't imagine Hugley will return and he will be in demand. Burton and Horton are meh. Collier doesn't look like he is a long term answer. Santos is Duquesne level? Payton, Oladipo and Amundsen cannot even get on the court.

No recruits. Who is going to transfer here. I mean this is worse than the Williard years. AND yes, it is worse than Stallings.

I was with you right up until "worse than Stallings". He was the absolute worst.

The question hanging over all of this: who would we get?

If we're looking at a close to 8 figure buyout so we can hire a decent mid major coach it's just not that attractive. As we learned after Stallings left, and then Hurley passed, we're not a top destination, even though we pay up. I.e., Chris Mack isn't a realistic candidate.

I'm sure that's part of the decision.

Ask Pittjas. Whoever wins the CAA or SoCon.
