If Pitt finishes 11-21 or 12-21

But........
What about the buyout?
What about the way the team played in that 3 game stretch?
What about how they overcame the injuries, the police blotter?
What if he leaves and whole roster follows him?

Come on He SHOULD be back, according to some people.

Many sane individuals think he should be gone, but it isn't our money

So you're worried about the whole roster leaving? The roster that barely gave us double digit total wins? Other than Gueye, who will be gone anyhow, losing any of them won't move the needle. This is NOT a good ACC roster. The only issue after that would be Capel's total inability to recruit any players with a pulse, which he has proven he can't do too well.

Keeping Capel means a bunch of people give up their season tickets, then 23-24 is Year 1 of the next tenure so you sell no new tickets AGAIN, and you’re not looking at a chance at real success until 24-25.

This isn’t rocket science. Stop playing dumb.

Sometimes I wonder why he feels the need to play dumb. Other times it seems pretty clear that he's not playing.

The question hanging over all of this: who would we get?

If we're looking at a close to 8 figure buyout so we can hire a decent mid major coach it's just not that attractive. As we learned after Stallings left, and then Hurley passed, we're not a top destination, even though we pay up. I.e., Chris Mack isn't a realistic candidate.

I'm sure that's part of the decision.

If they decide to cut ties and run a competent search, I’m sure that they will get a quality candidate. For all that is bad, and it’s a lot at the moment, there’s still a floor to this job that other programs don’t have. Barring some seismic shift in conference realignment, the ACC brings enough prestige that serious guys are going to want to coach here. You have facilities, a great academic institution, etc. This isn’t a situation like Temple or even Memphis where, if the bottom falls out, the elevator can drop to the ground very quick.

Do I trust Lyke to get it right? We’ll see. I’ve maintained that we need a proven builder as our next coach and that may not be the sexiest name on the dance floor. Is she willing to sacrifice another 1-2 years while a guy strips this thing to the studs and builds it up right? I have my doubts.

Pitt should have kept Jamie until the program took the next leg down in 2018 under his watch instead of nudge him out when they did. That was the first huge mistake.

If Jamie, with his success, had trouble recruiting at Pitt, I don't know why anybody would expect anyone less than a tier one coach with an exceptional track record recruiting would fare any better.

Stallings is a much better coach than Capel. That isn't even a debate. KS got caught with a team way short on talent that wasn't physically able to compete in the ACC while he was attempting to churn a roster. Expectations were different back in 2016. There is nothing in his resume that suggests he would ever win enough at Pitt to be accepted either. And for a coach that is long in the tooth taking over a program, that's a huge problem.

And Lyke does not fire Capel,

It will be like Capel treating the double digit, season and home opening loss to The Citadel as “just another game”.

It would speak volumes. I doubt she could long survive.
If she doesn't fire Capel she should be fired and the new AD will do it. She's a nice lady and carries herself well, but she is lousy at evaluating coaches. The FB, Volleyball and men's soccer coaches were in place before she arrived. These are the sports that led to Pitt's rise in the Director's Cup. Subject to verification, I don't think any of her hires has delivered a winning ACC record in any year since she arrived.

One of her hires just had their sport's best finish in the NCAA tournament in the last 50 years last season.

IMHO, once he got to 10 wins Capel escaped the possibility of not being given that additional year, IMHO. Given buyout cost and coaching churn issues it would have taken a single digit wins finish (like Stallings) for Capel not to have been given one more year.

Or they need to bring back Randy Juhl to hire the coach while Heather continues work on her arena. She has proven to be lousy at hiring. Let someone else hire the coach and then call on her to extend them.

I think the reality is this happens in reverse. There's a covert search and feelers go out. Then, depending on what we're hearing from the market, we consider next steps. We don't make the same mistake as last time where we fire our coach and then realize plans A through D aren't real options.

After that the ACC money means that this job will always at least compete for mid major coaches.

That's the problem. We could make a new hire and be in the same situation in 2 or 3 years and then we could be paying 3 coaches while only one is actually coaching. I don't want a guy back who hasn't recruited a high school player in 2 years except Santos. It has proven very hard to recruit good talent here. We need to take a chance on a new guy, but, this next hire has to be more than a MM lottery ticket. This program has lost the respect it once had in the college hoops circles. No no name coach is coming in here and resurrecting the program. The situation to me looks pretty dire regardless of who is the head coach next year. I don't know how in the hell we got to this point, I just wish I could hit the reset button to 2009 and get a do over.

You don't know how we got to this point? It all started with truckster doofus and the dominoes started to fall from there. We're now at the end of the string with nothing to show for it but a bunch of losses and no recruits.

Another of her hires had their team break the school's all time scoring record just last weekend.
Big whoop. And the baseball team lost 2 games to Canisus. Face it, the sports are in the public eye are FB and BB. Her BB hires stink big time.

And her softball hire has sucked. Baseball is looking at a bad season after getting close to the NCAAT last year with an older team of players using their Covid year.

I was being sarcastic.
I am not the type to attack a college athlete, but I while there are some decent players, this roster will battle to finish at best bottom 3rd next year. I just think getting a new coach is the best option. Maybe financially it is hard, but that is my opinion.

You can have that Opinion, but it’s still 100% wrong, no matter how many more times you repeat it.. And I’m sure you will keep saying it..

It’s so far from reality that I’m not sure you can come back from it.. the first sign that should tell you is that YOU are the only one that thinks it..
Its not that I want Capel kept another year--its just that I think he will be given it since the optics arent quite bad enough.

You understand that this can be true and at the same time it is true that she has hired coaches that have had winning records, right?

This is like the Branch Rickey - Ralph Kiner showdown. We can go 11-21 with a $500,000 coach if that's what they want to settle for.

He went 16-17 in the ACC and 23-20 overall with a bunch of 25 year olds. Great season.

Well first of all, I didn't mention the baseball coach in any of my posts.

But secondly, yes, in relation to what Pitt usually is in baseball last year was, well, not a great season but certainly a much better than normal season. Most people thought that we got screwed out of an NCAA tournament bid, and Pitt baseball is almost never even in that conversation, so yeah, that was clearly better than what we normally get out of our baseball team.

Thank you for once again inadvertently helping to prove my point.

He’s gonna get another year and every time we win a singular game or Horton gets hot the joey David’s and wannstache’s of the world will beat their chests until the next predictable skid. We might as well just face it and abandon the Pete next year. Eyes to the 23 coaching search
Go or stay? I could care less. Pitt basketball is so irrelevant now I don't pay much attention. I wouldn't expect Lyke to do the right thing. She has a real skill at hiring losing coaches,
