If you say Pitting you’re a jagoff

I guess pitting is a huge conference road win when you’re a five point dog. Small-minded critics who don’t realize that football is a 60 minute game.

Is pitting when your defense forces 6 turnovers and is leading the country in sacks? Is pitting when your qb who is not having his best game takes the team 80 yards in 47 seconds on 4 plays to win the game? Is it a strip sack to end any hope of a game-tying field goal?

Pitting is a lazy, snarky term for morons who love to criticize everthing pitt does. Losses are “typical pitt” and wins are “almost pitting it away” and “yeah they won but they really suck”.

I was as pissed off as anyone at certain points in the game but agree exactly with what you’re saying.

The refs gifting away two 2 point conversions will have that effect... fortunately the second one was so obnoxious they had to replay the attempt..but none of the 3 attempts actually scored points last night.

In all honesty, Duke pitted. You can’t lose a game in which your opponent had a half dozen personal fouls, 140 yards in penalty yards against, and 4 turnovers.

Call it whatever you want to call it. A big road win, yes. Gutsy late comeback with a TD drive under two minutes, yes. Nearly three quarters of defensive shut down football, yes. A lot of good for sure and the win is all that matters. That said, it was nearly a disaster for reasons that were almost entirely self inflicted. Yes, the officiating sucked from start to finish, but even with some of the bad early calls this game should've been a second half snoozer. Instead, the Pitt coaching staff yet again forced the kids to have to overcome some absolutely horrid decision making. Before we even get to the decision to have Paris Ford returning a punt at the 5 yard line, we have the two previous Pitt drives while up 26-3. The first one begins with roughly 8:30 remaining and we pick up 8 yards on two carries before throwing incomplete on third down with an illegal shift penalty. We milk very little clock by snapping with 20+ seconds on the play clock and punt it back to Duke with over 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd. The D comes up big again with another pick and sets up the offense at midfield. Still up 26-3 with 5:18 remaining in the 3rd, this Pitt drive eats a total of 55 seconds off the clock, features two incompletions, a two yard run and an intentional grounding call. So if you're keeping track, that's two straight drives with a 23 point lead late in the 3rd quarter that eat a combined total of 2:21 of clock and net -7 yards and Pitt is penalized twice. Three runs for 10 yards and three incompletions, still inexplicably pushing the pace and not milking the play clock with a defense playing lights out. At that point in time the ONLY thing that can bring Duke back into the game are turnovers on special teams and offense along with leaving them time. Managing either one of those drives likely pushes the 3rd quarter to its end. If you're Duke, your biggest problems down 23 with just over a quarter remaining are 1) Trying to move on the Pitt D and 1a) Having enough time to come back should you figure out how to move on the Pitt D. Two of the last three Pitt games have featured clear cut moments when game management was absolutely awful. The end of the second quarter against UCF when Pitt needlessly remained somewhat uptempo, stalled instead of burning the half to it's end and punted back to UCF who took it down for 3. And last night. Which was then compounded by the very poor decision of having Ford back to receive that punt. Whether they were benching Ffrench for lousy ball security or not, putting Ford back inside his ten to field that kick and then not drilling it in his head to let anything near the 5 yard line bounce is just bad coaching. The one thing you simply can't do in that scenario is turn the ball over on special teams. That cracked the door and now all of the sudden an offense that a few minutes earlier probably could've sat on the ball for the last 5-8 minutes of the third and all of the fourth and come away with a comfortable win has to go out and get points. To their credit, they got it done in crunch time in a big way. But man, it did not need to be that difficult. Those kinds of mistakes bring the zebras back into play, bring undisciplined penalties back into play, bring a missed PAT back into play and sooner or later will cost Pitt a winnable game. This defense is playing well enough to run the table. The offense needs to get the RB's healthy, find some level of balance and manage the games with the big picture in mind. I like Narduzzi, I like Whipple, but if they don't figure out a way to avoid the easily avoidable mistakes that can cost games they'll be the biggest obstacle to winning 9 or 10 games this year.

Truth is before the Last drive it was epic pitting

But give this team and picket tons of. Credit. They made the plays when the game was on the line

IMO this was a huge program changing win. Had they lost it could have been crushing But overcoming their self inflicted wounds and awful officiating was huge and should help this team grow.

I was amazed at how dominant the defense was other than the period where they were put in bad situations with the turnover. This defense is fast and has swagger The good news is next year they will be even better

I was also impressed with KPs composure on the last drive. He’s really starting to look like a D1 QB something I never thought would happen.

We're going to have to agree to disagree if you think last night's game was 'pitting'.

hey hobo, please provide some examples of "pitting" that don't include a meaningless bowl game with a staff that didn't want to be there.

Cincy 2009, NCSU 2009, the UNC game against trebisky I think. UNC last year. The PSU game where we kicked a FG from the one. The VT game where we got goaline standed at the end.

uh no, Silly, Pitting (or the process of Pitting) is having all those wonderful things but having a bonehead fumble when up by 23 late in the third quarter on a punt that never should have been fielded (in a game where the opposition is total demoralized) followed by a fumble in your own territory on the very next possession and all of the sudden falling being in the score...bizarre unnecessary schitt...

man, we are raising a sensitive bunch of kids who are offended by everything...

The won, but no denying they sure almost Pitt the Bed...(there, there is a new one to lament over)

I think you misinterpreted my post. I agree that because they ended up winning it wasn’t Pitting and in fact was a huge win that could end up being a program changer. I’m pumped about the rest of the year and especially next year

However it was classic Pitting from the end of the third quarter until that last drive.

you're going back to games in 2009? You mean no team has ever blown a lead before? Maybe Penn State in the Rose Bowl against USC?

Really, that's the best you got?

There used to be a thing called "Clemsoning". Not anymore. Shaking that moniker has to start somewhere. I think Pitt started to shake it the last three weeks by winning these games.

I recall it was not that long ago that WVU absolutely destroyed Clemson in a bowl game, with Holgerson coaching.

Culture can change, and I think we are watching it this season. Pitt is learning how to win these games. They are a tight-knit team, and they support each other and hold themselves accountable. Are we and will we ever be Clemson? I don't think so. Can Pitt be a very good team that consistently finishes in the Top 20? Yeah, they sure can do that.

Well, in tonight's case, they didn't, yet Pitt fans continue to claim they did.

Odd, isn't it?

They lost a huge lead. Even though Pitt won in the end, they still Pitted by letting Duke come back. Like I said, if you don't want to hear it, Pitt needs to stop doing it so often.

And before people jump on me, I predicted that KP would be the best Pitt QB since Van Pelt and this team would go 10-2.

This is a great post. I do think that pulling wins out like they did against UCF and Duke and even Delaware where they clearly were disinterested were huge wins in terms of what you've pointed out. Those all were gut checks where the team found a way to overcome their own self inflicted wounds and some very bad officiating in the case of Duke.

Again, saying they Pitted in the fourth quarter BEFORE the huge drive is accurate. However the bottom line is this team is creating a new culture and they won games that past teams might have lost.

uh, he missed the Granddaddy of All Pitt'ings....the Armed Forces bowl against Houston a few years ago. .A Pitt'ing that all other Pitt'ings are compared to..classic! I mean you look up Pitt'ing in the dictionary and there es a picture of the boxscore for that one...
