Call it whatever you want to call it. A big road win, yes. Gutsy late comeback with a TD drive under two minutes, yes. Nearly three quarters of defensive shut down football, yes. A lot of good for sure and the win is all that matters. That said, it was nearly a disaster for reasons that were almost entirely self inflicted. Yes, the officiating sucked from start to finish, but even with some of the bad early calls this game should've been a second half snoozer. Instead, the Pitt coaching staff yet again forced the kids to have to overcome some absolutely horrid decision making. Before we even get to the decision to have Paris Ford returning a punt at the 5 yard line, we have the two previous Pitt drives while up 26-3. The first one begins with roughly 8:30 remaining and we pick up 8 yards on two carries before throwing incomplete on third down with an illegal shift penalty. We milk very little clock by snapping with 20+ seconds on the play clock and punt it back to Duke with over 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd. The D comes up big again with another pick and sets up the offense at midfield. Still up 26-3 with 5:18 remaining in the 3rd, this Pitt drive eats a total of 55 seconds off the clock, features two incompletions, a two yard run and an intentional grounding call. So if you're keeping track, that's two straight drives with a 23 point lead late in the 3rd quarter that eat a combined total of 2:21 of clock and net -7 yards and Pitt is penalized twice. Three runs for 10 yards and three incompletions, still inexplicably pushing the pace and not milking the play clock with a defense playing lights out. At that point in time the ONLY thing that can bring Duke back into the game are turnovers on special teams and offense along with leaving them time. Managing either one of those drives likely pushes the 3rd quarter to its end. If you're Duke, your biggest problems down 23 with just over a quarter remaining are 1) Trying to move on the Pitt D and 1a) Having enough time to come back should you figure out how to move on the Pitt D. Two of the last three Pitt games have featured clear cut moments when game management was absolutely awful. The end of the second quarter against UCF when Pitt needlessly remained somewhat uptempo, stalled instead of burning the half to it's end and punted back to UCF who took it down for 3. And last night. Which was then compounded by the very poor decision of having Ford back to receive that punt. Whether they were benching Ffrench for lousy ball security or not, putting Ford back inside his ten to field that kick and then not drilling it in his head to let anything near the 5 yard line bounce is just bad coaching. The one thing you simply can't do in that scenario is turn the ball over on special teams. That cracked the door and now all of the sudden an offense that a few minutes earlier probably could've sat on the ball for the last 5-8 minutes of the third and all of the fourth and come away with a comfortable win has to go out and get points. To their credit, they got it done in crunch time in a big way. But man, it did not need to be that difficult. Those kinds of mistakes bring the zebras back into play, bring undisciplined penalties back into play, bring a missed PAT back into play and sooner or later will cost Pitt a winnable game. This defense is playing well enough to run the table. The offense needs to get the RB's healthy, find some level of balance and manage the games with the big picture in mind. I like Narduzzi, I like Whipple, but if they don't figure out a way to avoid the easily avoidable mistakes that can cost games they'll be the biggest obstacle to winning 9 or 10 games this year.
