I'm requesting Penn St fans advice on parking

I didn't realize until this evening, per the Penn St website, that all the parking listed on the gameday parking maps is by permit only. I am driving in from Pittsburgh via route 22 through Altoona on Saturday. I am fine with parking in a field and walking as long as it not a downpour on Saturday, in which can I would be afraid that my car could get stuck. Can you advise me on what I should do ?

Thank you.

I am trying to think of alternatives to parking in a field. You can rule out anywhere in downtown State College. Without a pass I don't think that you will have any alternative but to park in one of the fields. I am trying to think if there is parking around the Nittany Lion Inn, which is a little bit of a walk to Beaver Stadium. I have never tried to park there but I am going to guess that if there is any street parking around there that it will be taken. Maybe another PSU fan will have some better advice. I have parked in the fields whenever I go (no parking pass) and have not had a problem.

Thank you. Are the yellow lots the "field lots " that you are referring to that require no parking pass ? If so that would be fine with me. What lot do you think would be the easiest to get into coming off off I 99 from Altoona ?

This late date, I would believe that you have two choices. 1)...pay the $40 ridiculous price the bastards want to enter the general public lots, or 2)....buy a ticket pass from the scaplers while you waiting in line to the parking.

If you're not willing to brave the shuttle full of PSU fans (and trust me, no matter what anybody says here, nothing is going to happen to you), park at Walmart and call an Uber, and just get dropped off at the corner of Atherton and Park and walk a mile down Park to the stadium. Under no circumstances try to get any closer to the stadium if you don't know the lay of the land. It simply isn't necessary. I know a lot of people who stay at Toftrees and shuttle in, even. There is no need to drive in any closer than this. The shuttle is only a 15 minute ride.

Definitely don't bother with parking at the stadium. Park at one of the shopping centers and take the shuttle.

Listen to doc57, no one is going to give you a hard time.

As an alternative, you could park at the parking deck by the Nittany Lion Inn or on Eisenhower, they both typically have spots. We have a pass by the baseball stadium but usually give it away.

Good question about the yellow lots. I found this map of University Park and how the parking lots are laid out- http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...-18/misc_non_event/beaver-stadium-parking.pdf It would appear that the yellow lots are where you can pay $40 to park. Yes, I know it is high. Penn State fans complain too. I would take the advice that other PSU fans have given you about taking the shuttle or Uber to a spot about a mile away.

What the hell is wrong with you??? I try to take some time to write a response to the Pitt fan that wants information on parking and you reply by referring to Penn State as "bastards." Yes, you are right- EVERYONE associated with Penn State should be burned at the stake or drawn-and-quartered. We are all the worst people to ever walk the face of the Earth. Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. Everything and everyone at Pitt = GREAT, everything and everyone at Penn State = HORRIBLE.

Ah, hey, dummy? Yeah, the fan you are replying to is a nitter, not a Pitt fan. Just guessing, but I think he's calling them bastards for charging people $40 to park for football games, not simply because they are nitters.

on a related note, how strict are they at enforcing the no glass policy in the yellow lots?
If you are inconspicuous with it you probably not have any issue. Putt it in a cozy or pour into a cup and you will be fine. However all it takes is one of the by the book officers to ruin your day. I would probably just get beer cans and if you have liquor or wine just keep it in the trunk out of view.

They do a good job with maintaining the lots so I doubt you will have a issue with a car getting stuck. I been in plenty of rainy games and never had a problem. If you are worried about it just come early via atherton street to park avenue. Those lots are very level.

Alternatives:

1. The gameday shuttles as other recommended. There are several.
https://www.catabus.com/ServiceSchedules/CATABUS/CommunityService/FootballShuttle/index.html

2. There are several parking garages on campus that are available on game day. I believe event parking is $25. They will take parking passes also.

To get to the Eisenhower Parking Deck you will want to come down Atherton Street and then turn on to Curtain road. Then make a right on Bigler and then make the next right on to Eisenhower. The garage will be on your left.

To get to the East Parking Deck you will want to come down Atherton Street and then turn on to park avenue. Then make a right on Bigler and the garage will be on the right.

East parking deck is labeled EAP on the map and the Eisenhower parking deck is EPD.

3. Downtown Garages.

There are three parking garages in town. The rate is $2.25 an hour. You can walk to the stadium or take the free blue or white campus loop busses.

If you get there early enough, park at Grace Lutheran on S Garner St in town. $15 to park all day. For $1 take the shuttle (a school bus) up to the stadium. You get it on the corner of College Ave and Hiester St. It runs every 20 minutes. Be careful though. You're in the heart of enemy territory.

You won't have any problem getting a yellow parking pass and I'm almost certain you won't get harassed on the shuttles but as a Penn State fan who goes up quite a bit I would sooner be in one of the yellow Lots then Parking at a Shopping Center and take a shuttle because who knows how long the wait and how long it'll take.

Weather for Saturday is Sunny with a high of 65. No rain in sight.

My advice would be to buy a yellow parking pass from a scalper on your way in and just park in one of the yellow lots. You will be fine. I wouldn't pay more than $30 from a scalper. PSU will charge you $40 are the gate for a non prepaid pass.

Thanks for everyone's advice in this thread. So much good advice that it takes all of my worries away. I wish all of you good health and happiness.

Get a parking pass from a scalper as you approach the lots. Or just suck it up and pay the $40 as you enter the lots.

As for the glass rule, just stay within the limits of drunken revelry and put your bottles in a bag instead of on the ground, and you'll be fine.

For those wondering about the $40 day of game parking price, here goes: All streets that are open to traffic headed to Beaver Stadium are lined with traffic controllers. Your parking pass is to be visible such that the traffic staff knows where to send you and you don't need to ask for directions since you're being directed to the correct lot. Vehicles without a parking pass tend to be those that are somewhat lost and are continually stopping to ask directions thus causing a traffic mess. The $40 price tag helps ensure that very few arrive without their colored parking pass. The price in advance is $15 for a yellow ticket. Many scalpers will be selling parking passes on the way to Beaver Stadium. I usually see 3 or 4 of them on Park Avenue as I approach the stadium from Atherton (Business route 322).

The $40 price tag is there to ensure that they make more money. Nothing more, nothing less. The price in advance was $20, not $15.

I would second the option of trying to park downtown- My dad and I went to the Iowa game last year and we parked in yellow lots- tons of the college kids partying and drinking- It was just the 2 of us and we walked down town 2 times as the yellow lots weren't our scene- so we made note to park at the church next game we go - I would say if you can get in town by 7:30 or 8:00 park at the church and grab breakfast at the waffle shop- you can take a loop bus or shuttle to stadium or you can walk it - my dad lost feeling in his legs last year the morning of the Pitt psu game so he was in hospital and was treated and out a week later by mid October he could handle the wall from downtown to stadium

Nittany Lion Inn parking deck is cash only. No issues parking there. If you arrive during the heavy traffic time, it takes about the same amount of time to walk to the stadium from the NLI as it does to drive.
Also, you can use a yellow pass or pay cash and park at the East Deck (people call it the creamery deck). Short walk, hard surface, tailgating allowed, could fill up closer to game time.
