In the coverage, I heard that NASA placed the odds on the survival of the crew at 50/50 at best. A condolence speech for Pres Nixon to read to the nation was even drafted. And they still willingly, eagerly went ahead.

Yeah . Not many (including me) didn't realize the risk involved and the crap shoot they took . Very ballsy I must say .
