An interesting note on our two transfers, but especially Austin. If Austin can continue his trend of basically being a wing who exclusively has his attempts either at the rim or catch-and-shoot three’s, we could have something pretty special.
Zack Austin, from High Point: Wing rotation, likely starter. Austin’s shot chart is literally all 3s and shots at the rim. The 6-foot-7, 201-pound wing struggled to make off-the-bounce 2s last year, so he cut them out of his game. He doubled down on what he does best, and it worked flawlessly. Austin is a high-level athlete who goes hunting in transition. Austin scored over a third of his points in transition, and he threw down 43 dunks in 29 games. When he isn’t hanging on the rim, Austin is drilling 3s. Austin shot 36% on catch-and-shoot 3s last season. When his feet are set, Austin is nearly automatic. He has to improve shooting on the move, but he can be an impactful weapon for Pitt right away. Pitt can house some teams when Blake Hinson and Austin are locked in from downtown at the same time.
Ishmael Leggett, from Rhode Island: Backcourt rotation, likely starter. Leggett is likely best-suited playing the 2, but he earned 169 pick-and-roll reps last year for Archie Miller, so there’s an opportunity for him to earn time at the 1 for Pitt, if necessary. Leggett lived at the foul line. He shot 84% from the charity stripe on 174 attempts. But Leggett shot over 37% on catch-and-shoot 3s, but he needs to finish at the rim at a higher clip to take his game to new heights. Shooting under 50% on layups just won't cut it.
