This is a pet peeve for me for a long time, I can't stand it. Like last night when Kenny ran for 26 yards and it gets called back for "illegal formation" because Pickens very slightly shuffled a foot. it's just stupid and ruins a lot of good ACTION! Like a team scores a 50-yard bomb for a TD and it gets called back for a TE being lined up a foot behind the OT on the other side of the field. Personally, I'd prefer to go to CFL motion rules and just have the 5 offensive linemen having to remain in place and everyone else's positioning and slight flinches don't matter! it would eliminate A LOT of flags, always a good thing IMO!

ya, stop enforcing the rules of the game...that'll show 'em! NFL needs more of an NBA feel to it... How's about we teach our players to follow them such that they are not called? Maybe? I think getting set before the snap dates back to 1894 so I'm guessing they did not foresee it ruining Kenny's big run....

just laziness by pickens. think pickett could have looked over too to make sure he was set but blame goes to pickens for just half-azzing it to the line.

Who gives a F about the 1894 "rules" any way flags and stoppages and erasure of great plays can be reduced make the whole sport WAY BETTER! The sport of football could eliminate 50% of the rules and nobody would notice and it would be better and more entertaining.

When they showed the replay of that illegal formation call, looked to me like Pickens actually set his feet before the snap, but was still moving his arm fidgeting with the mouthpiece in his hand.

I guess I’m not fully aware of the rule, did he need to have him arm set without movement as well?

These rules are useless, all they do is slow down the game and erase some good action sometimes. Did you ever notice how an O lineman can stand up and point or something and then get in his stance? why isn't that movement? I can't believe anyone can support these rules when a long TD is erased because a guy on the other side of the field lined up a foot too far behind the line, WTF? People don't show up to see trivial, nitpicky rules enforced.

uh, it was called sarcasm...you struggle with it I know...

The sport of football could eliminate 50% of the rules.. but alas you did not say that in your original post as you wanted a penalty that was a penalty to not be called as it was "irrelevant". Follow the rules, WAY BETTER.

You have little understanding of what people say, you are seriously dense, the point is these rules should be eliminated, they penalize good play over trivialities. and YOU CANNOT READ, I talk about eliminating these rules in the original post.

Officiating is maddeningly inconsistent. The ones mentioned the most from the night before, the Pickens penalty for wiping his nose (or whatever), the mysterious Minkah penalty, some league flunky assigned to “grade” the officials will likely call both of those “valid” penalties, and in the dusty annals of the rules, probably they are. The issue is that those same things happen throughout games and are only called at random. For every call made, the same thing happens before and after and doesn’t get called.

Just like there are too many reviews, there are too many plays that occur now when everybody, players and fans alike, suspend their reaction until they see if (more like when and where) there’s been a flag thrown.

It’s a clear sign that these guys get off on being a critical factor in the decision. It’s in line with the (hysterical) trend if so many of them ‘roiding themselves up to look ‘buff’ for the camera.

They’re necessary evils for the game and need to be as low profile as possible. The problem is that they see themselves in a totally opposite way.

Irrelevant Penalties ruining Great Plays was the title of your post...no such thing as "irrelevant" as it either is or is not a penalty.. Having an offical determine "relevance" is anarchy. ..You did mention going with stupid Canadian football head-less chicken rules so I'll give you that...btw, why are you shouting? Sounds like someone needs some Dr. Rick.

What is irrelevant is what you think of CFL rules, my whole point is elimination of these rules. It's just my opinion, good for you if you enjoy the game stopping every third play because a guy was two steps too far back or a WR twitched his arm. and again you are dense, I never said the officials should determine the relevance, I'm saying the rules should be changed so nobody is throwing flags over these things. someone needs mental help? it's you making such a big deal over analyzing someone else's opinion, you disagree, that's fine, just say that and stop.

Some people would be happy if the refs waited until after the play to decide whether or not to call a penalty. That way they wouldn't wipe out a nice run by one of their favorite team's players.

Now on the other hand, if a guy on the other team commits a penalty, throw that flag! Heck, throw two, just in case no one sees the first one!

what was the verbiage the booth ref used to explain why Minkah’ shot wasn’t a penalty? And one remeber what he said? I had never heard it explained in that way before.

It didn’t look like a penalty and I watched it 20 times. And if it was a penalty, the exact scenario probably doesn’t get called half the time. Which makes me wonder what is going through the minds of people who thought it was dirty.

You're just being an A-hole like you always are, I'm just talking about not wanting some of these rules to exist at all, it has nothing to do with which team it's called against.

Basically he said that it wasn't forcible contact to the head or neck area. It's not enough to touch the quarterback's head, it has to be forcible. And it wasn't.

He also pointed out that the first point of contact was probably the shoulder, which also would make it not a penalty.

Nah, I'm just laughing at the whiny beyotch.

Is it really that hard for all the players to come to a stop for one whole second before the play starts?

There are reasons for the rule. Your inability to understand them doesn't make the rule itself the stupid part of the equation.

But is taking away entertainment value worth it to enforce such trivial, anal little nitpicky rules? Yu of course are just a weak ass follower, whatever sht they shovel at you, you just accept, and thank them for being willing to feed you sht.

Explain in detail the reasons for the rule? My proposal would be that the only mandatory part of a formation is to have 5 offensive lineman on the line of scrimmage and everyone else could be anywhere, and everyone else is always an eligible receiver, what exactly does that hurt? Explain why we need 7 on the line? Explain why it matters where the non offensve lineman are positioned?

We don't "need" any number of people on the line. They could, if they wanted to, make the rule that the only person who needs to be on the line is the center. But one way or the other there has to be some sort of rule. What difference does it make if it's five or six or seven or three? But the one thing that making it seven does is it makes it easy for the defense (and the officials) to determine who the eligible receivers are on each play.

But if the rule was that you only needed five on the line would it also be nitpicky if a team only had four, or if they had six? What you are really advocating is basically no rules at all. Which is, typically, moronic.

We can agree to disagree, because the O linemen are ineligible receivers. Then after that you can have just five on the line, or any number from 5-11 with no flags-only the 5 linemen are ineligible, the rest, anyone outside or behind them are eligible., the 5 linemen are pretty much stationary always in the same place, even in an unbalanced line situation. there's a difference there, you're not bright enough to get it. I'm not advocating no rules, but less rules is a good idea, but you're either to dumb or to obedient to get it. You're just a big A-hole and your purpose is to seek out my posts and personally attack me, if you don't like my ideas, just say so, but you don't have to be the TOTAL DICK that you are.

Football 101: The offense has to be "set" before the snap because they have the advantage of knowing the snap count. Prior to the snap, you can shift but you still have to get set. One player is permitted to be moving in the backfield so long as they aren't going forward when the ball is snapped. Again, because knowing the snap count is an advantage.

So far as QB hits are concerned, I have no idea what the rule even is anymore. KP got wrapped up and drilled into the turf several times the last two weeks but for some reason a relatively harmless shoulder to shoulder hit is flagged. Really think the NFL needs to review anything that's flagged as a personal foul, just like college, if you're going to call it that way. The speed of the game and the site angles have to be part of the problem. Right now, it's just not working.

Even so, if receivers are totally set in place like statues, why does it matter if they are on the line or behind the line, or if another receiver is set outside of them?

That's just being nitpicky.

No rules! No rules! No rules! No rules!

You must hate offsides in soccer, then.
Actually I don't, as long as they are lenient with it. recently they loosened up the rule for VAR review. And soccer is a different sport, offside is often the reason for a score, in football, a guy slightly out of position on the opposite side of the field at the snap, didn't help anyone make a play.
