J. Page interviews B. Howland

I wish he would have elaborated on how he would have made a final four at Pitt. I am assuming Ben didn't mean to slight Jamie, it sounded more like he thought he was just really close here (probably true.)

Agree. Just think he thought he had things rolling here.

Interesting interview/conversation.

As an aside, I was lucky enough to vacation in Santa Barbara earlier this month. Now, I'm wondering where Howland's house is located and if I had seen it without knowing---probably not.

Fantastic place to live or more realistically visit. I had not payed much attention to his SB connections and roots until now.

If I were him I might very well call it a career and enjoy life on the pacific coast.

Interesting interview. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since the first B. East ship!

I still think going to UCLA was a mistake. I know he wanted to be near his Dad (who died not long after Ben arrived), but there are more egos per square inch in Lala land than per square 100 miles in Pittsburgh.
Coaching g at UCLA has a short shelf life and the boosters there turn halos into nooses pretty damn quick.

Maybe so. But he did of course have three final fours with a legit chance for a national title, recruiting tons of NBA players. I think he would have kept his job if not for the Sports Illustrated article about Reeves Nelson etc. The year after the Nelson article, they pulled in a top recruiting class but then had the Shabazz Muhammad suspension and Jordan Adams broke his leg if my memory is right and that was all probably the straw that broke the camel's back. I think without the scandals, he won enough to stay around.

But he didn’t win a title and in Westwood close 2nd sucks. You forget that highly visible boosters went after him with malice.
Dean Smith was close for two decades before he won and no one chased him out. And candidly, UNC passed UCLA in stature some time ago.

UCLA boosters who still think it's 1970, when they have the best coach in the game and one of the (if not THE) cheatingest program in the country are probably the most delusional fans in all of college athletics.

Him leaving was a no brainer and the 3 straight Final Fours justified the move.

He probably would've gotten Pitt to a Final Four if he stayed, but that's life.

Different time period.

Dean Smith would've been long gone in this era.

Calipari won a title and his time at Kentucky is probably nearing an end there.

All true. Cal's situation is interesting. Seems like he has worn out his welcome and his latest tiff with the football coach hasn't helped. If football has a good year and he doesn't at least get to a final 4, he could be gone. Be interesting to see where he goes from there.

Cal can come on home to Pitt!

There is a sizeable faction of the UK fanbase that wants him gone. Well, maybe it's closer to the Pitt/Dixon situation, where a small percentage of brain dead idiots wanted him gone but they were very loud and made it seem like everyone wanted him out.

It would be a very big check to buy out Cal. I think they're praying he just goes to the NBA again.

“We had a caller ask today about Calipari’s buyout today on KSR Radio and I had the wrong amount,” said Jones. “It is $52 million this year and decreases by a little over $6 million a year over the next eight seasons.”
