I have been a Jamie supporter for 12 years. I still like the guy a lot but it doesn't mean questioning what in the heck is going on is forbidden fruit. I have so many thoughts:
1. Where is the talent? Outside of Young and Artis, the rest of our roster is at best marginal.
2. Good programs have teams that get better as the year progress - our identity the last four to five years is just the opposite.
3. Player development, outside of Lamar Patterson, has been non-existent in recent history. James Robinson is the prime example of this - he is basically the same player that entered the program four years ago.
4. The "scripting" that occurs game after game is really getting old. Chris Jones has to come off the bench at the 15 minute mark every game. The first half starters MUST also start the second half - today, we got nothing from Jones and Smith. Wilson had given us a spark late in the first half. But, Smith had to start the second half. Why? Because Because Because.
5. With the way Jones and Smith have played the past month, why isn't Cam Johnson given a shot at the two? Just thinking of the accolades Jones has received from this board in the past - I never saw it. Hopefully he will move to greener pastures next year opening up another scholarship.
6. I watch WVU play a multitude of defenses. We play one defense. Man to Man with no pressure. We occasionally add in a half____ 2-3 zone. And what about the press? The zone press that we have seen this year is nothing more than a waste of time. In the second half today, we tried an all out press that resulted in three Virginia passes for a dunk at the other end. We are down by 17 with four minutes to go and on the defensive end are happy to let the Cavs run 20 seconds off the clock in an uncontested fashion. We surrender!!
7. The lack of ball movement on offense the past month is totally unacceptable. When Young is doubled, that ball has to quickly go back out and rotated to the weak side. This is the only way Smith/Jones/Cam /James can get uncontested shots. With James' inability to penetrate, this is about the only option we have.
8. To me, it is hard to get excited about this team. Seems like we don't get many loose balls. Just no fire. But really, see #1 above. The big problem - no talent.
Mr. Barnes has seen a lot of empty seats this year. Finish 3-5 and there will be a lot more next year. I know all about Jamie's extended contract BUT this thought has to have crossed his mind - What about Archie
Miller? Local kid with a ton of success at Dayton. Part of a great pedigree. This program needs something - a shot in the arm?
Hail to Pitt!
