that has actually stuck around over the years, thru great years and tough ones he has remained loyal to Pitt when the Graham's, Chryst's and Howland's of the world all left. The reason Pitt will never have stability is the delusional fan base. Instead of supporting a class act who runs a clean program and wins more than he loses, thru some tough times, we can't wait to run him out of town. Are we going to win a national championship with Jamie? None of us know, but none of us know if we will with someone else either! He has taken us to places NO ONE else has in the history of Pitt basketball so I'll gamble with him instead of someone new.
I can't wait until Narduzzi has a couple 6 win seasons after a 9 win season...run him out of town as well and keep the coaching carousel going!!! Better yet, I can't wait until we become Penn State or Duquense in basketball...that's what most Pitt fans deserve

Are u a fan of Pitt or Dixon? Personally, Pitt is my #1 concern.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
With all due respect neither of your replies address my original post. If your #1 concern is Pitt and you think they'd be better off without him then my #1 concern is Pitt and I think we are better off with him.

If u place Pitt as the priority, then u should never want them to lose. Every fan base has disgruntled fans.

He has stated on many occasions for those fans that actually follow the athletic program that he received some raises unsolicited. Was he supposed to say no? I hate to say this but I would go if I were him because TCU fans will be much more loyal.

And just like the multitude of coaches who have left Pitt, he woulda got those same raises if he left Pitt.

Look, people can think what they want about Jamie, but to say he hasn't been loyal because he got raises is silly. People came after him hard, and he could have left, and he didn't. I realize most on here wish he had, but he did not.

Who is the last football or basketball coach at Pitt with as long a tenure as JD? Might be like Bob Timmons or Jock Sutherland?

Interesting - what has their attendance been like the last 15 years?

Because Pitt's fan base is different than any other. Blue blood fan bases are loyal because they ALWAYS win, not because they're intrinsically better or more loyal. I'm tired of the "we should be happy with what we have" doctrine. I'm tired of the "clean program" propaganda. I'm tired of being told I should settle for less because I'm a Pitt fan. Success in college basketball and life requires risk. Maybe some of you don't have that courage.

The courage? Wtf can you or I do to elevate the program. It is out of my control. It's why I don't have breakdowns over it like some on here do.

I understand how you're feeling. It's the same way I'd almost like to see Mike Tomlin leave, and then watch the Steelers string together some 12 and 13 loss seasons. As a fan. I'd hate for it to happen, but I'd enjoy watching the haters suffer.

I'd take much more solace in Pitt continuing on this path with Dixon than I would with seeing everything collapse and being told "well, at least they tried and took a risk, that's what you need to do to be a big boy in college sports".

Partially because seeing it collapse sounds miserable, but mostly because the "you need to take risks" line is 100x more facile (and false) than any sort of justification for attempting to keep this going until they catch some break.

Timmons. 1953-54, to 1967-68. The program was garbage when he took over, and garbage when he left, but he had some good years in the middle.

But not all fans accuse a player of point shaving.

Pitts football coaches have been traditionally under paid and had to work in (until recently) average to below average faculties. And also unil recently a 2nd rate conference. Dixon has been compensated extremely well usually top 15 in the country and been fortunate to play in the best basketball conferences ever created. People are usually as loyal as the size of their paychecks

Does he? In conference games, he's 45-45 the last 5 years, 4-5 in conference tournament games, 1-3 in NCAAT games, 0-1 in the NIT......but 5-1 in the CBI.

Jamie caught lightning in the bottle with early with the BK/Page/Brown crew. Got a little lucky with Gray's development, then got super lucky that Blair grew up down the street. At least he didn't waste him like he did Adams. The fact that Adams could only average 7 and 6 here is one of the biggest indictements of Dixon. The great Ethan Happ averaged 12 for Wisconsin and wont sniff the NBA.

Jamie's best coaching job was with Gibbs/Brown/Wanamaker/McGhee. No "lucky" recruits and a team that greatly overachieved. Other than that team, he relied on Howland's players, a once a career improvement in Gray, or an NBA player growing up down the street.

Give me a break. Tomlin leaving wouldn't hurt us either. He's another guy that has done next to nothing for years now. Won with Cowher's players. Please.

I'd rather see Dixon stay, for sure. He just needs better assistants (at least one as associate HC) who can carry their weight. Every time I see Jamie, I get the sense that he isnt getting the support he needs and it's dragging him and the program down. Maybe Barnes approaches the subject with him and he scoffs at the idea, in which case you let him walk. But if like to think Dixon can be successful again with one big time, high energy assistant who can also recruit.

That about sums it up nicely - it's time for a change

Sometimes a marriage runs its course. This has. Nothing personal. If Jamie leaves (please leave) and he comes back, he should be greeted with a resounding standing ovation and video tribute for his loyalty, success and the way he carried himself.

That being said, this relationship has grown stale and Jamie appears unable to change enough to reinvent this program.

The reason Pitt hasn't had stability is because of a "delusional" fanbase? What a profoundly dumb statement. Pitt hasn't had stability because they have hired a parade of rumdums and when they by accident actually found a good coach, they refused to pay the going rate. But that's not the case with Dixon. Here's a guy that Montana St. wouldn't hire after Howland's departure and Pitt took a flyer on him and gave him the keys to the cadillac even though he hadn't ever run any program let alone one which at the time he was hired was a top 10 team. And where's his loyalty been, Pitt having given him that opportunity. He's flirted with every major school who showed any interest in him since he was hired. But that's his prerogative because it's a business. But that goes two ways. His teams have underperformed in nearly every NCAA tournament he has participated in and he's stunk the last 5 years so he needs to be told if you love Pitt and want to stay, then fine, but otherwise, just hit the road! And he also needs to be told that he needs to make changes on his staff and improve his recruiting because he's not performing satisfactorily-if his ego can't take that, then he also should hit the road.

It's amazing to me that you wrote this me 8 people liked it. You would sacrifice Pitt being good so you could be right.

Me, I'm a Pitt fan. And although I'm not a Dixon fan I had my Pitt shit on Friday night rooting for him and them like crazy.

I agree that JD deserves the eternal respect of the Pitt fan base for what he has done here. I also agree that I'd like to see him stick it out here and turn this thing around, I honestly believe he has earned that. The rest of your post--like the "we should all be ecstatic because he's a good guy and he wins more than he loses"--is pure garbage.

You play this game to win, and win in March. JD has proven that he can do that--if he has the players. He needs to go get them--that has been his greatest deficiency. Those players are out there to be had. Just look at all the mid-majors in the tournament with excellent guard play, great perimeter shooters, etc. We need a real big man or two--athletic guys that can defend the rim, grab rebounds, block shots and put in offensive boards--and we need some real guards--not just one, but a couple--dynamic ball-handlers with quickness and scoring talent. Sorry, Mr. Reliable JROB was not the kind of player that can take his team to a higher level. Our recruiting struggles lie squarely on the boss, and we will be waiting a long time for this thing to turn around unless he figures out a way to get some players into the program. As I have previously said, Kithcart and Manigault, assuming they pan out to be the heroes everyone is already penciling them in as, won't be enough.

Good post and many of the replies simply prove your point about the delusional fan base.

We've been a laughingstock in football for over 30 years for losing and churning football coaches. It's quite possible we will become just as laughable in basketball if Dixon leaves and we whiff on the next guy. Replacing a guy who has won multiple Coach of the Year awards and has always been listed among the winningest coaches and has gone to a tournament every year and to the NCAAT 85% of the time is not as easy as most of our fans think.

REALLY?

It seems to me the evidence suggests otherwise. Look at Pitt before Howland and you essentially have TCU today. Football school with little basketball accomplishment.

If Dixon gets TCU to the tourney say 3 out of the first 5 years....then TCU fans will rename the court after him.

But if Dixon stays 13 seasons at TCU and puts up the same results he had here (see: annual underachieving in March)....then TCU fans will do their absolute BEST Pitt fan imitation and want him gone.

Loyalty, my ass

To me, a delusional fan would be one who actually believes Dixon would leave Pitt for TCU because he feels under-appreciated by Pitt fans. There may be plenty of compelling reasons for him to leave Pitt, that isn't one of them.

It's about winning at every program, if it wasn't TCU wouldn't be looking to upgrade its coach. Likewise, it's about "what have you done for me lately" with every program's fan base. If anyone thinks the expectations of TCU and its fanbase would be satisfied by what Dixon has accomplished at Pitt the past 4 years, there are your delusional posters.

Lastly, once again, I really hope he he stays and works to get us back on track. He's a good coach. All he needs is some better players, and that is where he has really dropped the ball over the past 4 years.
