I’m not aware of any posts on this man on the Lair so excuse me if I am repeating others.
West was the only player in my lifetime to evade true description. I became an NBA fan when Unseld played with Jack Marin, when MacAdoo played in Buffalo and when the Pipers/Condors played in Pittsburgh.
West was an enigma, wrapped in a riddle inside a mystery (sorry Sir Winston). On the court he was at home as the floor, hoops and ball. When the NBA decided to use his image for their insignia I’m not so sure that edict didn’t come from Providence.
His persona was the same as trying to guard him. You just couldn’t do it.
To again paraphrase Winston Churchill, never in the game of basketball have so many owed so much to one person.
RIP.
