There's been a lot of talk about our bigs, Young and Artis and the new arrivals, but you don't win games with the players playing just two positions.

So... in Sheldon Jeter.... was pretty much invisible during the first part of the season, and Chris Jones got the starting nod at SF once Wright came back and... seemed to me like Jeter could just not get his shot to fall. But, then one game CJ got into foul trouble and Jeter got a lot more PT, and then got hot in the second half. So, Dixon moved Sheldon into the starting spot and he had some big games for us... including the put back against Cuse in the dome that sealed that W. But, down the stretch when a lot of players were run out of gas, Sheldon resembled that remark also... typically an 0-3 shooting night and nothing much more except a few rebounds.

Uh, it really seems to me that Jeter is one of those players that really gets better in a given game the more time he plays. This means he scores most of his points in the second half and down the stretch.

I like Jeter and hope he is the starter at SF again this year... and gets good minutes enough so he can get his game going. Yeah, be may spend much of the first part of the game not doing that much, but if he comes on late in the second half and down the stretch... that is MONEY time and plays made then often mean the difference between winning and losing.

So, again, as I see it, worth it to have Jeter starting even if he doesn't start coming on until the second half.

Oh, yeah, one thing. At times, his D was TERRIBLE. Not covering his man close enough on the perimeter to the point where they were nailing 3balls right over him. My thought, Dixon should play Jeter at PF on defense and Artis, at SF. In any case, Sheldon has got to get much better with his D.

As far as Chris Jones is concerned... I like CJ also. What impressed me the most about CJ, he would take a few shots early and they were not falling but he would keep at it and make up for it with hustle plays and the like... in other words working really hard on the floor.. and IMO this is a GREAT attitude. I still would like to see him come off the bench this year... but starter minutes off the bench spelling at both SF and SG... and try to get more consistent with his game. Yeah, I really like the idea of getting players to improve their consistency first rather than moving them into a starting spot. Come 2016, with Sterling Smith having graduated, then it is time to move CJ into the starting slot at SG. Remember that he was a later bloomer in HS and this could happen with his college career as well.

Any thoughts?

Jeter is another half and half guy. Half a PF, half a SF. He isn't a true power player. But, he also does not have the handle or quickness of a wing player. He seems like a guy who operates best offensively 15 feet and in, where he can either shoot a turnaround or take one or two dribbles and shoot. Offensively reminds a bit of Tyrell Biggs, a little less bulky and more mobile. And, yes, not a guy who is going to play strong defense - unless he works pretty darn hard at it, which is what he has to do to be more than a 6th-7th guy type.

Jones is a third guard/sf with a ceiling. An A10 kind of guy with limited athletic ability. Mike Cook without the tools to do the other things Mike Cook could do, but potentially a stronger outside shooter. And, never going to be any better than a serviceable defensive guy.

Jeter was 10 for 27 last year from 3ball land... 370% which is not a lot but a good percentage.

The thing about Jeter at SF, as compared to Jones, is he can get inside and rebound. IMO, a better rebounder than Artis (an inch taller and long arms), and that helps inside re having the somewhat undersized Young and Artis in there. He shot 475 from the field last year which is very good but just averaged 4.7 PPG in 14.3 MPG.

A lot of his scoring was when he got hot.

One good thing is he does not put up a lot of misses.

Dixon mentioned how hard Jeter was working, getting into the gym early and the like, and IMO that paid off. If he continues in that regard he should get better.

Jones was not on anybody's radar in HS but then blew up his senior year and was NJ State HS Basketball Player of the Year. Somewhat baby faced, he is a late maturer. As I mentioned in the OP, I see him as a hard worker on the court and that is a big plus. I would not underestimate how far he can go.

Both of these players SHOULD be better this coming season and we are gonna need it if we want to perform at the level we want.

You could maybe have a good, winning team with Jeter as a starter, but his liabilities defensively have to be compensated for, and his style is not a square fit for what JD does. JD likes players with more versatility, better ball handling and passing. Going to be hard to pair him with Artis, because they are both half and halves, you won't get great inside play and neither are going to do a lot of driving the basket. But, yeah, with work he can be a viable D1 starter.

Jones, you just can't be a good D1 program with him as a starter. Maybe as a 6th or 7th guy.

This isn't really a knock on them, just setting realistic expectations. It isn't their fault the team has other holes.

Which begs the question--why bring Jeter in as a transfer? At least when we brought Ziegler in, it was to address a need that he unfortunately wasn't able to fill. But when we added Jeter, we already had a stable full of tweener forwards.

IDK - given how the roster was already out of wack at that point, if he was really interested in coming back home to play, just not looking a gift horse in the mouth, taking a guy who was a legit D1 player ...
