Condolences to Gertrude and the entire Petersen family. A major loss for the University of Pittsburgh as well.

John, a former Pitt swimmer, 1951 business alumnus, and former chief of the Erie Insurance Group, along with his wife, have donated $10s of millions to Pitt athletics and academics. Obviously, the most recognized is the $10 million gift for the Petersen Events Center and an unknown amount for the Petersen Sports Complex, but they also endowed the Petersen Institute of Nanoscience and Engineering with a $5 million gift, $600K or more in endowed scholarships for baseball and swimming, and several more million for an endowed a chair for the dean of the school of medicine, along with who knows how many other gifts.
