Jurkovec Interview on the Fan Today

I think he is home. I think this is where he was always meant to play. I think he will do well. Of course, I thought Slovis would be a star here. So what do I know.

But seriously, this was all meant to be. Phil is going to have a big year. 10-2 for Pitt next year.

He is not very articulate nor does he seem insightful. Came across as archetypical football jock. Six years of college ( ND annd BC to boot) and that was the best he could speak? I am worried whether he can learn the playbook.

My thoughts as well! Can he quickly read a defense and make his progression reads accordingly? I have my doubts after listening to his responses.

I didn't want to say it but I was thinking the same thing. However, I doubt that matters much.

Honestly, could Pitt have done any better ? Having him and Veilleux is a win .

I'm not sold on Jurkovec at all, but he and Veilleux as a package is certainly sufficient. I imagine it'll be a lot better than the Slovis/Patti competition.

Need to find them some receiver help. We didn't do Slovis any favors there this past season.

One thing I found interesting is that he basically confirmed what we already knew. The Cignetti playbook is complex. The plays are long. The reads aren't easy. Not all college players can succeed in this system because of those things. Personally, I'd rather simplify it a bit at this level.

You're worried whether he can learn the playbook ...... Jurkovec has already proven that he can learn Cignetti's complex playbook very well and execute it better than Slovis did this season ..... Jurkovec has some deficiencies as a QB, but learning Cignetti's complex playbook is not one of them.

Exactly. He should really be coming in already knowing the playbook. Isn’t that the point of Pitt bringing him in? It’s also why I said they shouldn’t have a pretend competition. Unless another QB blows them away, commit to Jurkovec and allow him to develop timing and chemistry with the 1s all offseason. It’ll pay off Week 1.

I think he has a good deep ball but his short and intermediate throws leave a lot to be desired. Also, the injury history is a concern so QB2 has to be ready.

I think you are overrating the intelligence it takes to learn a playbook. You ever listen to most football coaches talk? Do Pat Narduzzi or Dabo Swinney sound like they were honors students? These are the geniuses that design the playbooks.

That's a reflex response. Lots of people said good riddance when Addison left and really didn't mean it.
Addison and Phil not even close in loss to a team. And Phil isn’t leaving BC for a multimillion dollar deal. He isn’t turning his back on a team that gave him everything to become the best wide receiver in college. Phil leaving isn’t a major loss to a terrible team like BC.

We shall see I disagree fully so we will see soon enough

We are his only power 5 guarantee to start and the PSU transfer was NEVER starting ever at PSU , he might turn out good let’s hope

Talked to my PSU buddies about him. Sounds like he is a high-character guy that they think has real talent. On top of that, his girlfriend is apparently legendary.

I give him a ton of credit given that he has to come in here and compete for a job, and he's willing to do it.

Is it really competing? I mean Phil is too connected to Cignetti to come here and sit the bench.

He could stand a little polish but I've heard much worse on the jock inarticulate scale.
With respect to the playbook, he will be fine. You can stop wringing your hands.
PJ is going to be better than Slovis.

There are a lot of people out there who are not articulate at all. I’m one of those people. I’m much better expressing my thoughts in writing than verbally.

I get nervous, tongue tied, and my mind goes blank. I especially have problems answering questions where I need to be less than honest.

For example: “Gee Mister Meister, is there going to be a layoff?” That was always a tough one to answer knowing full well there would be…
