I say we wait on Musselman and if we whiff then go after Nate Oats or Ryan Odom. Obviously Musselman would be the option 1 since he could bring back Pitt in a year or two with his expertise in the grad transfer market. But if not, I love Ryan Odom as 1A not only because he coached in the ACC he grew up in with his dad being a legend in the conference. He's young and there will be bumps along the way. But you could grow with him like we did with Jamie Dixon.I would be cool with Nate Oats too just not sure about his recruiting prowess. But he definitely can motivate young kids to play out of their minds.

I just think if Hurley holds out for another job we should focus our efforts on these other candidate. Especially since they probably are as good as a candidates who at least don't seem only motivated to come to Pitt because of more money.

Everything I've read from the MSM is that Musselman wants a west coast job and wouldn't want to come to Pitt. Similar to most saying Hurley wanted UConn.

I guess we'll see, but I don't think Musselman is an option. Again though, who knows, just reacting to what a lot of the national guys have been saying.

Sounds good. I am not sure how this all works but if Musselman is #2 on the list and Pitt goes through his agent, gets a true read on his interest and then aligns several candidates up it should go relatively quickly.

Why is frank Martin talked about for UConn but I've heard nothing about him and Pitt?

Big difference b/w Dixon inheriting a top 10-15 program and Odom inheriting a bottom 10-15 P6 program.

If they hire ME, you Homers will say what a great hire. Let's just hope we get a surprise , cause what's left is nothing to excite a fan base WILLARD especially

Musselman, Hurley, and Oats would provide excitement. Then maybe there is someone out there that hasn’t been mentioned. Time will tell.

How many of you on here, who keep hoping for Musselmen, Oats & Odom even knew their names and where they coached just 2 months ago? Could be dangerous to hire a Coach, who had a Team get hot or had a major upset in the Tournament in the same year our own school needs to hire a Coach(although, certainly does not mean any of these Coaches might not be a Great Hire if given Time to rebuild this Program that has hit rock bottom, but just would be cautious on names that no ACC Program would have considered hiring 4 months ago).

A Great Recruiter will be vital skill needed in the next Coach hired by PITT, as like I always say also for Football, a Great Coach is important, but it is the Jimmys and Joes that is still more vital than the Xs & Os(look at how good Milkdud recruits to Creepy Valley, as do you think his Team would not have lost another 5-6 Games the past 2 years without having Barkley as their RB? And Milkdud now has a Top 5 Recruiting Class to add to a boatload of other 4 Star Players already on his Team).

That being said, if Hurley does not accept the PITT Job, I like Earl Grant, as he was an Assistant under Gregg Marshall at Wichita State, who I think is a Top 10 Coach, who I wanted PITT to try and get 2 years ago until realizing he has it good at Wichita State(including a Private Plane for Recruiting and Sell Out Home Crowds), and at this point would only leave for a Top 6-7 Program.

Back to Grant, I liked what I heard of an interview with him on what he learned as an Assistant Coach under Marshall, and how he would identify Players to recruit. He also has a background in the ACC(I assume prior to going to be an Assistant Coach at Wichita State). How do we know that Grant(or even other potential Coaches in the Rumors for consideration will not be better than Dan Hurley over the next 10 years.

Actually, 2 years ago, I wanted PITT to go after Bobby Hurley, and not sure how much he is being paid now, or if he would like to get back to the East Coast, but why not reach out to him again? Although, he just signed a contract extension with Arizona State, which might include an expensive Buyout on his updated contract, and with PITT needing to pay Hackett-errr. I mean Stallings(sorry mixed up Program Destroying Coaches at PITT), doubt they will have money to also pay any Coach with a big Buyout to leave a current school he is at this year.

My guess is that Hurley's Agent leaked the PITT 3 Million per year offer to get UCONN to increase their offer as by accounts I have read, he seems to prefer the UCONN job(or his Wife prefers to live in that area and keep their kids in school there-not sure how close their kids RI School is to UCONN).

If Hurley ends up taking the PITT job mainly for the money, it will just be a sign that if he wins at PITT and turns the program around and get to a few Elite 8s & Final 4s, that other Schools who can pay more money or are one of the Top Tier Programs(which UCONN really is, except their Conference affiliation might undo that Status, although there are a few other Great Basketball Programs from Non Power 5 Conferences like Gonzaga, Villanova, Butler, Wichita State, etc. so UCONN certainly with even more recent Success, can still, with the right Coach, be one of those Basketball Programs) will go after Hurley and he will listen to them, unless he and his family loves Pittsburgh and he likes working for the current AD or any future potential AD(this is PITT, and we never seem to have stability in the AD Position), and would like to stay for the long term.

Are you new to the board? I brought Musselman up awhile ago.

Cmon man, Musselman was a head coach for 2 different NBA teams and his dad was a long time NBA coach. Anyone who follows basketball knows who he is.

Yep, Musselman and Oats were being discussed well before Stallings was even fired. They were both on the short list. And Hurley was atop that short list. Miller wasn't even a postscript.

Nope not new, as been here for 2 years and occasionally read it for the past 5-6 years but do not post often as I have a life, and just check in once in awhile(mostly on the Football Board, since Basketball Team was not even worth watching under Stallings and even the final Dixon years where watching his Offense of Bleed the Shot Clock and force up a bad shot when no other options, was like getting a Root Canal. Do concur that Musselmen should be more well known, but I did not follow Pro Career, and that does not indicate if he would be a good Coach. My point was more general to all Colleges seeking a Coach in past years, and a few Coaches, who have some quick success in the Tournament even if just for one season, all of the sudden are 'Hot Candidates'. I even brought up my own such Coach I liked, but it was due to his prior experience and learning as an Assistant under Gregg Marshall.

Virtually any coach that accepts the Pitt job would be in jeopardy of getting poached by a bigger school, not just Hurley. Coach K is 71, Roy Williams is 67, Tom Izzo is 63, Calipari is 59, Boeheim is 73, Beilein is 65, etc. They're not going to coach forever. If a coach came to Pitt and took us to a few Elite 8s and/or Final 4s, he'd be getting attention from all of the blue bloods. Unless someone has a connection to the city and/or school, we have to face the reality that this is, at least for the foreseeable future, a stepping stone job. That's okay, though. Wouldn't you rather the program return to the best of the Dixon/Howland years or even progress beyond them? At that point, who cares if we lose our coach? We'd be infinitely more appealing to potential replacements. I'd love to have our own version of Coach K or Mark Few, but those guys are nearly as rare as a sasquatch. I'll take a good coach with ambition who can get us on the right track and worry about him leaving later.
