I think the problem with the O rebounds was they were big to start with and, out working us... at least at the start. In the second half each team had 3 OR and that is all. So, Dixon put some emphasis on it and that changed things around.

But, in the second half, there was the T on their coach and then the flagrant foul and that meant 4 points and at least one possession. If those things hadn't happened the game would have been a lot closer. Almost ANY team can start shooting lights out and knock off a much higher ranked team. But, the thing I saw is our guys were not playing all that close on the perimeter and they were shooting 3 balls right over our guys. Don't know if this is gonna change or not. There were also a few defensive breakdowns and the team has got to limit those for sure.

Robinson played 36 minutes and Young and Artis 34 each... and the trio scored 60 of our 85 points. Smith contributed as did Luther, albeit there are always the ragged plays with Luther that don't necessarily show in the box score... but otherwise our bench was almost non-existent. Jones had a bad shooting night, and Jeter only played 6 minutes and Slim 7. Not sure what is gonna happen on this.

At least against this team, Young seemed more comfortable out there when there was a C out there with him... and the idea of playing Young at C to get Jeter more time.... may go by the wayside. Also, Jeter is the smallest of the 'bigs' and maybe Dixon wanted more size out there. Maybe Dixon should consider playing Jeter more at SF again (as well as at PF), which is where he played last year. Would help out with the rebounding more than Slim.

Maia did not look bad defensively out there.... got a bigger bod which is harder to post up on. Would like to see him get more minutes. Might be too late to get in much better shape.

Robinson, Young and Artis were shooting lights out. We may need that and more to take down Purdue.

Young does look a lot more comfortable playing the 4.

Honestly, I haven't seen Young being used much differently this year compared to last.

He's been great offensively, but I'm slightly disappointed in his board work. Artis was Pitt's best defensive rebounder last year, so Young needed to improve and so far he's been underwhelming.

The only difference I can see is how they run sets to get him the ball at the elbow -- this happened much less frequently last year.

You're probably right on that. I was looking more at how much they allowed him to face up and play away from the basket. I haven't paid attention to where he's getting it as much as how he's getting it, you're likely much more in tune to that.

I wouldn't mind Artis operating out of that elbow spot again against zones. Mike has a solid midrange jumper but Jamel seems to thrive in that area.

Zara, this time I totally agree with everything in your post. The main point being, as you said.....Young
Is more "comfortable" with a big guy at Center next to him. Young is so good that, yes...he can play
Center if he has to, but as is obvious, he has a great floor game and is a legitimate PF. Of course it
Goes without saying, Artis is just as valuable at SF as he was at PF last year. The real point is, the two
Of them make a great forward tandem, and they both can work inside and on the perimeter. In Jamie's
movement offense this is possible.
Now, with all that said, the Center position is anything but solidified at this point. Ano, or whatever his
name is, so far is a non factor. Luther, has looked decent against smaller front lines, but will do very
little against REAL big men in the ACC....IMO. Maia, at least takes up space, is tough, and can rebound.
We need him to greatly improve on defense, stay out of foul trouble and rebound for us. The Kent State
interior killed us on the boards. Their center would start for us and be an upgrade. They would have beaten
last year's Pitt team, and probably would have fouled out Young in the process. No way last year"'s panthers
shoot like what we saw yesterday.
I'm looking forward to the Purdue game. IMO we can beat them IF we can hang with them inside. This game should give us an idea of what we can do against the ACC's elite teams. I'm not even going to mention our
D, or should I say "lack of D." That is a whole other problem, and a big one at that.

Is this written in iambic pentameter?

Gee wiz DT... a moderator now!

What happened to Peak? ... or are you 'another' moderator?

Guess you get the unenviable job of deleting posts by 'Our man Phil' as well as the one and only... 'Goldie'.

Otherwise... have a nice day and... congratulations!

MrGee....LOL I wish I knew why this happens. It looks ok when I write it, but somehow it ends up like this.
Any advice?
Not sure--if it looks different than the way it comes out, that would be strange---maybe check the "alignment"

I used to scoff at Dixon when he talked about defense and rebounding. Now, when he stresses it at every turn, it's music to my ears because it's been so bad the last few years. Yet, with all of this emphasis, this team does not come out ready from the start to defend and rebound against Kent St?

I find this very troubling.
