Keys to the game

Before the game I stated that there were two major keys to the game:

1. Pressure on Kaaya. We got zero pressure all game (and we blitzed a lot). Terrible performance by the D line.

2. Turnovers. We lost the turnover battle and did it in absolutely critical situations...game over.

A few more thoughts on the game itself.

1. DB's - once again, they stunk. Made zero plays. Hamlin got smoked, but so did the other DB's. Keep putting these guys on an island Pat. It's working pretty well.

2. Running game was not effective. First game of the year that our running game was really irrelevant. Of course, the fact that we were down so much didn't help, but we weren't effective in the run game even when the game was still close. BTW - defenses have completely figured out how to stop the jet sweep. Hasn't worked for weeks.

3. O line had their worst game of the year. Peterman was constantly under pressure. Run blocking was not up to snuff either. Miami Dline outplayed us badly.

4. Our WR's are incredibly pedestrian. Besides Weah, we have no deep threats at all.

5. Henderson. Live by the sword die by the sword. The guy is clearly one of our best playmakers but he's also becoming a fumble machine. He puts up 7 with a big return, but then gives it right back with a bad fumble in the red zone.

6. Coaching. Poor to horrible today. Fake punt in the first half was comical. Gave Miami great field position and the play had absolutely zero chance of working. Punting with 2 minutes left down by 16 on 4th down and 5? Just plain stupid.

7. Peterman decision making was bad. The obvious horrible decision on the pick in the end zone really killed any chance we had of winning. Worse yet, he had Conner right in front of him for a 2-3 yard gain, but throws it right into Miami's hands. He also missed a bunch of key throws. Takes an absolutely absurd sack on third down in the red zone...pushing the FG attempt back by 12 yards (and of course, Blewitt misses). That also killed momentum. Peterman needed to play a great game and we got average to below average.

8. I do have one positive note. I thought Narduzzi won the wet tee shirt contest vs Richt.

Glad someone besides me saw throwing to Conner for a 2-3 yd gain was the obvious choice there...or hell fall down ... still alive to try and probably miss a FG... that play killed the game

Weah dropping that ball down the seam was another ball breaker. At the risk of stating the obvious Pitt needs to make every play available to them.

Miami's lines have had trouble this year. Pitt's has had a tough couple weeks.

Outside of the mistakes, this game was very competitive until late in the fourth. However, Pitt is a team that cannot afford to make mistakes and expect to win.
The ifs
Weah makes the catch late in the 2nd qtr, Pitt scores and goes up 28-27 at the half!
Henderson does not fumble and give Miami a short field TD!
Peterson does not thow endzone INT, PItt makes a TD.
Next drive, Peterson doesn't take bad sack, Pitt FG !
The defense made some stops in the 3rd Qtr, Pitt could have been up 38-27 at this point.

I am not saying that they still would have won, but they are not that far away either.

Besides 2 plays in the endzone....which he actually had good coverage on the 1st and just lost inside position on the 2nd....where else did he get smoked? Serious question, because I must have missed those plays.

No I agree with you. I thought the second TD given up was bad, but overall pretty encouraging compared to what we've been seeing.

Besides the ending, how did you like the play Mrs Lincoln?

I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean.

I thought the defense has been horrible all year...as expected. I would have burned a ton of redshirts around game 4/5. Camp, Pugh, Garner, Miller and Coleman would all have at least half a season under their belt going into next year. Brightwell would have passed Caprara, Wirginis over Galambos, and Watts would be rotated in more.

The deep pass along the left sideline - he was 2 steps behind. Wouldn't say he was smoked... but it was just another Lewis/Maddox type coverage.

Even if the dbs are in position they have no idea where the ball is . I was at the game , a lot of overthrows to open receivers . Miami stopped themselves with drops or overthrows very little push up front .

I agree and yet it really sucks to have all of this go against you in a single game... which is why the punt didn't bother me as much ....it was over by then the chance to really be a threat and gain momentum was looonnnggg gone

Everything that Pitt couldn't afford to do today they did: turnovers, not cashing in with TDs in the red zone, falling behind early (forcing them to throw), 3rd and longs, poor kicking/punting game, penalties. They were lucky to even be in the game in the 2nd half. I'm not sure what you guys think, but that was their worst all around performance of the year by far.

Can somebody please tell him to stop deferring after winning the coin toss? Putting your team in an immediate 7-0 hole is not a good strategy.

The biggest key to this game was the enormous discrepancy in talent that exists between these two programs. Pitt is 2-17 versus Miami since Dorsett played, and this has been the major reason why.

Lots of good points in this thread, but I thought an over riding factor today was Pitt's ATROCIOUS TACKLING . We gave Miami a ton of extra yards today...

Go Pitt.

You know why, our last administration was derelict and made the program a bottom feeder. In all reality , Pitt could be a very good job, at one time it was.
We will have a hard time competing without a monetary commitment. The admin has to go all in or we will be Purdue, Wake Forest, or Arizona. The last good coach was Gottfried, and the admin f ed that up.

At this point in the season we are realisticly looking at a 7-5 season. Yes, I am dissapointed but as everyone seems to realize that the talent on the defense just is not there. You have to give HCPN 4 years to establish his program and there will be growing pains along the way. It PItt looks like this in 2 years then I will be concerned but until then I will remain patient.

I hate to burst your bubble Farnox, but 7-5 is absolutely no certainty. We will get killed by Clemson and Duke and Syracuse are not going to be easy W's for this team. 6-6 is very possible. So is 5-7.

I can't deny it. Duke an Syracuse are not going to be gimmies.
