Unlistenable, awful ,dreadful. Dunlap,Mack, Cook and Starkey just awful. I know this is not an NBA town and most yinzers are clueless re: the NBA but the coverage has been so bad. They know so little about the NBA. An embarrassment. Hell Stan Savran at least has a working knowledge of the NBA. these clowns are useless.

I mean, what did you expect? It's miracle that folks listen to that outside of when Peak is on, Capel's show or Narduzzi's show or they're broadcasting a Pitt football or basketball game.

Most folks I know stopped listening to Fan stuff 5 or 6 years ago. It's the kind of baiting, non informative programming that reduces listeners to less than what they are...

not sure what happened in the terrestrial radio industry but i don't see this market having access to national shows. It wasn't that long ago, ok well 20 years so maybe it was, that we had national syndication shows like Kornheiser, Jim Rome, and even Ferrell on the bench. (pardon any spelling errors)..

Espn 1250 and 970 are gone of course but still nothing as far as national shows that im aware of anyways.. so for those times when you want to get away from local steeler/pens talk you could get the national perspective on things. Does that still exist? Outside of XM/Sirius radio of course.. Or are those days gone and you got to pay for it now?

Honestly... why would they need NBA knowledge? It’s not like their listeners are dying for hard core NBA talk.
Yeah lklets get back to mor

a guy who does sports talk for a living in the USA should be well versed in the NBA not just discussing the merits of Hines Ward to the HOF. again and again and again.

Right now at this time this has little to do with the NBA or NBA talk.

It has everything to do with a helicopter crash, a man and his daughter, friends, who were just killed in a helicopter crash and his family.

Everyone or anything else is irrelevant right now.

This will change as time passes.

Any talk show host should be able to address that.

The NBA thing is another discussion!
If their talking NBA they're on the wrong page.

I don't think there is any real sports coverage in Pittsburgh on the terrestrial segment any longer. All you hear is Stillers, Stillers, Pens, maybe some Pirates, Stillers, and if it's Junker, you always have to hear about the cultists and child rape U. If I want any sports news, I just turn to Sirius/XM. And ESPNU on Sirius/XM is pretty decent most of the time if you want college sports.

Agreed - the majority of people in the Pittsburgh media are clueless.

I am unsure what else the hosts of the show 93.7 the fan should be saying right now.

Cook comes right out says he is NOT an NBA guy. So be it. He is not going to become so sage over night regarding this topic. There is some bias in the sports that journalists may choose and follow---it is human nature.

NBA basketball is just not a big draw in Pittsburgh sports talk markets. It never has been.

JORDAN was that dude but Kobe was my man on my Lakers and was that Jordan 2.0 in a lot of ways especially the mentality. My heart and prayers go out to his family and other families that were lost it's just a horrible tragedy

This. If you listen to some similar markets, they are lacking too. But Pgh near the bottom talent wise in talk and especially writing. Its mostly bait and bias blog blah.

The Kornheizer show on radio from DC. It was on from 10 to noon. If I was driving that way for work I would time it so around 10am I was at Fredrick. I loved listening to him with great topics and guests.

the on air personalities on the fan suck. They really do

Cook is lazy and doesn’t prepare. Starkey comes up with some really lame topics to spur on conversation. They brought Pompeani in for Monday’s and Tuesday’s during Steelers season to boost ratings. He still comes in to help boost ratings. They suck

The poni mueller show is garbage.

tbh I'm not too sure how any "sports" fan ignores the NBA. If you do, then you probably have something stupid against it like "they don't play defense". It's easily the most entertaining major sport right now and is filled with some of the greats. It's never been this deep from top to bottom. Those who aren't following are really missing out.

honestly they are all trash. I don't mean to dis on anyone in a professional manner because it's their life's work, but they are all terrible.

I know people don't like Mark Madden, mainly because of his shtick and he really only cares for the Pens, but he's by far the most knowledgeable sports guy in town. That's not saying much, but it's true. The lack of NBA knowledge from all of them is astonishing. I know it's not an NBA town, but my goodness I doubt any of them could name 10 active players.

Mark Madden’s knowledge revolves around hockey, professional wrasslin’, food, and porn. I would not consider that a well rounded sports guy.

absolutely the NBA is the best its ever been. and in my opinion has the best athletes in the world for any team sport. the best. My fandom goes back to the days of kobe's dad in the NBA.

while those are part of what he knows, he also knows soccer and football very well. He's not bad with baseball. It's just the way he reports it makes it seem like he's trolling because he makes yinzers mad. However, if you read it from a clear lens, he's usually right.

I didn't get to see much of MJ. In my mid 20s - grew up with Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, KG Iverson, Nash, etc. Then came the LBJ class. I've seen some awesome teams/talent so far. I wish I could've seen Jordan. I'm just held to the Youtube clips and stories. I will say I'm biased towards LBJ because of that. I just didn't get the "eye" test with MJ like I do with Lebron.

The 3 most popular sports in the USA are football, basketball, and baseball. 2 of the 3 he is clueless on, and the third is debatable. I do not listen to him, and have no reason to do so. There are far more knowledgeable people out there.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Please don't turn this into something it's not - I said out of PGH media outlets, he's the most knowledgeable and that's not saying much.

Bob Pompeani Not Pleased!!

It's true, I grew up loving basketball, but we never had a pro team. Condors, but they folded when I was young and where never on TV anyways. We never had an NBA team. I adopted the Chicago Bulls around 1974 as my NBA team, great choice, but after they collapsed after Jordan left, I've just totally lost interest 99.5%, I still like basketball, but stick with college, especially Pitt. I know I'm a Yinzer , I need a team named PITTSBURGH to be all in, so after the Bulls dynasty and being a Bulls fan from around 1974-1998 I've lost all interest in the NBA, I may have watched a handful of Kobe's games ever.

If any of these morons knew anything, they wouldn't be sports jocks. That goes for the nationals and locals alike. That's why when you meet them, they are always miserable. They all know what they are. I don't even know how anyone can think sports talk radio/TV is entertaining? What meaningful info were you expecting from them regarding a helicopter crash?

Unless he's learned a whole heck of a lot over the last few years that's just wrong. He always knew just enough soccer to fool people who didn't pay any attention to soccer into thinking he knew what he was talking about, and he knew no more about football that whatever his most recent guest on the show told him.

I don't think that's much the case at all. I liked the NBA growing up but don't watch much of it now given its not in our market and I can't watch everything. The season is too long to get invested much before March, though I'll enjoy a game when it's on.

I'll still watch the NBA over the Pirates though.

Ooh. Ooh. Can I be Steigy? " I don't care about dunking a ball. I'll watch when they fix it. Blah. Blah."

He does not know football very well. At all
