To piggy back on the earlier post regarding recruitment of Hudson and Pugh (both of whom could project as LB's) I wanted to call some attention to the depth of this position moving forward.
Currently on scholarship we have:
Major contributors
Bam Bradley - RS Junior (1 season remaining)
Mike Caprara - RS Junior (1 season remaining)
Matt Galambos - Junior (1 Season remaining)
Nicholas Grigsby - RS Senior (0 eligibility remaining)
Back up depth
Jamal Davis - RS Freshman (3 seasons remaining)
Quinton Wirginis - Soph (2 seasons remaining)
Saleem Brightwell - Freshman (3 seasons unless he gets a RS)
Anthony McKee - Freshman (3 seasons unless he gets a RS)
Jameel Poteat - RS SR (0 eligibility remaining)
Walk On's
Brian Popp - RS Freshman
Nico Lodovico - RS Freshman
Jim Medure - Freshman
Dom Cuono - RS Freshman
Inbound Recruits
Chase Pine - Looks like a great athlete. Very excited about this verbal.
Based on this outlook, Pitt really needs (1 or 2) more scholarship LB's in this class which could be Hudson or Pugh. For the record, I have no knowledge of the (4) walk on's capabilities so I'm reserving comment on their use.
Pitt went 0 for 5 with MLB offers (so far) in the 2016 class which drives the stakes up to sign David Adams, Dylan Rivers, Blake Gallagher or another 2017 MLB offer that will come and leaves that spot a little thin unless they push Davis into the middle. McKee and Brightwell seem awfully light to be run stoppers.
This isn't meant to be a "sky is falling" post or to over emphasize the recruitment of any kid in particular. I haven't sweated the Pugh/Hudson scenario much figuring we'd get 50% of the equation and to me they look like future LB's. I'm certain the staff recognizes it, I just think this is an interesting position to follow given the matriculation that's about to occur this year and next.
