The only constant in pitt's decline from national prominence in the late 70s and early 80s is the inept members of the board of trustees..these are the people who are technically in charge of the university, including the right to control, hire and fire chancellors... you can count one 1 or 2 fingers the number who have challenged any of our disastrous athletic policies since that time, including the catastrophic decision to give up control of the site of your football program by moving to Three Rivers/Heinz field, the funding of our major sports, including salaries and recruiting expenses, conference affiliations(including accepting Penn State's orchestration the blocking of our admission to the big 10)_all this time they act like concerned buffoons, attending receptions , flying on team charters to away games, with all expenses paid--all the time committing our teams to playing at the highest levels without the resources necessary to compete.... some of this came to light when a few(very few)challenged the adminstration on details of the stadium move and operation, and asked for independent information on competitive program coaches salaries..... it was all pushed aside...wake up pitt students, alums and fans....we can't win unless people in charge actually want to win... period. Nobody wants to rock the boat for fear it might affect them personally and professionally......Penn state couldn't do a better job of neutralizing their one time rival than if they actually controlled our board

Totally agree! Post of the Year!

Why do people stand by and watch it happen?

Why do people stand by and watch it happen?

The real problem lying underneath the surface of all our troubles with Pitt football, is that the rationality of Pitt's leaders has always been different than ours ... and obviously still is.

They don't really care about football, all they seem to care about is research ... and propagating themselves and their departments ... They realize they have a good thing going with their "cushy" jobs and outlandish benefits packages. All they want to do with football is make it look like they care so that alums will contribute and more seats will be sold at Heinz.

The only way to get them to change is to intensify our efforts against them. Stop giving "fools" more money to continue with their foolish ways, and tired arguments and excuses.

The only winning strategy for playing the cards they dealt us is not to play their game!

PSU's board is extremely corrupt and is tightly controlled. The alumni members are tokens that are powerless. They are all in place up there only to enrich themselves and their cronies. Pitt's board is likely no different, but that is because the state has very little control over these universities. They are actually controlled by these powerful and rich factions that maintain this control because of the lucrative rewards.

What a joke. Pitt has 8 people on its Leadership Team to the Chancellor. 2 of them are Nitters. Just looked it up to verify.

Only at Pitt would you let the wolves guard the hen house.

Man, there have been a lot of deranged posts on this board, but these two may take the cake. What a paranoiac; I'll never mock SMF again.

I would say ours is as well

Our geographically closest competitors i.e WVU, PSU have a history of wanting to win and will do what is necessary to achieve success. On the other-hand, PITT has had a history of incompetence.

Their donations and fan support also ensures that will happen. Even during the bad times.

Pitt fans jump ship at the first sign of struggle. See last season basketball after almost a decade and a half of success.

First sign of struggle?? Just recently???

You better duck, my friend.

It was more of a statement of fact, then anything else.

The first part is a fact. How is that paranoid?

Because it's not a 'joke', and referring to it as 'wolves guarding the hen house' is beyond ridiculous. There's nothing stopping a PSU alumnus from being a loyal, competent employee or leader at Pitt, and suggesting otherwise is beyond juvenile. Grow up.

So there are no worthwhile candidates with a Pitt degree, but they managed to find 2 with a PS degree. That is 25% of the leadership team.

What we need is a complete disclosure of a time line on disastrous decisions(too many to list here)and a disclosure of the members of the board and how they voted(surprise they are all going to be unanimous!). And , we need an advocate who makes available the comparative data by conference on revenue and key expenditures(coaches salaries, recruiting, etc) and revenue..stadium deal key elements, anlaysis of who plays "off campus" and the relative game day and fan pertinent information and metrics, severance payments(pedersen, etc,). Tracking of tenure of trustees still on the board is also relevant, as well as conflicts of interest...This will not present a pretty picture on the one hand(historical)but; if things are really "changing for the better," a graphic data analysis will show it... the dirty little secret is the degree to which many current trustees have been "going along" with disastrous decisions and uncompetitive support for athletics, while sending our players out to "play" and our sturdents, fans, and alums to watch.......

0/8 Pitt alums on the Chancellor's cabinet. Do you think Penn State has 0 PSU alums on their leadership team? Try not to take immediate offense when someone points out a strange fact.
