Agreed. Pretty cruel (and yes the same would be true to mock a Russian playing by chanting Ukraine.) It's an active deadly conflict, a bit "too soon" as they say.

btw, and speaking of geography, I spent the first 57 years of my life pronouncing the capitol of Ukraine as "Key-ev". I'm not changing to "Keev" now damn it.

They knew their geography just fine. Which makes the chant that much more obscene and disgusting. No "sorrys" make up for anything when you're that stupid and ignorant.
Me too and I didn't understand this. Key-ev is the Russian pronounciation and Kiev is the Russian spelling. Keev is the Ukrainian pronounciation and Kyiv is the Ukrainian spelling.
You guys missed the real glory days of early Big East Pitt at the Field House. The giant check held up for Doug West at Nova, along with car keys wringing (well you actually had metal keys then not a FOB) "take away his car". The nasty "Peking Man" chanted at Patrick Ewing.
I forget who wrote it there was a whole book written on college BB crowd antics in the 80's. It was great. And now, very politically uncorrect.
As a nation, we need to get a sense of humor back.

was at the cuse / Pitt game at civic arena with my older brother in 1986 where the whole damn arena, not just the student section, but the whole arena was chanting "KIdnapped Kidnapped" every time Seikaly touched the ball.
Followed by "We got your uncle....we got your uncle...." all due to Seikaly's uncle being kidnapped in war in beirut..
yeah, i was 9 so i was too young to really know the story but i was chanting it and my older brother was just looking at me lol.
but in hindsight, yeah, that was a bit over the line IMO.
