First off, great effort by our Panthers.
Offensively, if you can't get the running game going, you are in trouble. The OL and tight ends just didn't control the line of scrimmage OR move anyone at all. I saw alot of whiffs by the TE's.
Play calling was very good. We exposed the PSU secondary by isolating particular players in different scenerio's. Pickett played very well, used the entire pocket to move and get extra time. Read the defense well. Sure he missed a few guys but they also had a few drops. FFrench's drop in the 4th was huge.
1 and 10 at the 1. Put the QB under center with a full back or lineman behind the QB and push him in the endzone. At least try one quick running play. YES Narduzzi made the fatal mistake by not going for the TD.
Defensively, secondary was excellent! Clifford was not on target long and I think the reason is that he was beat up quite a bit. DL played well, only one long drive by PSU. Linebackers had some miscues and missed tackles. Dane Jackson actually had a couple of missed tackles in the first half.
Punting was excellent...Kick off coverage was very good as well. good improvements over the first couple of games.
UCF will be a much more difficult match-up for us than PSU.
Grades:
OL = c+: Carter Warren and Morrisey did a really nice job. Rest of the line is a work in progress and improved since UVA
TE = D: Blocking is an issue. many whiffs
QB = A-: Pickett definitely has made major strides and you can see the Whipple influence.
RB = C: not much opportunity
WR = B-: Some clutch catches but still many drops.
Defense:
DL = B+ played well throughout, got winded on one drive. Lots of pressure in the first half
LB = B- some missed tackles and slips caused a few big plays
CB = A
S's = A
Punter was excellent, kicker, gotta be more consistent.
Coaching = B+. Very good game plans on both sides of the both, very good play calling at times but the goal line (1 yard) decision will haunt us.
