There is nothing flashy about Ryan Luther’s game. He’s not going to wow a crowd with a high-flying dunk or a barrage of threes. And though he’s a frontcourt player, he does not have the most polished back to the basket game.
Yet, Luther was a key piece for Pitt last season. Down the late stretch of the season, he swung a number of games in the Panthers’ favor. There was his 10-point performance against Duke and his 13 points in Pitt’s second game against Syracuse. And though Pitt lost, his 17 points in the Panthers’ second game versus Louisville kept his team in the game.
His knack for finding soft spots against defenses inside and out was uncanny, as he often put himself in good positions to score. That knack seemed to work well within Jamie Dixon’s system. Luther believes he can be an important contributor in new head coach Kevin Stallings’ system, too.
“I still need to get used to the new staff and everything, but I think it’s coming along well so far,” Luther said. “By the time the season comes in a couple months we should be pretty solid.”
